Generalized Entropies, Variance and Applications

2020

The generalized cumulative residual entropy is a recently defined dispersion measure. In this paper, we obtain some further results for such a measure, in relation to the generalized cumulative residual entropy and the variance of random lifetimes. We show that it has an intimate connection with the non-homogeneous Poisson process. We also get new expressions, bounds and stochastic comparisons involving such measures. Moreover, the dynamic version of the mentioned notions is studied through the residual lifetimes and suitable aging notions. In this framework we achieve some findings of interest in reliability theory, such as a characterization for the exponential distribution, various resul…

Here we investigate the connection between topological order and the geometric entanglement, as measured by the logarithm of the overlap between a given state and its closest product state of blocks. We do this for a variety of topologically-ordered systems such as the toric code, double semion, color code, and quantum double models. As happens for the entanglement entropy, we find that for sufficiently large block sizes the geometric entanglement is, up to possible sub-leading corrections, the sum of two contributions: a bulk contribution obeying a boundary law times the number of blocks, and a contribution quantifying the underlying pattern of long-range entanglement of the topologically-…

Hybris e rivoluzione. Il caso della rivolta cilena

2023

This paper discusses the binomial hybris and revolution. In particular, the question of whether the excessive dominants’ arrogance, who have too much both in material and symbolic terms, is sufficient to explain the deflagration of an insurgency and the interruption of a legal order. The question will be addressed by interweaving the reflections of authors who have discussed this topic with a material collected by the author through a legal-political ethnography conducted in Chile during the revolt that broke out in October 2019 and led to a new constituent phase. Categories and definitions used in this text are partly borrowed from the course devoted to political change and revolution taug…

Afternotes on PHM: Harmonic ENO Methods

2003

PHM methods have been used successfully as reconstruction procedures to design high-order Riemann solvers for nonlinear scalar and systems of conservation laws, (see [8], [1], [4]). We introduce a new class of polynomial reconstruction procedures based on the harmonic mean of the absolute values of finite diferences used as difference-limiter, following the original idea used before to design the piecewise hyperbolic method, introduced in [8]. We call those methods ’harmonic ENO methods’, (HENO). Furthermore, we give analytical and numerical evidence of the good behavior of these methods used as reconstruction procedures for the numerical approximation by means of shock-capturing methods fo…

The role of information and communication technologies and logistics organization in the economic performance of Sicilian fruit and vegetable enterpr…

2013

Through a direct survey conducted on a sample of firms operating in the Sicilian fruit and vegetable sector, the present study provides an empirical evidence on the degree of diffusion of ICTs as well as on relationships with the regional distribution system. To pursue this goal, a multiple regression analysis model was implemented to identify which factors affect more the economic results of fruit and vegetable enterprises. The main results of the analysis indicate that firms using specific software for accounting, warehousing, payment and sales orders and contracts, are more likely to obtain higher economic performances under the “coeteris paribus” condition, as well as firms which are eq…

"Waiting for Godot?" : Lithuania and the European Security Order in the 21-century

2000

1999 m. Kosovo kampanija privertė peržiūrėti tarptautinio saugumo sampratą, Europos Są…

Snowball ICA: A Model Order Free Independent Component Analysis Strategy for Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Data

2020

In independent component analysis (ICA), the selection of model order (i.e., number of components to be extracted) has crucial effects on functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) brain network analysis. Model order selection (MOS) algorithms have been used to determine the number of estimated components. However, simulations show that even when the model order equals the number of simulated signal sources, traditional ICA algorithms may misestimate the spatial maps of the signal sources. In principle, increasing model order will consider more potential information in the estimation, and should therefore produce more accurate results. However, this strategy may not work for fMRI because …

The PCHIP subdivision scheme

2016

In this paper we propose and analyze a nonlinear subdivision scheme based on the monotononicity-preserving third order Hermite-type interpolatory technique implemented in the PCHIP package in Matlab. We prove the convergence and the stability of the PCHIP nonlinear subdivision process by employing a novel technique based on the study of the generalized Jacobian of the first difference scheme. Coordination versatility of 1,5-bis(salicylidene)carbohydrazide in Ni(II) complexes

2014

Abstract Versatile coordination behavior of a polydentate Schiff base ligand 1,5-bis(salicylidene)carbohydrazide (H3bsc) has been explored in Ni(II) complexes. [Ni(H3bsc)2](ClO4)2 (1)·H2O·3CH3CN is a bis chelate mononuclear complex of H3bsc in keto form, and [Ni4(H0.5bsc)2(O2CCMe3)3(CH3OH)4](2)·2H2O·2CH3OH is a tetranuclear complex of H3bsc with an unusual coordination. In 2, one phenolate group of the ligand coordinates in a monodentate way and the other coordinates in a μ2-bridging mode to the Ni(II) center. This unusual coordination mode of the ligand stabilizes the Ni(II) complex in a tetranuclear form where the carbonyl oxygen of the ligand exists in between keto and enol form of bond …
