On the reconstruction of discontinuous functions using multiquadric RBF–WENO local interpolation techniques
2020
Abstract We discuss several approaches involving the reconstruction of discontinuous one-dimensional functions using parameter-dependent multiquadric radial basis function (MQ-RBF) local interpolants combined with weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) techniques, both in the computation of the locally optimized shape parameter and in the combination of RBF interpolants. We examine the accuracy of the proposed reconstruction techniques in smooth regions and their ability to avoid Gibbs phenomena close to discontinuities. In this paper, we propose a true MQ-RBF–WENO method that does not revert to the classical polynomial WENO approximation near discontinuities, as opposed to what was pr…
Święci rodziny dominikańskiej w oratorstwie Fabiana Birkowskiego
2023
In the times of Fabian Birkowski, OP, the notion of the Dominican Family comprised three forms of community life. They were represented by the preaching friars, cloistered nuns, and lay Dominicans. There were numerous saints and blessed who used to be members of those orders and the memory of them was perpetuated in, among others, the religious oratory of the 17th century. Among the preachers of those days, Father Fabian holds a prominent place as an author of Latin oratories and sermons de sanctis delivered in the Polish language. The fact that a large portion of the speeches dedicated to saints, which he included in the collection Orationes ecclesiasticae, dealt with Dominican saints indi…
Cultural institutions as agents of urban and community regeneration in the (post-)pandemic city. The case of the «Laboratorio Zen Insieme» in Palermo
2022
Although all cities in the world have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, its impacts on the territories, yet to be understood, are unevenly distributed, revealing extremely varied imbalances depending on the places. However, it is clear that the virus and its variants have aggravated pre-existing socio-spatial inequalities, creating new ones and bringing attention back to those implications between space, planning, public health and citizenship that are at the origins of contemporary urbanism. In a reference framework in which the crisis is globalized but unequal and in the absence of a welfare system capable of responding to the urgencies of the most marginalized social contexts and g…
Pricing Policies of Excess Capacity in Make to Order Production Systems
2014
The research concerns a make to order manufacturing environment and two classes of customers who submit orders. The core customers have a contract with the firm at fixed services level (price and due date). The short-term customers submit the orders based on the price set by the firm. In this paper, it is proposed a pricing policy based on fuzzy logic to set the price for the short-term customers. The fuzzy approach captures the state of the manufacturing systems in terms of congestion in order to set the price. The policy proposed is compared to a fixed price, and to a state-dependent policy based on three levels of price. A discrete event simulation environment is used to test the propose…
The taint of torture and the brazilian legal system
2019
In Brazil, the practice of torture intertwines deeply with its own history. The literature on the subject has had a greater intensification on its registers during the Dictatorial Regime (1964 to 1985). In spite of the Brazilian Constitution of 1988, Brazil only makes efforts to investigate the crimes of torture of this period to comply with the provisions of the United Nations in 2011. Within this scenario, the NationalTruth Commission (Law 12.528, of November 2011) was created with the purpose of clarifying the facts and circumstances of cases concerning human rights violations, as well as the Law on Access to Information (Law 12.527 of November 2011), which have regulated the constitutio…

Strain gradient elasticity within the symmetric BEM formulation
2014
The symmetric Galerkin Boundary Element Method is used to address a class of strain gradient elastic materials featured by a free energy function of the (classical) strain and of its (first) gradient. With respect to the classical elasticity, additional response variables intervene, such as the normal derivative of the displacements on the boundary, and the work-coniugate double tractions. The fundamental solutions - featuring a fourth order partial differential equations (PDEs) system - exhibit singularities which in 2D may be of the order 1/ r 4 . New techniques are developed, which allow the elimination of most of the latter singularities. The present paper has to be intended as a resear…
Fixed point results under generalized c-distance with application to nonlinear fourth-order differential equation
2019
We consider the notion of generalized c-distance in the setting of ordered cone b-metric spaces and obtain some new fixed point results. Our results provide a more general statement, under which can be unified some theorems of the existing literature. In particular, we refer to the results of Sintunavarat et al. [W. Sintunavarat, Y.J. Cho, P. Kumam, Common fixed point theorems for c-distance in ordered cone metric spaces, Comput. Math. Appl. 62 (2011) 1969-1978]. Some examples and an application to nonlinear fourth-order differential equation are given to support the theory.
Study of dimuon production in photon-photon collisions and measurement of QED photon structure functions at LEP
2001
Muon pair production in the process e+e- -> e+e-mu+mu- is studied using the data taken at LEP1 (sqrt(s) \simeq m_Z) with the DELPHI detector during the years 1992-1995. The corresponding integrated luminosity is 138.5 pb^{-1}. The QED predictions have been tested over the whole Q^2 range accessible at LEP1 (from several GeV^2/c^4 to several hundred GeV^2/c^4) by comparing experimental distributions with distributions resulting from Monte Carlo simulations using various generators. Selected events are used to extract the leptonic photon structure function F_2^\gamma. Azimuthal correlations are used to obtain information on additional structure functions, F_A^\gamma and F_B^\gamma, which orig…
Measurement of the ZZ cross-section in e(+)e(-) interactions at 183-189 GeV
2001
Measurements of on-shell ZZ production are described, using data collected by DELPHI in 1997 and 1998, at centre-of-mass energies sqrt(s) = 182.6 GeV and 188.6 GeV respectively. Results obtained in each of the final states q qbar q qbar, mu+mu- q qbar, e+e- q qbar, nu nubar q qbar, l+l-l+l-, and nu nubar l+l- are presented. The measured cross-sections for on-shell ZZ production via the tree-level doubly-resonant graphs (NC02) are: sigma_{NC02}(182.6 GeV) = 0.38 +- 0.18 (stat) +- 0.04 (syst) pb, sigma_{NC02}(188.6 GeV) = 0.60 +- 0.13 (stat) +- 0.07 (syst) pb. They are consistent with the Standard Model expectations of 0.25 pb and 0.65 pb at each energy.
