Skin temperature in youth soccer players with functional equinus and non-equinus condition after running.
2018
Objectives To check how a thermal IR camera can check skin temperature in gastrocnemius‐soleus equinus condition and non‐gastrocnemius‐soleus condition in youth soccer players and thus detect association between the extensibility of the triceps surae (with gastrocnemius‐soleus equinus and non‐gastrocnemius‐soleus equinus) and the muscle temperature pattern. Design A cross‐sectional study secondary level of care. Methods Sample from an elite soccer academy in Madrid (Spain) 35 healthy male subjects (youth soccer players) age 12.82 ± 1.07 years, height 158.68 ± 10.79 cm, weight 49.19 ± 9.45 kg, body mass index 19.41 ± 2.25. The exclusion criteria were the presence of musculoskeletal and joint…
Clinical application of back surface topography by means of structured light in the screening of idiopathic scoliosis
2016
We present the results of the clinical validity in the screening of idiopathic scoliosis with a nonharming method of back surface topography by means of structured light projection. A total of 155 patients were evaluated (mean age 13.3 years). They were divided into two groups: pathologic patients (scoliosis) and nonpathologic patients (control and asymmetries). An analytical case-control study was carried out. Our topographic method obtained 92% sensitivity and 74% specificity as a screening test in identifying patients with scoliosis (P=0.05). We could quantify the vertebral deformity of scoliosis in the three spatial planes by means of three topographic variables, Horizontal Plane Deform…
Quantification of topographic changes in the surface of back of young patients monitored for idiopathic scoliosis: correlation with radiographic vari…
2016
Idiopathic scoliosis requires a close follow-up while the patient is skeletally immature to detect early progression. Patients who are monitored by radiographs are exposed to high doses of ionizing radiation. The purpose of this study is to evaluate if an optic noninvasive method of back surface topography based on structured light would be clinically useful in the follow-up of young patients with idiopathic scoliosis. This could reduce the number of radiographs made on these children. Thirty-one patients with idiopathic scoliosis were submitted twice to radiograph and our topographic method at intervals of 6 months to 1 year. Three topographical variables were applied horizontal plane defo…
Monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance and bone health outcomes: a systematic review and exploratory meta-analysis.
2017
Monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) is a common condition in the elderly. A number of studies have investigated the relationship between MGUS and bone health outcomes including bone mineral density (BMD), osteoporosis and fractures, but no meta-analysis exists. We conducted a systematic review and exploratory meta-analysis comparing bone health outcomes in patients with MGUS. Two independent authors searched PubMed and Scopus from inception until 19 October 2016. A meta-analysis of cross-sectional and longitudinal studies investigating fractures and BMD was conducted. Standardised mean differences (SMD) ± 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated for BMD, and risk…
A Randomized Controlled Trial Assessing the Evolution of the Weight-Bearing Ankle Dorsiflexion Range of Motion Over 6 Sessions of Talus Mobilizations…
2020
Abstract Background Ankle range of motion declines with age, affecting mobility and postural control. Objective The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of a talus mobilization-based intervention among healthy community-dwelling older adults presenting with limited weight-bearing ankle dorsiflexion range of motion and determine how ankle mobility evolved over the treatment. Design This was a randomized clinical trial. Setting This study was conducted in an outpatient clinic. Participants Community-dwelling, older adults over 60 years of age who had limited ankle mobility participated in this study. Interventions The experimental intervention consisted of 6 sessions of manu…
The role of muscular trauma in the development of heterotopic ossification after hip surgery: An animal-model study in rats.
2015
Abstract Background Heterotopic ossification (HO), the formation of bone in soft tissues, is a frequent complication after surgery of the hip and the pelvis. Although the pathophysiological entities responsible for the formation of HO remain largely unclear, muscle trauma is alleged to play a central role in the pathogenic mechanisms underlying HO. However, for this observation, made by many surgeons for decades, no objective evidence has been provided yet. Methods Fifty male Wistar rats were subjected to surgery of the right hip. The femoral canal was reamed in three steps up to 2 mm. Animals formed 2 groups: in group 1 (25 animals) every effort was taken not to injure the muscles. In cont…
Low Back Pain in Young Basketball and Floorball Players
2015
Objective The aim of the study was to investigate the prevalence and risk factors of low back pain (LBP) in young female and male basketball and floorball players. Design Cross-sectional study. Setting Nine basketball teams and 9 floorball teams from Tampere city district, Finland. Participants Four hundred one young female and male players (mean age: 15.8 ± 1.9 years). Assessment of risk factors Age, gender, sport, and family history of musculoskeletal disorders were assessed as risk factors for LBP. Adjustment was made on team level to avoid random effects associated with a team. Main outcome measures Information of players' background factors and LBP episodes was collected by a structure…
Progress of instability in fragility fractures of the pelvis: An observational study.
2019
Abstract Fragility fractures of the pelvis (FFP) are an increasing entity among elderly persons. Characteristics are different from high-energy pelvic trauma. Little is known about the natural course of FFP in conservative and after operative treatment. Materials and methods Medical charts and radiologic data of 148 patients with an FFP, who were admitted in a 3-year period, were analysed retrospectively. Incidence and characteristics of fracture progression (FP) were noted. Results Patients presenting early after a traumatic event had more often non-displaced fractures, fractures with lower FFP Type classification and were more frequently treated conservatively. FP was observed in 21 cases…
Immediate effects of shoes inducing ankle-destabilization around Henke's axis during challenging walking gaits: Gait kinematics and peroneal muscles …
2017
International audience; Due to its high frequency of occurrence, as well as possible residual symptoms, proper treatment of lateral ankle sprains (LAS) is important. From a physiological point of view, increasing the quantity of electromyographic (EMG) activity in the peroneal muscles will mechanically improve the functional stability of the ankle joint. The present study investigated the immediate effects of an ankle destabilization device (ADD) specifically designed to induce imbalances along the Henke’s axis during 3 challenging walking tasks. As the effects of such a device have to be tested on healthy participants before being implemented in rehabilitation programs, 12 healthy particip…
Minimal important change and minimum clinically important difference values of the KOOS-12 after total knee arthroplasty
2021
Abstract Purpose The minimal important change (minimal amount of change vs. baseline that a patient recognizes as a clinical change) and minimum clinically important difference (smallest difference between two measurements that are deemed important by patients) are important values to evaluate the clinical relevance of changes over time and differences between groups. This study aims to establish these values for the KOOS-12 at 1 year postoperatively. Methods KOOS-12 scores were calculated from the full-length KOOS completed by patients undergoing primary TKA preoperatively and at 1 year follow up. Minimal important change (MIC) values were estimated using the anchor-based predictive modeli…
