Developments in RGB photoelasticity
2006
In this paper the combined use of both RGB and phase stepping photoelasticity is proposed. The method is characterised by the following features: maximum measurable order greater than that of the RGB method, ability to determine the total fringe order without necessity of unwrapping.
Phase shifting photoelasticity in white light
2007
The availability of image acquisition systems has led to the development of digital photoelasticity both in monochromatic and white light. In particular white light has been used mainly with the following methods: Spectral Content Analysis, RGB photoelasticity and phase shifting photoelasticity. Phase shifting photoelasticity in the colour domain has been used effectively for the determination of the isoclinic parameter in order to reduce the influence of the isochromatic fringes. The method has been also proposed for the determination of the isochromatic fringe order. This paper concerns the general characteristics of phase shifting photoelasticity in the colour domain. Special attention i…
A critical assessment of automatic photoelastic methods for the analysis of edge residual stresses in glass
2014
The measurement of residual stresses is of great importance in the glass industry. The analysis of residual stresses in the glass is usually carried out by photoelastic methods since the glass is a photoelastic material. This article considers the determination of membrane residual stresses of glass plates by digital photoelasticity. In particular, it presents a critical assessment concerning the automated methods based on gray-field polariscope, spectral content analysis, phase shifting, RGB photoelasticity, “test fringes” methods and “tint plate” method. These methods can effectively automate manual methods currently specified in some standards.
Full- and Reduced-order Model of Hydraulic Cylinder for Motion Control
2017
This paper describes the full- and reduced-order models of an actuated hydraulic cylinder suitable for system dynamics analysis and motion control design. The full-order model incorporates the valve spool dynamics with combined dead-zone and saturation nonlinearities - inherent for the orifice flow. It includes the continuity equations of hydraulic circuits coupled with the dynamics of mechanical part of cylinder drive. The resulted model is the fifth-order and nonlinear in states. The reduced model neglects the fast valve spool dynamics, simplifies both the orifice and continuity equations through an aggregation, and considers the cylinder rod velocity as output of interest. The reduced mo…
Analytic solutions and Singularity formation for the Peakon b--Family equations
2012
This paper deals with the well-posedness of the b-family equation in analytic function spaces. Using the Abstract Cauchy-Kowalewski theorem we prove that the b-family equation admits, locally in time, a unique analytic solution. Moreover, if the initial data is real analytic and it belongs to H s with s>3/2, and the momentum density u 0-u 0, xx does not change sign, we prove that the solution stays analytic globally in time, for b≥1. Using pseudospectral numerical methods, we study, also, the singularity formation for the b-family equations with the singularity tracking method. This method allows us to follow the process of the singularity formation in the complex plane as the singularity a…
On the Coronal Temperature in Solar Microflares
2020
We present a study of solar imaging and spectral observations of a microflare, focusing on the temperature diagnostics provided by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) on board the Solar Dynamics Observatory, and the Extreme-Ultraviolet Imaging Spectrometer (EIS) on board Hinode. Our data analysis, in particular from the emission in the 131 and 94 Å channels, indicates that the heated plasma reaches temperatures of ≿10 MK, at odds with a previous analysis of the same event, and we discuss the reason for the discrepancy. A particularly interesting aspect is the likely presence of the Fe XXIII 263.76 Å line, though weak, in EIS spectra in the early phases of the event, supporting the presen…
CIT 6: The Early Phase of PPN?
2001
Photometric and spectroscopic studies for one of the early phase candidate for proto-planetary nebulae, the dust enshrouded extreme carbon star CIT 6, are presented.
NEW DEVELOPMENTS ON INVERSE POLYGON MAPPING TO CALCULATE GRAVITATIONAL LENSING MAGNIFICATION MAPS: OPTIMIZED COMPUTATIONS
2011
We derive an exact solution (in the form of a series expansion) to compute gravitational lensing magnification maps. It is based on the backward gravitational lens mapping of a partition of the image plane in polygonal cells (inverse polygon mapping, IPM), not including critical points (except perhaps at the cell boundaries). The zeroth-order term of the series expansion leads to the method described by Mediavilla et al. The first-order term is used to study the error induced by the truncation of the series at zeroth order, explaining the high accuracy of the IPM even at this low order of approximation. Interpreting the Inverse Ray Shooting (IRS) method in terms of IPM, we explain the previ…
Phenomenology of current-skyrmion interactions in thin films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy
2014
We study skyrmions in magnetic thin films with structural inversion asymmetry perpendicular to the film plane. We determine the magnetization texture of a single skyrmion and its dependence on the strength of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction relative to the magnetostatic energy. Furthermore, we construct a phenomenological model that describes the interaction between the motion of skyrmions and electric currents to lowest order in spin-orbit coupling. We estimate the experimental verifiable velocities for current-driven motion of skyrmion textures based on available results obtained from domain walls dynamics.
PECULIAR TRANSVERSE VELOCITIES OF GALAXIES FROM QUASAR MICROLENSING. TENTATIVE ESTIMATE OF THE PECULIAR VELOCITY DISPERSION ATZ∼ 0.5
2016
We propose to use the flux variability of lensed quasar images induced by gravitational microlensing to measure the transverse peculiar velocity of lens galaxies over a wide range of redshift. Microlensing variability is caused by the motions of the observer, the lens galaxy (including the motion of the stars within the galaxy), and the source; hence, its frequency is directly related to the galaxy's transverse peculiar velocity. The idea is to count time-event rates (e.g., peak or caustic crossing rates) in the observed microlensing light curves of lensed quasars that can be compared with model predictions for different values of the transverse peculiar velocity. To compensate for the larg…
