Developing a conceptual framework for the co-operative and mutual enterprise business model

2018

AbstractThe co-operative and mutual enterprise business model represents a unique type of organisation that has a dual purpose focused on both economic and social goals. For nearly two centuries it has played an important role in economic development, job creation and addressing market failures. However, despite its potential importance to economic development it has been largely ignored within the mainstream economics and management literature. This paper provides an overview of the nature of the co-operative and mutual enterprise business model and also proposes a business model framework or ‘canvas’ that can be used for research, teaching and strategic analysis.

Co-simulation and Formal Verification of Co-operative Drone Control With Logic-Based Specifications

2021

Abstract Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) co-operative systems are complex cyber-physical systems that integrate a high-level control algorithm with pre-existing closed implementations of lower-level vehicle kinematics. In model-driven development, simulation is one of the techniques that are usually applied, together with testing, in the analysis of system behaviours. This work proposes a method and tools to validate the design of UAV co-operative systems based on co-simulation and formal verification. The method uses the Prototype Verification System, an interactive theorem prover based on a higher-order logic language, and the Functional Mock-up Interface, a widely accepted standard for co-…

Predictors of surgical outcomes of minimally invasive right colectomy: the MERCY study

2022

PURPOSE: The optimal approach for minimally invasive (MIS) right colectomy remains under debate. This study aimed to describe surgical trends in the treatment of nonmetastatic right colon cancer and to identify predictors of short-term surgical outcomes. METHODS: A retrospective multicenter cohort study of Minimally-invasivE surgery for oncologic Right ColectomY (MERCY) was conducted on patients who underwent laparoscopic or robotic right colectomy between 2014 and 2020. Classification tree approach was used to describe the extracorporeal (EA) or intracorporeal (IA) anastomosis choice. Mixed-model regressions were used to identify patient- and surgery-related factors predictive of postopera…

Threshold FFR, Impaired CFR, and IMR: Macrovascular or Microvascular Disease?

2016

An 80-year-old patient with recurrent stable angina underwent coronary angiography. An intermediate lesion was demonstrated at the ostium of the LAD, which was studied with FFR. The finding of an abnormal CFR was an incidental one.

Use of the KSVM-based system for the definition, validation and identification of the incisional hernia recurrence risk factors

2019

BACKGROUND: Incisional hernia is one of the most common complications after abdominal surgery with an incidence rate of 11 to 20% post laparotomy. Many different factors can be considered as risk factors of incisional hernia recurrence. The aim of this study is to confirm and to validate the incisional hernia recurrence risk factors and to identify and to validate new ones. METHODS: In the period from July 2007 to July 2017, 154 patients were selected and subjected to incisional hernia repair. The surgical operations were conducted under general anaesthesia. Patients received antibiotic prophylaxis when indicated, according to the hospital prophylaxis scheme. Inclusion criteria of the study…

Feature selection for KNN classifier to improve accurate detection of subthalamic nucleus during deep brain stimulation surgery in Parkinson’s patien…

2017

The tremor and dystonia associated with Parkinson’s disease can be treated with deep brain stimulation (DBS) implanted into the subthalamic nucleus (STN). The accurate STN detection is a complex neurosurgeon task during a DBS surgery since a proper fixing of stimulating electrodes will impact on the patient’s future life. The brain electrical signals obtained with Micro Electrodes Register (MER) are acquired at different depths of the brain during DBS surgery to detect STN. In our previous work, we found good accuracy performance to improve the localization of STN using K-Nearest Neighbours (KNN) supervised learning algorithm. However, for real-time classification, it is essential to reduce…

Stability of tacrolimus ophthalmic solution

2017

Purpose The stability of 0.3-mg/mL tacrolimus ophthalmic solution at different storage temperatures was studied. Methods A sterile ophthalmic solution of 0.3 mg/mL tacrolimus was prepared in triplicate under aseptic conditions by diluting tacrolimus in eye drops. Three aliquots of this solution were transferred into polypropylene bottles and stored at 25, 2–8, or −15 to −25 °C. Samples were collected immediately after preparation and at selected time points and assayed in triplicate using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Samples were also visually examined for macroscopic changes. The 0.3-mg/mL tacrolimus solution was also exposed to acidic treatment and heat to force its degr…

Educational value of surgical videos on YouTube: quality assessment of laparoscopic appendectomy videos by senior surgeons vs. novice trainees

2019

Background To prepare for surgery, surgeons often recur to surgical videos, with YouTube being reported as the preferred source. This study aimed to compare the evaluation of three surgical trainees and three senior surgeons of the 25 most viewed laparoscopic appendectomy videos listed on YouTube. Additionally, we assessed the video conformity to the published guidelines on how to report laparoscopic surgery videos (LAP-VEGaS). Methods Based on the number of visualization, the 25 most viewed videos on laparoscopic appendectomy uploaded on YouTube between 2010 and 2018 were selected. Videos were evaluated on the surgical technical performance (GOALS score), critical view of safety (CVS), and…

Deviations in pedestrian itineraries in urban areas: a method to assess the role of environmental factors

2010

Walking has long been neglected in urban-mobility research, but it is now making its way into numerous studies using various approaches. Empirical data are often processed in well-known models of flow allocation to study the behaviour of pedestrians and to identify their preferences. However, these models assume that route choices are predetermined at the start of each trip and do not admit any possible intervening decision along these trips. We propose to overcome this limitation through a new method for the analysis of pedestrian behaviour. This method, which we call ‘deviation analysis’ consists of (1) identifying the intersections from which a pedestrian has chosen a route longer than …
