An imprecise Fault Tree Analysis for the estimation of the Rate of OCcurrence Of Failure (ROCOF)

2013

Abstract The paper proposes an imprecise Fault Tree Analysis in order to characterize systems affected by the lack of reliability data. Differently from other research works, the paper introduces a classification of basic events into two categories, namely Initiators and Enablers . Actually, in real industrial systems some events refer to component failures or process parameter deviations from normal operating conditions ( Initiators ), whereas others refer to the functioning of safety barriers to be activated on demand ( Enablers ). As a consequence, the output parameter of interest is not the classical probability of occurrence of the top event, but its Rate of OCcurrence (ROCOF) over a s…

Eupelmus spermophilus Silvestri (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea), an Indigenous Olive Seed Wasp Potentially Harmful to Olive Growing in the Western Cape, …

2021

The objectives of this study were the specific taxonomic confirmation of the main olive seed wasp (OSW) attacking commercial olives in the Western Cape, to investigate monitoring methods and seasonal occurrence of OSW, to determine the potential economic damage of infestations, and to ascertain the geographic distribution of OSW in the regions where olives are cultivated in the Western Cape. Morphological and molecular methods were used to identify all the species obtained from cultivated olives at two trial sites near Stellenbosch and Agter-Paarl. Eupelmus spermophilus Silvestri (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea) was by far the most frequent and widespread olive seed wasp. Monitoring with yellow …

VALIDACIÓN EN CONTEXTO ESPAÑOL DE LA SUBPRUEBA DE INICIO DE LA ESCRITURA DE LA SHELL

2016

Abstract:VALIDATION IN THE SPANISH CONTEXT OF SHELL’S SUBTEST OF EMERGENT WRITING SKILLSBecause of a lack of research examining early learning skills involved in writing and, above all, the lack of tests evaluating it, the main objective of this work is the validation in the spanish context of SHELL’s subscales related to emergent writing skills. Participants were 119 students from the provinces of Castellón and Valencia, who have been evaluated when 4 years old. The administered instrument was a spanish version of the subtests related to early writing of SHELL scale in which the child has to choose between some letters, the one he needs to write some words (his/her name, “sea”, “sun”, “whi…

Development of a Taekwondo Combat Model Based on Markov Analysis

2019

The purpose of the present study was to examine male and female Olympic taekwondo competitors' movement patterns according to their tactical actions by applying a Markov processes analysis. To perform this study, 11,474 actions by male competitors and 12,980 actions by female competitors were compiled and analyzed. The results yielded 32 significant sequences among male competitors and 30 among female competitors. Male competitors demonstrated 11 sequences initiated by an attack, 11 initiated by a counterattack, and 10 initiated by a defensive action. Female competitors demonstrated nine sequences initiated by an attack, 11 initiated by a counterattack, and 10 initiated by a defensive move.…

Contextual diversity favors the learning of new words in children regardless of their comprehension skills

2021

Available online 6 November 2021 Recent research has shown the benefits of high contextual diversity, defined as the number of different contexts in which a word appears, when incidentally learning new words. These benefits have been found both in laboratory settings and in ecological settings such as the classroom during regular hours. To examine the nature of this effect in young readers aged 11–13 years, we analyzed whether these benefits are modulated by the individuals’ reading comprehension scores; that is, would better comprehenders benefit the most from contextual diversity? The manipulation of contextual diversity was done by inserting the novel words into three different contexts/…

Zur Vaterschaftsplausibilität im HLA-System. Untersuchungen unter Benutzung verschiedener Haplotypfrequenztabellen

1981

Serious discrepancies occur, when different haplotype frequency tables are used for calculating the “EM value” (\(\left( {\lg \frac{Y}{X} + 10} \right)\)) of a mother-child-putative-father-combination (MCPFC). These are due to the different frequencies of low frequent haplotypes. Since the correlation between the haplotype frequencies of two different tables for haplotypes lower than 3.5 X 10-3 may even be negative, it seems justified to calculate the EM values with the minimum haplotype frequency of 1X 10-3. For three haplotype frequency tables (with a respectively adapted number of antigens) the EM value was calculated for all MCPFC of all “full house” cases in which the genotype of fathe…

Status of the Golden Eagle Aquila chrysaetos in Sicily

2017

In the present work, we review all the relevant information since the first Regional Atlas of breeding birds (Massa 1985), and we add field data on the species occurrence and site occupancy relative to the period January 2014-December 2016, in order to update the species’ status in Sicily.

Fragment Difficulty in Priming on Word-Completion Tests

2006

Word-fragment completion is a frequently used test in implicit memory research. In this test priming is the relevant variable. Priming is obtained by subtracting the proportion of nonstudied word fragments correctly completed (called “completion difficulty baseline”) from the studied word fragments correctly completed. Since completion difficulty can spuriously vary greatly between experimental conditions, its effect on magnitude of priming is studied. Normative frequency of occurrence of target words was considered because their influence over performance is known. In an experiment using a word-fragment completion test, participants' completion of fragments at three levels of completion d…

Epidemiology of Q fever in Italy and in other Mediterranean countries

1987

Abstract The history of Q fever in Italy may be divided into three periods: epidemic in character after the Second World War, endemic occurrence from 1960 to 1980, and sporadic occurrence at present. Clinical symptoms are unspecific, and diagnosis must be confirmed by serology and isolation of the causative agent. The reported incidence is consequently underestimated. Results are reported of a seroepidemiologic survey in animals and humans in the Italian region and western Sicily. In the Mediterranean area several epidemic foci are still present. The need of further studies to evaluate the incidence of Q fever and to shed more light upon the epidemiology of Coxiella burnetii infections is s…

HEV Occurrence in Waste and Drinking Water Treatment Plants

2020

Hepatitis E virus (HEV), particularly zoonotic genotype 3, is present in environmental waters worldwide, especially in industrialized countries. Thus, monitoring the presence of HEV in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is an emerging topic due to the importance of reusing water on a global level. Given the limited data, this study aimed to monitor the occurrence of HEV in influent and effluent water in waste- and drinking-water treatment plants (WWTPs and DWTPs). To this end, different procedures to concentrate HEV in influent and effluent water from WWTPs and DWTPs were initially evaluated. The evaluated procedures resulted in average HEV recoveries of 15.2, 19.9, and 16.9% in influent, …
