From “friends” to “patrons”

2009

In this article, we examine a period when Sweden took a leap from a locally-oriented power structure to a more centralised state. This meant a profound social change. We concentrate on the connection between changes in rhetoric and changes in society that took place in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Our point of departure is that, in rhetoric, there occurred a shift in balance from the rhetoric of friendship to the rhetoric of patronage. In the context of Sweden and Finland, we discuss whether this was linked to changes in administration and in the social order as a whole. Were there any real changes behind this rhetorical transition? Our source material provides a glimpse into wh…

Local nearrings with dihedral multiplicative group

2004

AbstractA not necessarily zero-symmetric nearring R with a unit element is called local if the set of all non-invertible elements of R forms a subgroup of the additive group of R. It is proved that every local nearring whose multiplicative group is dihedral is finite and its additive group is either a 3-group of order at most 9 or a 2-group of order at most 32.

Lyapunov Functions for Second-Order Differential Inclusions: A Viability Approach

2001

AbstractIn this paper the existence of Lyapunov functions for second-order differential inclusions is analyzed by using the methodology of the Viability Theory. A necessary assumption on the initial states and sufficient conditions for the existence of local and global Lyapunov functions are obtained. An application is also provided.

Mean-field theory for superconductivity in twisted bilayer graphene

2018

Recent experiments show how a bilayer graphene twisted around a certain magic angle becomes superconducting as it is doped into a region with approximate flat bands. We investigate the mean-field $s$-wave superconducting state in such a system and show how the state evolves as the twist angle is tuned, and as a function of the doping level. We argue that part of the experimental findings could well be understood to result from an attractive electron--electron interaction mediated by electron--phonon coupling, but the flat-band nature of the excitation spectrum makes also superconductivity quite unusual. For example, as the flat-band states are highly localized around certain spots in the st…

Hybrid materials containing organometallic cations and 3-D anionic metal dicyanamide networks of type [Cp*2M][M′(dca)3]

2004

A new series of hybrid materials of type [Cp*2M][M′(dca)3] has been prepared by cation templation and structurally characterised (M = Fe(III), Co(III); M′ = Mn(II), Fe(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cd(II); dca− = N(CN)2−). The crystallographic analysis of [Cp*2Fe][Cd(dca)3] showed that the [Cd(dca)3]− anionic framework is of a symmetrical 3-D α-polonium type, containing octahedral Cd nodes and μ1,5-dca bridging ligands. The [Cp*2Fe]+ cations occupy the cube-like cavities within the framework. The cationic and anionic-framework sublattices remain magnetically independent and display susceptibilities, over the range 300 to 2 K, of a Curie–Weiss nature obtained by adding a S = 1/2 (Cp*2Fe+) or a S = 0 …

Short range charge/orbital ordering in La1−xSrxMn1−zBzO3 (B = Cu,Zn) manganites

2005

We have measured the reflectivity spectra of La1−x SrxMn1−zBzO3 (B = Cu, Zn; 0.17 x 0.30; 0 z 0.10) manganites over wide frequency (100–4000 cm −1 )a nd temperature (80–300 K) ranges. Besides the previously observed infrared active modes or mode pairs at about 160 cm −1 (external mode), 350 cm −1 (bond bending mode) and 590 cm −1 (bond stretching mode), we have clearly observed two additional phonon modes at about 645 and 720 cm −1 below the temperature T1 (T1 < TC), which coincides with the phase transition temperature when the system transforms from ferromagnetic metallic into a ferromagnetic insulator state. This transition is related to the formation of short range charge/orbitally orde…

The fundamental theory of optimal "Anti-Bayesian" parametric pattern classification using order statistics criteria

2013

Author's version of an article in the journal: Pattern Recognition. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.patcog.2012.07.004 The gold standard for a classifier is the condition of optimality attained by the Bayesian classifier. Within a Bayesian paradigm, if we are allowed to compare the testing sample with only a single point in the feature space from each class, the optimal Bayesian strategy would be to achieve this based on the (Mahalanobis) distance from the corresponding means. The reader should observe that, in this context, the mean, in one sense, is the most central point in the respective distribution. In this paper, we shall show that we can obtain opti…

Childhood Verbal Development and Drinking Behaviors from Adolescence to Young Adulthood: A Discordant Twin-Pair Analysis

2012

BACKGROUND: Studies suggest that better cognitive and verbal abilities in childhood predict earlier experimentation with alcohol and higher levels of drinking in adolescence, whereas poorer ability is related to a higher likelihood of remaining abstinent. Whether individual differences in language development in childhood predict differences in adolescent drinking behaviors has not been studied. METHODS: To address that question, we compared co-twins from twin pairs discordant for their childhood language development and studied associations of parental reports of within-pair differences in age at speaking words, age at learning to read, and expressive language skills during school age with…

Family circumstances and survival from childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in West Germany

2015

Little is known about the relationship between family characteristics and survival from childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), which we studied for the first time in German children.ALL cases were diagnosed between 1992 and 1994 and information on family characteristics was collected during a previously conducted nationwide case-control study. Children were followed for 10 years after diagnosis, as few disease-related events occur afterwards. Cox proportional hazards models estimating hazard ratios (HR) were calculated using overall as well as event-free survival methods.Second born children showed statistically significant better survival compared to first or later born children, w…

The DYRK1A gene is a cause of syndromic intellectual disability with severe microcephaly and epilepsy.

2012

Background DYRK1A plays different functions during development, with an important role in controlling brain growth through neuronal proliferation and neurogenesis. It is expressed in a gene dosage dependent manner since dyrk1a haploinsufficiency induces a reduced brain size in mice, and DYRK1A overexpression is the candidate gene for intellectual disability (ID) and microcephaly in Down syndrome. We have identified a 69 kb deletion including the 5′ region of the DYRK1A gene in a patient with growth retardation, primary microcephaly, facial dysmorphism, seizures, ataxic gait, absent speech and ID. Because four patients previously reported with intragenic DYRK1A rearrangements or 21q22 microd…
