Osteoporotic Pelvic Fractures

2018

Background The estimated incidence of osteoporotic pelvic fractures among persons over age 60 in Germany is 224 per 100 000 persons per year, and rising. A number of surgical treatment options are available, but clinical long-term data are lacking. Methods This review is based on pertinent publications and guidelines retrieved by a selective literature search, and on the authors' clinical experience. Results Patients often report one or more relatively trivial traumatic incidents leading up to the fracture. They complain of pain in the hip, groin, or lower lumbar region, or of low back pain and sciatica. A new classification scheme entitled Fragility Fractures of the Pelvis (FFP) takes the …

Composite Coatings of Chitosan and Silver Nanoparticles Obtained by Galvanic Deposition for Orthopedic Implants

2022

In this work, composite coatings of chitosan and silver nanoparticles were presented as an antibacterial coating for orthopedic implants. Coatings were deposited on AISI 304L using the galvanic deposition method. In galvanic deposition, the difference of the electrochemical redox potential between two metals (the substrate and a sacrificial anode) has the pivotal role in the process. In the coupling of these two metals a spontaneous redox reaction occurs and thus no external power supply is necessary. Using this process, a uniform deposition on the exposed area and a good adherence of the composite coating on the metallic substrate were achieved. Physical-chemical characterizations were car…

Hydroxyapatite/Chitosan/Collagen coatings through galvanic coupling

In this work, the attention was focused on Hydroxyapatite/ Chitosan/Collagen composite as biocoatings for application in orthopaedic devices. Hydroxyapatite was selected for its osteoconductivity due to its chemical structure similar to bones. Collagen has the same function since 90-95% of bone matrix is constituted of collagen fibers. Furthermore, chitosan are largely used yet in medical field (e.g. antibacterial agent or drug deliver) and in this work were used to create a synergic interaction with hydroxyapatite and collagen to increase the strength and bioactivity of coating. Coatings were fabricated by galvanic deposition process that has different advantages an it does not require ext…

CHRONIC INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASES IN PATIENTS WITH ORTHOPEDIC MANIFESTATION. COMPARISON WITH THE DATA REPORTED IN INTERNATIONAL LITERATURE

2012

In Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) the suspected etiological cause is a dysregulation of the intestinal immune system, in which it is possible to determine a cross-like immune reactivity against the resident microbiota; this mechanism explains the exsistence of Lesnioski-Chron's disease, a variant of IBD in which patients manifest osteoarticular problems that may also be the primary manifestation of the disease. The aim of this study was to compare some cases encountered by our research group at the University of Palermo with others reported in international literature on osteoarticular manifestations in IDB.

Treatment algorithm for spontaneous spinal infections: A review of the literature

2019

Background: Primary spinal infections are rare pathologies with an estimated incidence of 5% of all osteomyelitis. The diagnosis can be challenging and this might result in a late identification. The etiological diagnosis is the primary concern to determine the most appropriate treatment. The aim of this review article was to identify the importance of a methodological attitude toward accurate and prompt diagnosis using an algorithm to aid on spinal infection management. Methods: A search was done on spinal infection in some databases including PubMed, ISI Web of Knowledge, Google Scholar, Ebsco, Embasco, and Scopus. Results: Literature reveals that on the basis of a clinical suspicion, the…

Does the addition of single joint exercises to a resistance training program improve changes in performance and anthropometric measures in untrained …

2018

The present study compared changes in muscle performance and anthropometric measures in young men performing resistance training (RT) programs composed of only multi joint (MJ) exercises, or with the addition of single joint (SJ) exercises (MJ+SJ). Twenty untrained men were randomized to MJ or MJ+SJ groups for 8 weeks. Both groups performed the same MJ exercises. The difference was that the MJ+SJ group added SJ exercises for upper and lower limbs. Participants were tested for 10 repetitions maximum (10RM), flexed arm circumference, and biceps and triceps skinfolds. Both groups significantly increased 10RM load for the bench press (MJ 38.5%, MJ+SJ 40.1%), elbow extension (MJ 28.7%, MJ+SJ 31.…

Failure Analysis of a Humeral Shaft Locking Compression Plate—Surface Investigation and Simulation by Finite Element Method

2019

A case study of a failed humeral shaft locking compression plate is presented, starting with a clinical case where failure occurred and an implant replacement was required. This study uses finite element method (FEM) in order to determine the failure modes for the clinical case. Four loading scenarios that simulate daily life activities were considered for determining the stress distribution in a humeral shaft locking compression plate (LCP). Referring to the simulation results, the failure analysis was performed on the explant. Using fracture surface investigation methods, stereomicroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), a mixed mode failure was determined. An initial fatigue failu…
