Sustainable Entrepreneurial Orientation: A Business Strategic Approach for Sustainable Development
2017
This paper proposes sustainable entrepreneurial orientation (SEO) as a multidimensional construct that offers researchers the possibility of empirically testing their theoretical proposals in the sustainable entrepreneurship field. The authors propose an integration of different theories. In accordance with the dynamic capabilities view, SEO is approached under an organizational paradigm of strategic orientations delimited by competitive culture and multiple orientation perspectives. Furthermore, SEO's nature is conceived at a firm-based entrepreneurship level and is based on an integrated triple bottom line sustainability. This approach is conceptualized using a categorization scheme and d…
Innovativeness and Family-Firm Performance: The Moderating Effect of Family Commitment
2016
The positive relationship between innovativeness and firm performance is well established and applies equally to all businesses, including family firms. However, little is yet known about how the unique characteristics of family firms influence this relationship. Drawing upon the resource-based view (RBV) of the firm, this study explains how the interplay between innovativeness as a firm-specific resource and family commitment as a family-specific resource affects performance. The analysis of longitudinal survey data collected from Finnish family firms demonstrates a curvilinear (U-shaped) moderating effect of the owner family’s commitment to the firm, in that the impact of innovativeness o…
Entrepreneurial Marketing in Small Firms: A Comparative Study of Small Software Technology Firms in Central Finland, Wales, UK and Silicon Valley, US
2014
This paper reports on present research of Entrepreneurial Marketing (EM) in small software technology firms (SSTFs) in order to investigate and compare the effects of ecosystems in three different countries and, the effect this has on a firm’s EM orientation and, on business growth. Firms today operate in a business environment characterized by increased risk and decreased ability to forecast while markets are uncertain, are fragmenting and becoming frictionless. Hence, firms interact as competitors, customers, and collaborators in a global, knowledge economy. Such changes have had an effect on marketing (Schindehutte, Morris and Pitt 2008) and reflect the type of marketing practiced in sma…
The Role of Pluriactivity for Continuity and Survival in Family Farm Firms
2014
Our study focuses on family farm firms as an important and yet under-researched type of family firms. We explore the entrepreneurial growth behavior in the context of family farm firms by focusing on the role of pluriactivity. By integrating the literature of family business strategies, EO, and growth intentions, this study of 1618 Finnish family farms seeks to understand the idea of pluriactivity as a strategic orientation of family farm firms leading towards the growth and renewal of their prevailing and future domains. Our study revealed that pluriactivity is associated with growthorientation and perceived strengths of the family farm firms. We identified four types of growth groups (Est…
Ethnic and Religious Conflicts in France
2011
International audience; This chapter presents a detailed analysis of current and historical interethnic relations in France. Kamiejski, De Oliveira, and Guimond apply several theories in exploration of the variables related to the development of the existent ethnic tensions in this region. Policy models are also evaluated and considered as means of engendering harmony in the future. Discussion of the most recent and largest immigrant group to France, the Maghrebians, reveals several factors associated with increasing tensions including the large degree of assumed difference in values, religion, and culture. The authors recognize that France has set the stage for positive interethnic relatio…
Extraversion and performance approach goal orientation : An integrative approach to personality
2019
Abstract Research shows that extraversion is unrelated to performance approach goal orientation, both at the trait- and the state-level. However, since previous studies have either focused on the trait- or the state-level, such a conclusion may be premature. Building upon the idea that acting against one’s trait consumes self-control resources, we reason that within-person deviations from one’s level of trait extraversion might negatively relate to performance approach goal orientation. Using experience sampling data from 47 employees across 10 days (N = 307), we found that deviations from one’s trait extraversion levels are associated with lower levels of performance approach goal orientat…

A rule‐based method to model myocardial fiber orientation in cardiac biventricular geometries with outflow tracts
2019
Rule-based methods are often used for assigning fiber orientation to cardiac anatomical models. However, existing methods have been developed using data mostly from the left ventricle. As a consequence, fiber information obtained from rule-based methods often does not match histological data in other areas of the heart such as the right ventricle, having a negative impact in cardiac simulations beyond the left ventricle. In this work, we present a rule-based method where fiber orientation is separately modeled in each ventricle following observations from histology. This allows to create detailed fiber orientation in specific regions such as the endocardium of the right ventricle, the inter…
A content analysis on family firms' association annual questionnaire
2010
The aim of this paper is to analyze the content of a questionnaire that is used in order to conduct a Finnish Family Firms’ Association’s annual barometer for its members. The content of the questionnaire is reflected to a relevant theory and compared with two other fairly similar questionnaires. Based on the analysis, reflections, and comparisons some suggestions for questionnaire modification are presented. The research question concerns what kind of data may be essential to measure among Finnish family firms. This paper aims at enhancing the Finnish Family Firms’ Association to conduct a questionnaire that may allow even deeper understanding on the situation and position of family busine…
A new method to improve the prediction of the celestial pole offsets
2018
Knowledge of the Earth’s changing rotation is fundamental to positioning objects in space and on the planet. Nowadays, the Earth’s orientation in space is expressed by five Earth Orientation Parameters (EOP). Many applications in astronomy, geosciences, and space missions require accurate EOP predictions. Operational predictions are released daily by the Rapid Service/Prediction Centre of the International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service (IERS). The prediction procedures and performances differ for the three EOP classes: polar motion, rotation angle (UT1-UTC), and the two celestial pole offsets (CPO), dX and dY. The IERS Annual Report 2016 shows Rapid Service CPO predictions er…
