Streamwater responses to reduced nitrogen deposition at four small upland catchments in Norway

AbstractReduced emissions of nitrogen (N) in Europe have resulted in decreasing atmospheric deposition since 1990. Long-term data (1988–2017) from four small Norwegian catchments located along gradients in N deposition, rainfall, and organic carbon (C) show different responses to 25–30% reductions in N deposition during the same period. At three sites the decreased N deposition caused reduced leaching of nitrate to surface water, whereas the westernmost site showed no decrease, probably due to thin soils with low C:N ratio, poor vegetation cover and high precipitation. A sensitive and fast method for direct determinations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in bulk samples and in chromatographically separated fractions by inductively coupled plasma isotope dilution mass spectrometry (ICP−IDMS) is developed. A 13C-enriched spike solution of benzoic acid is used for the isotope dilution step. Equal ionization efficiencies are obtained for carbon, independent of the type and molecular weight of the dissolved organic substance, which is the most important precondition for DOC determinations by ICP−IDMS. Sampling of the central region of the North Sea was carried out to study the spatial and seasonal changes of dissolved and particulate organic C (DOC and POC, respectively). The surface waters were collected during four cruises over a year (Autumn 2004–Summer 2005). DOC and POC concentrations were measured using high temperature catalytic oxidation methods. The surface water concentrations of DOC and POC were spatially and temporally variable. There were significantly different concentrations of DOC and POC between the inshore and offshore waters in winter and summer only, with no clear trend in autumn and spring. AbstractWe used data from whole-lake studies to assess how changes in food quantity (phytoplankton biomass) and quality (phytoplankton community composition, seston C:P and N:P) with N fertilization affect zooplankton biomass, community composition and C:N:P stoichiometry, and their N:P recycling ratio along a gradient in lake DOC concentrations. This study investigated the treatment of a shipboard slop containing commercial gasoline in a pilot plant scale consisting of a membrane biological reactor (MBR) and photocatalytic reactor (PCR) acting in series. The MBR contributed for approximately 70% to the overall slop purification. Simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) together with organic removal in granules is usually carried out without Dissolved Oxygen (DO) concentration control, at ‘‘low DO’’ (with a DO 7–8 mg/L, during feast and famine conditions respectively). Abstract We introduced superoxide as potassium superoxide (KO2) to artificial lake water containing dissolved organic matter (DOM) without or with introduced ferric iron complexes (DOM-Fe(III)), and monitored the production rate of hydroxyl radicals as well as changes in the absorption and fluorescence properties of DOM. The introduction of KO2 decreased the absorption by DOM but increased the spectral slope coefficient of DOM more with complexed ferric Fe than without it. The introduction of KO2 increased the fluorescence of humic-like components in DOM without introduced ferric Fe but resulted in the loss of fluorescence in DOM with introduced ferric Fe.
