Yersiniaspp. in Wild Rodents and Shrews in Finland

2017

Yersinia enterocolitica and Yersinia pseudotuberculosis are important zoonotic bacteria causing human enteric yersiniosis commonly reported in Europe. All Y. pseudotuberculosis strains are considered pathogenic, while Y. enterocolitica include both pathogenic and nonpathogenic strains which can be divided into six biotypes (1A, 1B, and 2-5) and about 30 serotypes. The most common types causing yersiniosis in Europe are Y. enterocolitica bioserotypes 4/O:3 and 2/O:9. Strains belonging to biotype 1A are considered as nonpathogenic because they are missing important virulence genes like the attachment-invasion-locus (ail) gene in the chromosome and the virulence plasmid. The role of wild small…

Antimicrobial and Antibiofilm Activity of a Recombinant Fragment of β-Thymosin of Sea Urchin Paracentrotus lividus

2018

With the aim to obtain new antimicrobials against important pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, we focused on antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) from Echinoderms. An example of such peptides is Paracentrin 1 (SP1), a chemically synthesised peptide fragment of a sea urchin thymosin. In the present paper, we report on the biological activity of a Paracentrin 1 derivative obtained by recombination. The recombinant paracentrin RP1, in comparison to the synthetic SP1, is 22 amino acids longer and it was considerably more active against the planktonic forms of S. aureus ATCC 25923 and P. aeruginosa ATCC 15442 at concentrations of 50 &micro

The Impact of Biopreparations and Phytopathogenic Bacteria of the Pseudomonas Genus on L-Phenylalanine Ammonia-Lyase Activity in Soybean and Lupine P…

2020

It is known that plant protection against diseases is based mainly on the use of pesticides. These chemicals or their degradation products have a detrimental effect on the environment and human health. Due to this, the search for methods of plant protection that are safe for the environment is becoming increasingly popular. Induction of plant resistance to disease is one of the promising non-chemical ways of protection, in which plant enzymes play a key role. It was shown that in response to pathogen invasion, plants enhance protective properties by inducing the activity of a wide range of enzymes that slow the spread of infection, in particular: peroxidases, β-1,3-glucanases, chitinases, p…

Varieties of algebras with pseudoinvolution and polynomial growth

2017

Let A be an associative algebra with pseudoinvolution (Formula presented.) over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero and let (Formula presented.) be its sequence of (Formula presented.) -codimensions. We shall prove that such a sequence is polynomially bounded if and only if the variety generated by A does not contain five explicitly described algebras with pseudoinvolution. As a consequence, we shall classify the varieties of algebras with pseudoinvolution of almost polynomial growth, i.e. varieties of exponential growth such that any proper subvariety has polynomial growth and, along the way, we shall give also the classification of their subvarieties. Finally, we shall de…

Multisensory texture exploration at the tip of the pen

2016

A tool for the multisensory stylus-based exploration of virtual textures was used to investigate how different feedback modalities (static or dynamically deformed images, vibration, sound) affect exploratory gestures. To this end, we ran an experiment where participants had to steer a path with the stylus through a curved corridor on the surface of a graphic tablet/display, and we measured steering time, dispersion of trajectories, and applied force. Despite the variety of subjective impressions elicited by the different feedback conditions, we found that only nonvisual feedback induced significant variations in trajectories and an increase in movement time. In a post-experiment, using a pa…

A Difficult Case of Necrotizing Fasciitis Caused By Acinetobacter baumannii

2010

This study reports the case of a 55-year-old woman with diabetes with a necrotizing fasciitis of the right lower limb and the perineum, first admitted at the emergency department for septic shock with cardiac arrest, and later transferred to the department of surgery. Microbiological and histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of necrotizing fasciitis caused by Acinetobacter baumanii. A broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy was administered and later readjusted according to the results of microbiological culture. Intensive hemodynamic support was required. Wounds were dressed daily with a 3 percent boric acid solution and a silver sulfadiazine-impregnated dressing. An extensive s…

Drug resistance patterns of bacteria isolated from patients with nosocomial pneumonia at Tehran hospitals during 2009-2011

2013

Introduction: Nosocomial pneumonia remains an important cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide. Surveillance programs play an important role in the identification of common etiologic agents and local patterns of antimicrobial resistance. Methodology: In this study we determined the frequency and antimicrobial susceptibility of pathogens isolated from patients with nosocomial pneumonia during 2009 to 2011. Results: A total of 642 bacteria were isolated from 516 suspected samples. Acinetobacter baumannii (21.1%, n = 136), was the commonest isolated pathogen followed by Pseudomonas aeruginosa (17.4%, n = 112) , Staphylococcus aureus (15.8%, n = 102) and enterococci (8.4% n = 54). The most …
