A Combined Fuzzy Semantic Similarity Measure In Owl Ontologies
2008
An algorithm is presented in this paper to calculate a semantic similarity measure inside an OWL ontology. The formulation is based on a combined measure taking into account the two most important aspects involved in the similarity computation. These are the structural properties of a concept, and the information content inside the ontology. We define a fuzzy system to blend these information sources with a training process over some ontologies. Finding a similarity measure between concepts of an ontology is a fundamental topic to accomplish information exchange on the Web. Through this measure it is possible to perform sophisticated queries over the web where the user is able to request co…
A Structural Approach to Infer Recurrent Relations in Data
2014
Extracting knowledge from a great amount of collected data has been a key problem in Artificial Intelligence during the last decades. In this context, the word "knowledge" refers to the non trivial new relations not easily deducible from the observation of the data. Several approaches have been used to accomplish this task, ranging from statistical to structural methods, often heavily dependent on the particular problem of interest. In this work we propose a system for knowledge extraction that exploits the power of an ontology approach. Ontology is used to describe, organise and discover new knowledge. To show the effectiveness of our system in extracting and generalising the knowledge emb…
An Approach to Enhance Chatbot Semantic Power and Maintainability: Experiences within the FRASI Project
2012
The paper illustrates the implementation and semantic enhancement of a domain-oriented Question-Answering system based on a pattern-matching chat bot technology, developed within an industrial project, named FRASI. The main difficulty in building a KB for a chat bot is to handwrite all possible question-answer pairs that constitute the KB. The proposed approach simplifies the chat bot realization thanks to two solutions. The first one uses an ontology, which is exploited in a twofold manner: to construct dynamic answers as a result of an inference process about the domain, and to automatically populate, off-line, the chat bot KB with sentences that can be derived from the ontology, describi…

The place of livestock in human-nonhuman relationship among the Wayuu
2020
In the ethnology of indigenous LSA, the Wayuu case has always been considered a peculiar one. Among the main features which make difficult to insert it in the comparative debate on indigenous models of sociality and cosmology in this area, one can mention: pristine introduction of cattle raising; maintenance of political semi-autonomy till very recent times; development, already in the colonial period, of forms of social hierarchy based on ownership of livestock and other material goods; articulation of these forms with a system of matrilineal descent groups; interplay among the inclusive character of the descendants of mixed unions and the shifting of the traits selected for marking ethnic…
Towards a More Effective Hospital: Helping Health Professionals to Learn from their Own Practice by Developing an Easy to use Clinical Processes Quer…
2016
Application of complex socio-technical systems theory to optimization of clinical processes in hospitals highlights the importance of the acceptance and promotion of responsible autonomy among health professionals. Therefore the independent ability for clinicians to search for answers to questions which are outside the scope of pre-made reports is important. However, the ad-hoc data querying process is slow and error prone due to inability of health professionals to access data directly without involving IT experts. The problem lies in the complexity of means used to query data. We propose a new natural language- and star ontology-based ad-hoc data querying approach which reduces the steep …
Traitpedia: a collaborative effort to gather species traits
2018
Abstract Summary Traitpedia is a collaborative database aimed to collect binary traits in a tabular form for a growing number of species. Availability and implementation Traitpedia can be accessed from http://cbdm-01.zdv.uni-mainz.de/~munoz/traitpedia. Supplementary information Supplementary data are available at Bioinformatics online.
Ontology languages for the semantic web: A never completely updated review
2006
This paper gives a never completely account of approaches that have been used for the research community for representing knowledge. After underlining the importance of a layered approach and the use of standards, it starts with early efforts used for artificial intelligence researchers. Then recent approaches, aimed mainly at the semantic web, are described. Coding examples from the literature are presented in both sections. Finally, the semantic web ontology creation process, as we envision it, is introduced.
Representing and Reasoning for Spatiotemporal Ontology Integration
2004
International audience; The World-Wide Web hosts many autonomous and heterogeneous information sources. In the near future each source may be described by its own ontology. The distributed nature of ontology development will lead to a large number of local ontologies covering overlapping domains. Ontology integration will then become an essential capability for effective interoperability and information sharing. Integration is known to be a hard problem, whose complexity increases particularly in the presence of spatiotemporal information. Space and time entail additional problems such as the heterogeneity of granularity used in representing spatial and temporal features. Spatio-temporal ob…
Multi-Domain Retrieval of Geospatial Data Sources Implementing a Semantic Catalogue
2015
International audience; Nowadays, the expertise of a user plays an important role in the search and retrieval in the information systems that usually combines general and specialized knowledge in the construction of queries. In addition, most of the queries systems are currently restricted on specific domains. Tackling these issues, we propose a methodology that implements a semantic catalogue in order to provide a smart queries system for retrieving data sources on the web by means of the extension of the user expertise. We propose the combination of a query expansion method, and the use of similarity measures and controlled vocabularies. Thus, it allows the system to recommend data source…
