The paper investigates the role of masonry infill walls on the seismic fragility of reinforced concrete structures subject to mainshock/aftershock sequences. An assessment framework aimed at determining aftershock fragility curves of bare frames and infilled frames is presented. The framework is based on a Double Incremental Dynamic Analysis (D-IDA) approach, which provides the adoption of ground motions defined by combining a fixed intensity mainshock with a set of variable intensity aftershocks. Aluminium distribution in an Earth's non–primitive lower mantle

The aluminium incorporation mechanism of perovskite was explored by means of quantum mechanics in combination with equilibrium/off-equilibrium thermodynamics under the pressure-temperature conditions of the Earth's lower mantle (from 24 to 80 GPa). Earth's lower mantle was modelled as a geochemically non-primitive object because of an enrichment by 3 wt% of recycled crustal material (MORB component). The compositional modelling takes into account both chondrite and pyrolite reference models. The capacity of perovskite to host Al was modelled through an Al2O3 exchange process in an unconstrained Mg-perovskite + Mg-Al-perovskite + free-Al2O3(corundum) system. Laser ultrasonics for defect evaluation on coated railway axles

Abstract This scientific paper focuses on the application of an advanced non-destructive technique for an effective inspection of railway axles. The method pertains to ultrasonic techniques, which are widely used in the railway field. The experimental investigation was carried out on simulated defects tooled near the cross section reduction of the axle, in order to simulate fatigue cracks which, due to notch effect, can trigger crack propagation and axle failure. From fracture to damage mechanics: a behavior law for microcracked composites using the concept of crack opening mode

International audience; Many studies have been carried out in order to build a coherent macroscopic behavior law for a composite containing microcracks. All of them are only partially coherent and none of them is complete. This study proposes a hyperelastic behavior law for a microcracked composite, respecting all the conditions associated with the damage activation/deactivation, stress/strain relation continuity, induced anisotropy and the Clausius–Duhem inequality. This approach is based on the definition of the Crack Opening Mode for Damage Mechanics as it exists in Fracture Mechanics.

Evaluation of the fracture performance of different rubberised bitumens based on the essential work of fracture

The fracture performance of rubberised bitumen in addition to one pre-treated with a Warm Mix Additive (Sasobit®) was investigated using different test methods measuring different damage mechanisms. Two Recycled Tyre Rubber (RTR) modifiers together with two base binders were blended in the laboratory to produce various combinations of Recycled Tyre Rubber Modified Bitumens (RTR-MBs). The first RTR is a standard recycled polymer derived from discarded truck and passenger car tyres by ambient grinding. The second RTR consists of 100% recycled truck tyres derived by cryogenic grinding and pre-treated with special oil and WMA to allow further decrease of asphalt mixture production temperatures.…

Behaviour of concrete deep beams with openings and low shear span-to-depth ratio

Abstract The goal of this study is to experimentally and analytically evaluate the influence of circular openings in reinforced concrete deep beams with low shear span-to-depth ratio. Twenty reinforced concrete small-scale deep beams with or without openings were tested in flexure under four-point loading. The beams had a small shear span-to-depth ratio in order to stress the shear behavior. The specimens had different reinforcement arrangements and opening positions. The load was transmitted to the specimen with bearing plates having the same side length as the beam. Background and Objectives: To evaluate anterior capsule opening (ACO) contraction and late intraocular lens (IOL) dislocation after cataract surgery in patients with weak or partially absent zonular support and assess methods of reducing these complications. Materials and Methods: For this prospective study, we enlisted cataract surgery patients in our hospital with preoperative diagnoses of weak zonules. The Checklist of Sicilian Macrofungi: Second Edition

Approximately 30 years after the publication of the first Sicilian checklist of macrofungi, a new updated version is presented here. The census of macromycetes was carried out through periodic observations in different agricultural and forest ecosystems, in urban areas, in public and private gardens, and in botanical gardens. The 1919 infraspecific taxa included in 508 genera belonging to 152 families were collected in the Sicilian territory. Ectomycorrhizal fungi are the most represented ecological category, followed by saprotrophs on wood, saprotrophs on litter, and terricolous saprotrophs.
