We conducted a multicenter interventional study to assess the efficacy of Therakos ECP to treat steroid-resistant graft-vs-host disease (SRes-GVHD) after allogeneic HSCT and to identify biomarkers of GVHD response. A total of 62 patients were treated for acute SRes-GVHD (n = 37) or chronic SRes-GVHD (n = 25). Median time to best response was 35 days (range, 28-85) and 90 days (range, 27-240) in acute and chronic SRes-GVHD, respectively. Overall, 27 patients (72.9%) with SRes-aGVHD responded to treatment (40.5% CR and 32.4% PR). We evaluated the ability of one-month follow-up contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) with second-generation contrast agent in monitoring radio frequency ablation (RFA) and transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) treatments of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). One-hundred forty-eight HCCs were studied using CEUS: 110 nodules were treated with RFA [41/110 RFA were performed using a pretreatment and an immediate postablation evaluation using CEUS (group 1); 69/110 using only US guidance (group 2)] and 38 nodules treated with TACE. Deep femoral artery pseudoaneurysms (DFAPs) are rare and generally occur after penetrating trauma or surgical procedures. A 36-year-old obese man presented with pain in correspondence of the anterior-lateral thigh after 6 months from gunshot wound. Duplex and computed tomography (CT) showed a bilobed right DFAP (maximal diameter 12.9 cm). The patient was managed urgently, under local anesthesia, by placement in the distal DFA of a Viabahn 8 Ã 100-mm stent graft (W L Gore & Associates, Inc). The Buccal Mucosal Graft For Urethral Reconstruction: A Preliminary Report

Autologous buccal mucosa as a substitute for urethral epithelium was studied in 2 dogs and used in 6 patients with difficult urethral reconstruction problems. The indications for an operation in these patients were failed hypospadias repairs with limited skin in 3, severe structure disease after hypospadias repair in 1, a short urethra in 1 and epispadias in 1. Three urethral fistulas and 1 meatal stenosis occurred in 3 patients. No urethral stricture or diverticulum was noted, and the final outcome was good functionally and cosmetically in all patients. This technique is useful for urethral reconstruction when local skin is not available.
Non‐invasive haemoglobin measurement as an index test to detect pre‐operative anaemia in elective surgery patients – a prospective study

Non-invasive haemoglobin measurement using absolute values lacks the precision to be the sole basis for the treatment of pre-operative anaemia. However, it can possibly serve as a screening test, indexing 'anaemia' with high sensitivity when values remain under prespecified cut-off values. Based on previous data, non-invasive haemoglobin cut-off values (146 g.l-1 for women and 152 g.l-1 for men) detect true anaemia with 99% sensitivity. An index test with these prespecified cut-off values was verified by prospective measurement of non-invasive and invasive haemoglobin pre-operatively in elective surgical patients.
