Intersexual competition among humans: prosocial towards the opposite sex and proself towards the same sex?

2017

In a research conducted on a sample of participants from three countries (N = 256): Poland, Ukraine and Denmark, a hypothesis of the moderating impact of other person sex on the level of social value orientation of men and women was tested. The study applied the now rarely used method of measuring social value orientation: the Warsaw Method, which was expected to reveal more subtle differences between men and women than those observed in the studies using the most popular social value orientation measurement tools, such as decomposed games. The direction of the observed relationship proved to be compatible with the predictions resulting from the phenomenon of intrasexual competition for a p…

Fingerprint image enhancement using directional morphological filter

2005

Fingerprint images quality enhancement is a topic phase to ensure good performance in an automatic fingerprint identification system (AFIS) based on minutiae matching. In this paper a new fingerprint enhancement algorithm based on morphological filter is introduced. The algorithm is based on three steps: directional decomposition, morphological filter and composition. The performance of the proposed approach has been evaluated on two sets of images: the first one is DB3 database from Fingerprint Verification Competition (FVC) and the second one is self collected using an optical scanner

Solid state NMR analysis of peptides in membranes: Influence of dynamics and labeling scheme.

2010

The functional state of a membrane-active peptide is often defined by its conformation, molecular orientation, and its oligomeric state in the lipid bilayer. These "static" structural properties can be routinely studied by solid state NMR using isotope-labeled peptides. In the highly dynamic environment of a liquid crystalline biomembrane, however, the whole-body fluctuations of a peptide are also of paramount importance, although difficult to address and most often ignored. Yet it turns out that disregarding such motional averaging in calculating the molecular alignment from orientational NMR-constraints may give a misleading, if not false picture of the system. Here, we demonstrate that t…

Correlations between transmural mechanical and morphological properties in porcine thoracic descending aorta.

2015

Determination of correlations between transmural mechanical and morphological properties of aorta would provide a quantitative baseline for assessment of preventive and therapeutic strategies for aortic injuries and diseases. A multimodal and multidisciplinary approach was adopted to characterize the transmural morphological properties of descending porcine aorta. Histology and multi-photon microscopy were used for describing the media layer micro-architecture in the circumferential-radial plane, and Fourier Transform infrared imaging spectroscopy was utilized for determining structural protein, and total protein content. The distributions of these quantified properties across the media thi…

How does sexual attraction alter social interaction behavior? We examined the influence of sexual orientation on locomotor approach-avoidance behavior and interpersonal distance. We immersed androphilic and gynophilic male subjects into a virtual environment and presented various male and female virtual persons. In the first experiment, subjects took a step forward (approach) or backward (avoidance) in response to the sex of the virtual person. We measured reaction time, peak velocity, and step size, and obtained ratings of sexual attractiveness in every trial. In the second experiment, subjects had to approach the virtual person as if they were to engage in a social interaction. Here, we a…

ESE. Estudios sobre educación

2021

Englis…

Heroic Education: An Educational Project that Helps NEET People Orient Themselves to the Future, Work, and Training with the Skills They Need to Be S…

2022

Heroic education is an educational model that helps young people orient them selves towards the future, work, and training. It provides them with the skills they need to be successful in life. The program offers a variety of courses and activities that help participants learn about themselves and their world. It’s a great way for young people to get started on their path to success. The program is designed to help participants learn about their strengths and weaknesses. It also helps them learn about their options for the future. Heroic education is based on the principle that every young person has the potential to be a hero in their community. The program is offered in partnership with lo…

Online sexual activities in Hispanic women: A chance for non-heterosexual women?

2020

Abstract:  Sexuality is still modulated by social determinants that promote a passive role for women. In the recent decades, some findings have supported the influence of the Internet on sexuality. However, the relevance of online sexual activities for some groups such as Hispanic young women is still unknown. In this context, this study examines online sexual experience among 310 Hispanic women from Argentina, Mexico and Spain; as well as the role of their offline sexuality and country in this sexual pattern. As a result, Hispanic women report a variety of online sexual activities that ranges from searching information to masturbation. In particular, the Internet use for sexual purposes is…

Fiber Suspension Flows: Simulations and Existence Results

2016

Main result of this article is demonstrating the weak global in time well posedness result for the equations governing fiber suspension flows for sufficiently small initial data under mild assumptions about the nonlinear equation for fiber orientation dynamics and the constitutive law, thus extending the previous local in time results. The required estimate of growth of the H 2 norm is granted if the L ∞ norm of fiber orientation state variables remains bounded. This is the case for fiber orientation tensors.

Nuclear moments from laser spectroscopy

1988

The systematic laser spectroscopy measurements of nuclear spins, moments and charge radii from hyperfine structures and isotope shifts are reviewed from a methodical point of view. Examples are given for the typical experimental approaches and their results. Laser spectroscopy methods of direct nuclear g-factor measurement have interesting features in common with the low-temperature nuclear orientation technique. These are described in some detail and discussed in their particular physics context.
