From land to sea: multi-scale and multi-resolution analysis of active deformation and seismogenic sources around the coasts of Southern Italy

2016

During the last decade, we have blended our individual skills to form a research group devoted to investigating active crustal deformation in areas adjacent to the coast of Southern Italy, with the aim to bridge the gap between the onshore and offshore realms. Our research is based on a multi-scale and multi-resolution approach that includes high-resolution seismics, coastal morpho-tectonics and structural geology, complemented by seismicity, Global Positioning System and InSAR. Need and opportunities of such an endeavor arise from the basic observation that, although most population centers lie close to the coastal areas, very little is known about active structures at the sea. However, hi…

A comparative study on the dynamic response of three semisubmersible floating offshore wind turbines

2019

Abstract Currently, there is a great interest to globally develop offshore wind energy due to the greenhouse effect and energy crisis. Great efforts have been devoted to develop reliable floating offshore wind energy technology to exploit the wind energy resources in deep seas. This paper presents a comparative study of the dynamic response of three different semisubmersible floating wind turbine structures. All the three platforms support the same 5MW wind turbine. The platforms examined are: a V-shaped Semi, an OC4-DeepCwind Semi and a Braceless Semi at 200 m water depth. A dynamic analysis is carried out in order to calculate and compare the performance of these platforms. The comparison…

This study focuses on the social acceptability of oil and gas platforms circular decommissioning and its potential for tourism development purposes, especially in Italy. It shows how: 1) the public acknowledges potential for …

Plio-Pleistocene geological evolution of the northern Sicily continental margin (southern Tyrrhenian Sea): new insights from high-resolution, multi-e…

2003

High-resolution seismic profiles were acquired in the north Sicily offshore region with an innovative, multi-tip sparker array which lacks ringing and has a base frequency around 600 Hz. The new data, combined with published data, suggest that intra-slope and extensional basins formed as a consequence of the late Miocene (?)–early Pliocene shortening and thrusting, and the middle (?)–late Pliocene continental rifting affecting the internal side of the Sicilian-Maghrebian chain. Early (?) Pleistocene to Holocene high-amplitude and high-frequency sea-level changes resulted in repeated sub-aerial exposure and flooding of the shelf, and the deposition of cyclically arranged hemipelagic and shel…

Contaminated sediments from dredging activities as modern turbidites: geochemical signatures in box-core sediments from the Augusta area, Ionian Sea,…

2009

The Augusta area (SE Sicily) is one of the most industrialized and contaminated coastal environments in the Mediterranean region, having a relatively high influx of unregulated industrial effluents. Valuable sets of geochemical data (major elements and trace metals), obtained from box-core sediments collected along a transect from the Sicilian coastal zone seawards of Augusta and dated via 210Pb and 137Cs, indicated increased metal contamination (notably Hg) since ca 1940-1950, related to the industrial development of the area. Metal enrichment is considerable in the coastal sediments, being significantly in excess (for Hg and Pb) of background values estimated for the Strait of Sicily. Mor…

Toward farm-level health management of wind turbine systems: status and scope for improvements

2018

An outline of health management for OWFs has been detailed in this chapter with description of various important elements. The need for such farm level management is explained and benefits are discussed. Key gaps to be filled in order to realize such a system are identified. The proposed health management system is mainly based on the existing knowledge of fleet-level management in the aerospace sector. Health management is much broader than CM; there are a number of aspects beyond the prognostics capabilities that are to be designed in order to arrive at a comprehensive maintenance management scheme. A comprehensive maintenance program that is sensitive to the health of the assets and adap…

HIGH-RESOLUTION SEISMIC SURVEY IN THE WESTERN CALABRIA AND EASTERN SICILY OFFSHORE: IMPLICATIONS WITH VERTICAL TECTONICS

2016

High-resolution seismic data acquired along the continental shelf/upper slope offshore of Capo Vaticano (western Calabria), Milazzo Promontory and Mt. Etna (eastern Sicily) allow to provide new insights on vertical mobility related to active tectonics. A number of depositional sequences bounded by unconformities or correlative para-conformities were recognized on Sparker profiles in the first 200-300 m below the sea-floor. The most recent sequence overlays a widespread erosional surface that ostensibly formed during the sea level stillstand of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), whereas a stack of depositional sequences, which are interpreted as representing the falling and low-stand systems tr…
