Cytokine expression in tears of patients with glaucoma or dry eye disease: A prospective, observational cohort study.

2018

Background: The aim of this study was to assess the expression of cytokines/chemokines in tears from patients with non-advanced primary open-angle glaucoma and patients with non-severe dry eye disease versus healthy controls. Methods: This prospective, observational cohort study enrolled patients with confirmed or suspected non-advanced primary open-angle glaucoma who received any prostaglandin analogue monotherapy for longer than 6 months, patients with non-severe dry eye disease, and healthy controls. Expression of interleukin-1β, interleukin-2, interleukin-4, interleukin-5, interleukin-6, interleukin-8, interleukin-10, and interleukin-12; tumor necrosis factor α; vascular endothelial gro…

Balance evaluation in haemophilic preadolescent patients using Nintendo Wii Balance Board®

2016

Introduction: Alterations in the musculoskeletal system, especially in the lower limbs, limit physical activity and affect balance and walking. Postural impairments in haemophilic preteens could increase the risk of bleeding events and deteriorate the physical condition, promoting the progression of haemophilic arthropathy. Aim: This study aims to evaluate static postural balance in haemophilic children, assessed by means of the Wii Balance Board® (WBB). Methods: Nineteen children with haemophilia and 19 without haemophilia aged 9-10 years, have participated in this study. Postural balance was assessed by performing four tests, each one lasting 15 s: bipodal eyes open (BEO), bipodal eyes cl…

Vascular risk factors in glaucoma: The results of a national survey

2007

Background The role of vascular risk factors in glaucoma is still being debated. To assess the importance of vascular risk factors in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), data from the medical history of 2,879 POAG patients and 973 age-matched controls were collected and analyzed. Methods Design: observational survey. Setting: 35 Italian academic centers. Study population: POAG patients and age-matched controls. In order to reduce bias consecutive patients were included. Observation procedures: data concerning vascular risk factors were collected for all patients with a detailed questionnaire. A complete ophthalmological examination with assessment of intraocular pressure (IOP)…

Deep sclerectomy versus punch trabeculectomy with or without phacoemulsification: a randomized clinical trial.

2004

Purpose: To compare the efficacy of non-penetrating deep sclerectomy without implant with Crozafon-De Laage punch trabeculectomy, and to evaluate the effect of simultaneous temporal approach phacoemulsification on both techniques. Patients and Methods: Setting: Department of Ophthalmology of the University of Palermo. Design: Prospective randomized clinical trial. Patients and intervention procedures: Sixty-five patients (65 eyes) with primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) or pseudoexfoliative glaucoma (PEXG): 32 eyes underwent non-penetrating deep sclerectomy (NPDS), 17 as single procedure and 15 combined with phacoemulsification (phaco- NPDS), and 33 eyes underwent punch trabeculectomy (PT),…

Deep sclerectomy versus punch trabeculectomy: effect of low-dosage mitomycin C.

2004

<i>Purpose:</i> To compare IOP behavior after deep sclerectomy (DS) and trabeculectomy with the Crozafon-De Laage Punch (TP), using low-dosage intraoperative mitomycin C (MMC) in both techniques. <i>Methods:</i> The study was a prospective randomized clinical trial. All patients met inclusion and exclusion criteria, and were scheduled for glaucoma surgery. Forty patients were randomized to undergo either a nonpenetrating DS with MMC (DSMMC) (19 eyes) or a TP with MMC (TPMMC) (21 eyes). Postoperative examinations were performed at the 1st day, the 1st, 2nd and 3rd weeks and the 1st, 3rd, 6th, 9th and 12th months. Postoperative complications, number of antiglaucoma med…

Brinzolamide/brimonidine fixed-dose combination bid as an adjunct to a prostaglandin analog for open-angle glaucoma/ocular hypertension.

2019

Purpose: To evaluate the additive intraocular pressure–lowering effect of twice-daily brinzolamide 1%/brimonidine 0.2% fixed-dose combination (BBFC) as an adjunct to a prostaglandin analog (PGA) in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension insufficiently controlled with PGA monotherapy. Methods: In this Phase 4, double-masked trial, patients aged ⩾18 years, with a mean intraocular pressure of ⩾19 and <32 mm Hg in at least one eye were randomized (1:1) to receive BBFC + PGA ( n = 96) or vehicle + PGA ( n = 92) for 6 weeks. The primary endpoint was the mean change in diurnal intraocular pressure from baseline (averaged over 09:00 and 11:00 h) at Week 6. Results: The mean diu…

Fine Structural Evaluation of the Iris After Unilateral Treatment With Latanoprost in Patients Undergoing Bilateral Trabeculectomy (The Mainz II Stud…

2003

Objective To investigate by masked electron microscopy whether 6 months of topical latanoprost caused pathological changes in the peripheral iris of patients with glaucoma. Methods Seventeen patients with bilateral primary open-angle glaucoma requiring trabeculectomy were recruited for this study. The iridectomy taken during surgery on the first eye served as a control. The second test eye was treated topically with latanoprost for 6 months before its trabeculectomy. Fourteen patients completed the treatment arm of the study, and 1 of these underwent marked color change. As a result, 31 iridectomy specimens were fixed, coded, and evaluated. Results The specimens were evaluated for evidence …

Predictive value of heidelberg retina tomograph parameters for the development of glaucoma in the European glaucoma prevention study

2015

Purpose To determine whether baseline Heidelberg Retina Tomograph (HRT) measurements of the optic disc are associated with the development of open-angle glaucoma (OAG) in individuals with ocular hypertension in the European Glaucoma Prevention Study (EGPS). Design Retrospective analysis of a prospective, randomized, multicenter, double-masked, controlled clinical trial. Methods There were 489 participants in the HRT Ancillary Study to the EGPS. Each baseline HRT parameter was assessed in univariate and multivariate proportional hazards models to determine its association with the development of OAG. Proportional hazards models were used to identify HRT variables that predicted which partici…

Prediction Accuracy of a Novel Dynamic Structure-Function Model for Glaucoma Progression

2014

Purpose To assess the prediction accuracy of a novel dynamic structure-function (DSF) model to monitor glaucoma progression. Methods Longitudinal data of paired rim area (RA) and mean sensitivity (MS) from 220 eyes with ocular hypertension or primary open-angle glaucoma enrolled in the Diagnostic Innovations in Glaucoma Study or the African Descent and Glaucoma Evaluation Study were included. Rim area and MS were expressed as percent of mean normal based on an independent dataset of 91 healthy eyes. The DSF model uses centroids as estimates of the current state of the disease and velocity vectors as estimates of direction and rate of change over time. The first three visits were used to pre…

Surgical conversion with graft salvage as a definitive treatment for persistent type II endoleak causing sacenlargement

2015

Objective The goal of this study was to present open surgical conversion with graft salvage or "semiconversion" as a definitive and safe treatment for untreatable and persistent type II endoleaks causing sac enlargement after endovascular aneurysm repair. Methods Between January 2001 and December 2014, 25 of 1623 endovascular aortic repair (EVAR) patients were selected as candidates for open semiconversion. The indication was persistent type II endoleak in 13 patients (12 of whom received previous attempts of embolization), type I and II endoleak in 2 patients, and sac growth without imaging evidence of endoleak in the other 10. After the infrarenal aorta was prepared (via a retroperitoneal…
