2002

Extrapolation using JETSET 7.4 is used to correct down to X = 0.0. The second DSYS error, where relevant, shows the estimated uncertainty on the extrapolation.

Interactions between dietary n-3 fatty acids and genetic variants and risk of disease

2012

Nutritional genomics has undergone rapid development and the concept is now very popular with the general public. Therefore, there is increasing demand for knowledge on adapting dietary composition to the genome. Our aim has been to undertake a systematic review so as to find out the level of evidence existing on whether the effects of n-3 fatty acids on health can be modulated by genetic variation. A systematic literature search was conducted on studies that jointly analyse the effect of one or more genetic variants in candidate genes and n-3 fatty acids. Both observational and experimental studies were included. Results are classified in accordance with whether the study was undertaken on…

Effect of ethanol on polyunsaturated fatty acid biosynthesis in hepatocytes from spontaneously hypertensive rats.

2001

Background: Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) play a major role in membrane structures that are modified during alcoholism. PUFA are also precursors of second messengers—eicosanoids—involved in the regulation of blood pressure. Alcohol has been related to hypertension and to alterations in liver PUFA metabolism. We investigated the effects of ethanol on PUFA biogenesis in hepatocytes of Wistar Kyoto (WKY) rats and Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats (SHR). The effects of a diet enriched with n-3 PUFA, which is known to modulate hypertension, were also studied. Methods: Isolated hepatocytes from male normotensive Wistar Kyoto (WKY) rats and SHR were incubated for 60 min in the presence of label…

Seasonal characterization of nutritional and antioxidant properties of Opuntia ficus-indica [(L.) Mill.] mucilage

2021

Abstract Opuntia ficus-indica fruit and cladodes are a source of mucilage, a carbohydrate complex, as well as of phytochemicals and other nutrients, useful in the food industry. Despite the environmental-based composition variability has been studied, there is no information on its seasonal variability, which is particularly important for its industrial use. In this study, some technological, nutritional, and bioactive properties of O. ficus-indica cladodes mucilage were analyzed during the seasonal growth period. Total proteins did not change during the whole period and the lipid content significantly decreased from winter to the onset of summer. The fatty acid profile showed high levels o…

Inhibition of the HER2 pathway by n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids prevents breast cancer in fat-1 transgenic mice

2013

Overexpression of the tyrosine kinase receptor, ErbB2/HER2/Neu, occurs in 25–30% of invasive breast cancer (BC) with poor patient prognosis. Due to confounding factors, inconsistencies still remain regarding the protective effects of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) on BC. We therefore evaluated whether fat-1 transgenic mice, endogenously synthesizing n-3 PUFAs from n-6 PUFAs, were protected against BC development, and we then aimed to study in vivo a mechanism potentially involved in such protection. E0771 BC cells were implanted into fat-1 and wild-type (WT) mice. After tumorigenesis examination, we analyzed the expression of proteins involved in the HER2 signaling pathway and lipi…
