We critically review the current data on the therapeutic effects and basic biological activities of the natural compound curcumin on various oral diseases: a sound experimental evidence appears to support its possible use against relevant pathologies which include cancer, radiotherapy- and chemotherapy-induced mucositis, lichen planus and periodontitis. This versatility of curcumin depends on its ability of interacting with multiple targets, though inhibition of the transcription factor NF-kB can be identified as one of the principal mechanisms. Background Oral Lichen Planus (OLP) is an inflammatory chronic disease. Modified World Health Organization (WHO) diagnostic criteria (2003) suggest diagnosing OLP both clinically and histologically. Furthermore, it is known the potential of malignant transformation of OLP, especially those affecting mucosa. Abstract: In patients suffering from oral cavity cancer surgical treatment is complex because it is necessary to remove carcinoma and lymph node metastasis (through a radical unilateral or bilateral neck dissection) and to reconstruct the affected area by means of free flaps. The saliva stagnation in the post-operative period is a risk factor with regard to local complications. Minor complications related to saliva stagnation (such as tissue maceration and wound dehiscence) could become major complications compromising the surgery or the reconstructive outcome.
