Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplantation for Acquired Aplastic Anemia: Better Outcome with Bone Marrow as Compared to Peripheral Blood in HLA-Matched Sib…

2009

Abstract Abstract 876 Background: Transplantation of bone marrow (BM) from a HLA-matched sibling donor is an effective treatment for severe aplastic anemia (AA) with long-term survival in excess of 80%. In the recent years there were two trends in allogeneic stem cell transplantation (SCT) for AA: (1) increasing proportion of transplants performed from matched unrelated donors (MUD) and (2) increasing proportion of transplants using peripheral blood progenitor cells (PBSC) as stem cell source instead of BM. A similar switch to PBSC over BM grafts is reported in leukemia transplants. PBSC grafts for leukemia are associated with higher rates of chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD). This …

0432: Impact of admission hyperglycemia on one-year mortality in non-diabetic patients admitted for rescue PCI: Data from the “Observatoire des infar…

2014

BackgroundRescue percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is associated with improved clinical outcomes for ST-segment myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients after failed fibrinolysis therapy. Hyperglycemia on admission has been shown to be a powerful predictor of mortality after acute myocardial infarction, particularly in non-diabetic patients. The aim of our study was to assess the predictive value of admission glucose levels on long-term mortality in patients with rescue PCI.Patients and MethodsFrom the “Observatoire des infarctus de Côte d’Or” (RICO) survey, 510 consecutive non-diabetic STEMI patients admitted to the intensive care unit for rescue PCI after failed fibrinolysis therapy …

ACTIVATION (PercutAneous Coronary inTervention prIor to transcatheter aortic VAlve implantaTION)

2021

Abstract Objectives This study sought to determine if percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) prior to transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) in patients with significant coronary artery disease would produce noninferior clinical results when compared with no PCI (control arm). Background PCI in patients undergoing TAVR is not without risk, and there are no randomized data to inform clinical practice. Methods Patients with severe symptomatic aortic stenosis and significant coronary artery disease with Canadian Cardiovascular Society class ≤2 angina were randomly assigned to receive PCI or no PCI prior to TAVR. The primary endpoint was a composite of all-cause death or rehospitalizat…

Spectral imaging as a tool for the evaluation of skin cancer post-operative scars

2020

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the USA and worldwide.1 An early diagnosis is the key to a successful treatment. Among the skin cancers, the malignant melanoma (MM) accounts for 1% of the cases while it is responsible for the majority of deaths. Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common form of skin cancer with a very low mortality rate.2 Unfortunately, skin cancer recurrence is a common problem for MM and BCC patients. We propose a post-operative scar screening with non-invasive autofluorescence (AF) imaging to detect an early growth of any residual tissue from the cancer removal procedure. The screening images can serve also as a visual evidence for the post-op patien…

Stump appendicitis. A case report

2016

Highlights • Stump appendicitis (SA) is a rare, but noteworthy, diagnosis that warrants early detection. • Delay in the diagnosis of SA may result in serious complications like stump gangrene, perforation and peritonitis. • More research is needed to identify strategies to prevent SA. • We underline the emergent role of lower endoscopy to clarify diagnosis resolve the symptoms. • Surgeons need to have a heightened awareness of the possibility of SA.

Intravascular Ultrasound-based Imaging Modalities for Tissue Characterisation

2014

Atherosclerosis is the leading cause of cardiovascular mortality and morbidity in the developed world. Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) is a widely used imaging modality providing complementary diagnostic information to angiography regarding the vessel wall of the coronary arteries. IVUS has been used for assessment of ambiguous angiographic lesions, evaluation of new interventional devices and in atherosclerosis progression-regression trials. However, the standard gray-scale IVUS has limited value for the accurate identification of specific plaque components. This limitation has been partially over- come by introduction of new IVUS-based imaging methods such as: virtual histology IVUS, iMAP…

A Bifurcation with Surprise

2016

FFR was assessed after provisional stenting of a bifurcation stenosis in the proximal LAD in a very young patient. Pull-back demonstrated a good outcome after PCI, and it revealed the existence of an additional stenosis which, due to its very proximal location in the LAD, could not be seen at angiography. This case emphasizes the importance of performing FFR measurements during sustained hyperemia and using a slow pull-back technique.

Angiographic follow-up results of a randomized study on angioplasty versus bypass surgery (GABI Trial)

1996

Although several randomized trials have been performed to compare the outcomes of percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) and coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG) in patients with multivessel disease, there is little data available on angiographic follow-up results. The present substudy of the German angioplasty versus bypass surgery investigation (GABI Trial) compares the angiographic revascularization status in these two cases 6 months after treatment. Follow-up angiograms were available in 102 CABG patients and 117 PTCA patients. Although the protocol excluded patients with total occlusion, on follow-up 6 months after treatment we found total occlusion of 94 native arterie…

Klassifikation und Therapie von Endolecks nach endovaskulärer Behandlung von abdominellen Aortenaneurysmen

2005

This article describes the classification of endoleaks after endovascular treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysms, thereby summarizing the most important problems of this endovascular technique. The correct classification of endoleaks is a prerequisite for interdisciplinary discussion. It is indispensable for professional reporting of the pathological findings and for the decision making as to the adequate treatment of endoleaks. Irrespective of the types of stent graft and property of the material, five endoleak types are defined in the literature: leakage at the anchor sites (type I); leakage due to collateral arteries (type II); defective stent grafts (type III); leakage due to porosity …
