A topological model for Oersted-Ampre's law

1973

A geometrical description of Oersted-Ampere's law ∮H ds=(4π/c)I can be given in terms of an appropriate topological manifold. More precisely: It will be shown that Oersted-Ampere's law can be related to the topological invariantH 1(S 1), i.e. de Rham's first cohomology group on the differentiable manifoldS 1={(x,y) ∈ ℝ2∶x 2+y 2}

Kinetic parameter determination in monoculture and monosubstrate biological reactors

1982

The kinetic parameters of a biological reactor, operating under monoculture and monosubstrate conditions, have been determined. Pure cultures of Nocardia corallina and Pseudomonas fluorescens species have been used with phenol as the only organic carbon source. The experimental runs have been carried out both in a batch and in a continuous stirred reactor. The batch results have been interpreted by zero order kinetics in phenol and first order kinetics in biomass. The kinetic-constants have also been calculated. The activation energy has been determined only for the Nocardia species. Using this strain, the continuous reactor, working without biomass recycle, has confirmed the first order ki…

Trace-element partitioning between amphibole and silicate melt.

2007

Knowledge of the partitioning behavior of trace elements between solid and liquid is a prerequisite for modern igneous and mantle petrology. Most of the mathematical models simulating melt generation, migration and evolution within the mantle and/or the crust require the availability of reliable solid/liquid partition coefficients for the mineral phases involved in the process. Calcic amphiboles are extremely important for the understanding of lithospheric processes because of both their common occurrence in a variety of igneous and metamorphic rocks types and their capability of hosting a large number of geochemically important trace elements. A series of studies on the partitioning behavi…

Ultimate Order Statistics-Based Prototype Reduction Schemes

2013

Published version of a chapter in the book: AI 2013: Advances in Artificial Intelligence. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-319-03680-9_42 The objective of Prototype Reduction Schemes (PRSs) and Border Identification (BI) algorithms is to reduce the number of training vectors, while simultaneously attempting to guarantee that the classifier built on the reduced design set performs as well, or nearly as well, as the classifier built on the original design set. In this paper, we shall push the limit on the field of PRSs to see if we can obtain a classification accuracy comparable to the optimal, by condensing the information in the data set into a single tr…

The Problem of Time Arrow in Financial Time Series

According to the efficient market hypothesis, future movements of the market cannot be predicted. This introduces an intrinsic time asymmetry of the financial time series as there are no laws forbidding “predicting” past based on the current market fluctuations. This clear time asymmetry in the basic laws of finance raises a question which we shall be referring to as the problem of time arrow: are there any noticeable statistical differences between forward-in-time and reverse-in-time market data. Majority of the statistical methods used for financial time series are time-symmetric and hence, not usable for our purposes. The first method used in our study is the analysis of the length-distr…

« Mouvement est nécessité » Pour une relation au monde du mouvement et de la musique

2021

Starting from a stationary state in order to feed a process, the idea of movement in music can affect both the sound material and the listening (the Hoerspiel...), both the view (musical theater) and the ancillary disciplines (dance or maping-video)... Based on examples taken in the 20th and 21st centuries (Debussy, Berg, Webern, Stravinsky, Stockhausen, Kagel, Ferrari, La Monte Young, Xenakis, Adams, De Chizy, De Mey, Trapani?), musicological study ultimately deduces that the metaphor of movement is for man an experience considered fundamental to his particular relationship to the world.

Le solo imprévu : l?atelier d?improvisation comme lieu d?échanges entre cultures d?audition

2021

Starting from sociologist Anne-Marie Green?s idea of ?common space?, and from Hans Robert Hauss? reception theory, the improvisation workshop is thought to be a way of transforming the practices of reception, in order to modify the nature of the culture of listening of each listener. Four research axis are, then, proposed, from the validation of the personal experience of the participants to the reception of the instant?s surprise as a factor of education, including the research of communicational tools specific to reception of music, capable of captivating the listeners with the original aspects of the unknown musical territories.

Stretched fibre based dispersion compensating module for ultra high-speed telecommunication systems

2008

International audience; In this work, the potential efficiency of a low-loss, tunable second-and third-order dispersion compensating module based on a stretched optical fibre for ultra high-speed telecommunication systems is analysed. Experimental results at a repetition rate of 640 GHz show that precise dispersion compensation could be achieved in the range of +0.038 ps/nm by means of an 11.3 cm maximum stretching of a 48 m long dispersion compensating.
