Identification and climatology of cut-off lows near the tropopause.

2008

Cut-off low pressure systems (COLs) are defined as closed lows in the upper troposphere that have become completely detached from the main westerly current. These slow-moving systems often affect the weather conditions at the earth's surface and also work as a mechanism of mass transfer between the stratosphere and the troposphere, playing a significant role in the net flow of tropospheric ozone. In the first part of this work we provide a comprehensive summary of results obtained in previous studies of COLs. Following this, we present three long-term climatologies of COLs. The first two climatologies are based on the conceptual model of a COL, using European Centre for Medium-range Weather…

Validación de los datos de radiación solar UV del Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) a partir de medidas con base en tierra en la costa mediterránea

2016

<p align="justify">The erythemal UV daily dose (EDD) and the local noon UV Index (UVI) obtained from the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI), on board NASA’s Aura satellite, have been validated for the period 2005-2013 using ground based measurements at 5 different sites in the Mediterranean coast: Murcia, Valencia, Palma de Mallorca, Barcelona and Rome (where only measurements of the local noon UVI were available). Ground based measurements were made using YES UVB-1 radiometers in Murcia, Valencia, Palma de Mallorca and Barcelona, and a Brewer MKIV 067 spectrophotometer in Rome. The results of the validation showed good agreement between the satellite instrument and the ground based me…

Assessing environmental performance trends in the transport industry: Eco-innovation or catching-up?

2015

Abstract This paper analyses the change in environmental performance that took place in the transport industry of 38 countries between the years 1995 and 2009. Data Envelopment Analysis techniques and directional distance functions are employed to compute Luenberger productivity indicators for the change in environmental performance and its determinants, namely, environmental technical change resulting from eco-innovation and catching-up with best available environmental technologies. Eight air pollutants account for the environmental contaminants from transport activities, and these are aggregated into three main categories of environmental pressures, namely, global warming, tropospheric o…

Water Depollution by Advanced Oxidation Technologies

2020

This chapter deals with water treatments by advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) based on chemical and photochemical reactions. The most used processes are described, and for each of them, the main reaction mechanisms, principles, advantages, drawbacks, performances and formation of by-products, coupled with technologies and their applications to waters and wastewater depollution, have been analysed, supporting the main results of studies published in the pertinent literature.

The influence of ozone and aerosols on the experimental values of UV erythemal radiation at ground level in Valencia

2009

Ultraviolet erythemal radiation (UVER) values have been simulated for different values of column ozone and aerosol optical depth (AOD) using a multiple scattering model: SBDART. The results show that UVER decreased when atmospheric ozone and aerosols increased, with the ozone having greater influence than AOD. To quantify these dependencies the influence of aerosols on the simulated values of UVER has been analysed for different ozone values. This dependence was linear. Similarly, to quantify the influence of ozone on the UVER values this was simulated for fixed values of AOD while varying the column ozone. The expression of this dependence was found to be a second-order polynomial. We also…

On the attribution of contributions of atmospheric trace gases to emissions in atmospheric model applications

2010

Abstract. We present an improved tagging method, which describes the combined effect of emissions of various species from individual emission categories, e.g. the impact of both, nitrogen oxides and non-methane hydrocarbon emissions on ozone. This method is applied to two simplified chemistry schemes, which represent the main characteristics of atmospheric ozone chemistry. Analytical solutions are presented for this tagging approach. In the past, besides tagging approaches, sensitivity methods were used, which estimate the contributions from individual sources based on differences in two simulations, a base case and a simulation with a perturbation in the respective emission category. We ap…

Efficacy of ozonized water for the treatment of erosive oral lichen planus : a randomized controlled study

2020

Background Management of erosive Oral Lichen Planus (eOLP) is challenging. Currently, topical corticosteroids are widely used as first-line therapy, but they might be associated with side-effects and incomplete clinical response. Among non-pharmacological strategies, ozone at low medical concentration has proven to induce a mild activation of protective anti-oxidant pathways, thus exerting therapeutic effects in many inflammatory diseases. The aim of this randomized controlled study was to investigate the effectiveness of ozonized water in association with conventional topical corticosteroids for the treatment of eOLP. Material and Methods Fifty-one patients were included in the study and r…

Stratospheric sulfur and its implications for radiative forcing simulated by the chemistry climate model EMAC

2015

Multiyear simulations with the atmospheric chemistry general circulation model EMAC with a microphysical modal aerosol module at high vertical resolution demonstrate that the sulfur gases COS and SO2, the latter from low-latitude and midlatitude volcanic eruptions, predominantly control the formation of stratospheric aerosol. Marine dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and other SO2 sources, including strong anthropogenic emissions in China, are found to play a minor role except in the lowermost stratosphere. Estimates of volcanic SO2 emissions are based on satellite observations using Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer and Ozone Monitoring Instrument for total injected mass and Michelson Interferometer fo…

Improvement of the Valencia region ultraviolet index (UVI) forecasting system

2012

The CEAM Foundation (Valencia, Spain) has developed an operational ultraviolet index (UVI) forecasting system based on the Santa Barbara DISORT Atmospheric Radiative Transfer (SBDART) model. The main objective of this system is to provide the general public with a tool to minimize the impact of ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which can cause important human health problems. The system presented in this paper has been developed in collaboration with the Environment Department of the Regional Government of Valencia, and it replaces the one running until 2007. The new system substitutes the previously used Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) observed data with the total ozone column data forecasted …

Stratosphere-troposphere exchange in the vicinity of a tropopause fold

2016

Abstract. Transport of air masses from the stratosphere to the troposphere along tropopause folds can lead to peaked ozone concentrations at ground level and hereby influence the long-term trend of tropospheric ozone. To improve the understanding of responsible processes and preferred regions of exchange, transient and reversible exchange processes in the vicinity of a tropopause fold are analysed on the basis of a case study. The global and regional atmospheric chemistry model system MECO(n), which couples the limited-area atmospheric chemistry and climate model COSMO-CLM/MESSy to the global model ECHAM5/MESSy for Atmospheric Chemistry (EMAC) is applied. Using similar process parametrisati…
