Scalable and effective multi-level entangled photon states: a promising tool to boost quantum technologies

2021

Abstract Multi-level (qudit) entangled photon states are a key resource for both fundamental physics and advanced applied science, as they can significantly boost the capabilities of novel technologies such as quantum communications, cryptography, sensing, metrology, and computing. The benefits of using photons for advanced applications draw on their unique properties: photons can propagate over long distances while preserving state coherence, and they possess multiple degrees of freedom (such as time and frequency) that allow scalable access to higher dimensional state encoding, all while maintaining low platform footprint and complexity. In the context of out-of-lab use, photon generation…

An operator-like description of love affairs

2010

We adopt the so--called \emph{occupation number representation}, originally used in quantum mechanics and recently considered in the description of stock markets, in the analysis of the dynamics of love relations. We start with a simple model, involving two actors (Alice and Bob): in the linear case we obtain periodic dynamics, whereas in the nonlinear regime either periodic or quasiperiodic solutions are found. Then we extend the model to a love triangle involving Alice, Bob and a third actress, Carla. Interesting features appear, and in particular we find analytical conditions for the linear model of love triangle to have periodic or quasiperiodic solutions. Numerical solutions are exhibi…

A Phenomenological Operator Description of Dynamics of Crowds: Escape Strategies

2015

Abstract We adopt an operatorial method, based on creation, annihilation and number operators, to describe one or two populations mutually interacting and moving in a two-dimensional region. In particular, we discuss how the two populations, contained in a certain two-dimensional region with a non-trivial topology, react when some alarm occurs. We consider the cases of both low and high densities of the populations, and discuss what is changing as the strength of the interaction increases. We also analyze what happens when the region has either a single exit or two ways out.

On the equivalence between the Scheduled Relaxation Jacobi method and Richardson's non-stationary method

2017

The Scheduled Relaxation Jacobi (SRJ) method is an extension of the classical Jacobi iterative method to solve linear systems of equations ($Au=b$) associated with elliptic problems. It inherits its robustness and accelerates its convergence rate computing a set of $P$ relaxation factors that result from a minimization problem. In a typical SRJ scheme, the former set of factors is employed in cycles of $M$ consecutive iterations until a prescribed tolerance is reached. We present the analytic form for the optimal set of relaxation factors for the case in which all of them are different, and find that the resulting algorithm is equivalent to a non-stationary generalized Richardson's method. …

Generation of Frames

2004

It is well known that, given a generic frame, there exists a unique frame operator which satisfies, together with its adjoint, a double operator inequality. In this paper we start considering the inverse problem, that is how to associate a frame to certain operators satisfying the same kind of inequality. The main motivation of our analysis is the possibility of using frame theory in the discussion of some aspects of the quantum time evolution, both for open and for closed physical systems.

Quantum waveguides with magnetic fields

2019

International audience; We study generalised quantum waveguides in the presence of moderate and strong external magnetic fields. Applying recent results on the adiabatic limit of the connection Laplacian we show how to construct and compute effective Hamiltonians that allow, in particular, for a detailed spectral analysis of magnetic waveguide Hamiltonians. We apply our general construction to a number of explicit examples, most of which are not covered by previous results.

Correlations between a Hawking particle and its partner in a 1+1D Bose-Einstein condensate analog black hole

2020

The Fourier transform of the density-density correlation function in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) analog black hole is a useful tool to investigate correlations between the Hawking particles and their partners. It can be expressed in terms of $⟨{^{\mathrm{out}}\stackrel{^}{a}}_{\mathrm{up}}^{\mathrm{ext}}\text{ }\text{ }{^{\mathrm{out}}\stackrel{^}{a}}_{\mathrm{up}}^{\mathrm{int}}⟩$, where ${^{\mathrm{out}}\stackrel{^}{a}}_{\mathrm{up}}^{\mathrm{ext}}$ is the annihilation operator for the Hawking particle and ${^{\mathrm{out}}\stackrel{^}{a}}_{\mathrm{up}}^{\mathrm{int}}$ is the corresponding one for the partner. This basic quantity is calculated for three different models for the BEC f…

Angular Momentum Coupling

2007

In nuclear physics, as also in atomic and molecular physics, the entities to be described consist of sub-entities with some orbital angular momentum and spin. The angular momentum of the entity is built, then, of the angular momenta of the sub-entities. This building process leads to quantum-mechanical angular momentum coupling. This chapter presents the basic machinery for treating angular momentum and its coupling. Clebsch-Gordan coefficients and 3j symbols are introduced. It is shown that Clebsch-Gordan coefficients and 3j symbols relate to the coupling of two angular momenta. Increasing the number of angular momenta to be coupled leads to more complicated coupling patterns. Transformati…

Symmetry-induced forces on phase singularities

2010

We show the existence of external forces acting on phase singularities whose origin can be attributed to the presence of short-term discrete-symmetry potentials. These special forces can break highly charged phase singularities into single-charged ones and provide them with non-zero orbital angular momentum even when the potential no longer acts.

Distilling angular momentum nonclassical states in trapped ions

2004

In the spirit of Quantum Non-Demolition Measurements, we show that exploiting suitable vibronic couplings and repeatedly measuring the atomic population of a confined ion, it is possible to distill center of mass vibrational states with well defined square of angular momentum or, alternatively, angular momentum projection Schr\"odinger cat states.
