It has been demonstrated in an experimental study in swine using the scanning electron microscope that a rebreathing technique utilising minimal fresh gas flowrates significantly improves climatization of anaesthetic gases. Consequently, effects of various anaesthetic techniques on airway climate must be assessed, which covers the need for suitable measuring devices. Lumbar spine mobility in Marfan syndrome

Low back pain symptoms and lumbar spine mobility were assessed by questionnaires and by clinical and radiological measurements in 32 patients with Marfan syndrome. Frequently occurring low back pain was reported by 19% of the patients, but the disability was slight in all of them. Flexion and extension mobility of the lumbar spine (L1-S1) assessed from radiographs was 59.9 degrees and 13.2 degrees, respectively. Mean lumbar angular mobility between flexion and extension radiographs was 7.4 degrees at L1-2, 13.2 degrees at L2-3, 16.0 degrees at L3-4, 19.3 degrees at L4-5 and 18.3 degrees at L5-S1. Abstract Pulmonary chondroid hamartomas (PCH) are benign mesenchymal tumors consisting of at least two cytogenetic subgroups. These subgroups are defined by chromosomal alterations at either 12q14∼q15 or 6p21. Cytogenetic analysis of short-term cultures from two PCHs revealed two different rearrangements with 12q14∼q15. One of these had a unique translocation t(12;14)(q14∼15;q24) with presence of two normal chromosomes 12 and a der(14), but missing the der(12). The aim of this study was to determine whether upregulated cutaneous expression of α1-adrenoceptors (α1-AR) is a source of pain in patients with complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS). Immunohistochemistry was used to identify α1-AR on nerve fibres and other targets in the affected and contralateral skin of 90 patients, and in skin samples from 38 pain-free controls.
