‘I Got To Answer the Way I Wanted To’: Intellectual Disabilities and Participation in Technology Design Activities
2021
User involvement in technology design processes can have positive implications for the designed service, but less is known about how such participation affects people with intellectual disabilities. We explored how 13 individuals with intellectual disabilities experienced participation in the design of a transport support application. The study is based on qualitative interviews, photovoice interviews, participant observations, and Smileyometer ratings. A thematic analysis generated the following themes: a sense of pride and ownership, an experience of socialization, and a sense of empowerment. The findings suggest that participation in design activities is a primarily positive experience t…
The good process or the great illusion? A spatial perspective on public participation in Danish municipal wind turbine planning
2021
This paper explores the nature of public participation in Danish municipal wind power planning. Although the procedure for involving citizens embedded in the environmental impact assessment (EIA) procedure for wind power projects is often praised for its participatory character, the approach is not without problems. In this paper, we identify the limitations and potentials of the public space provided for citizen involvement. By means of Gaventa’s terminology suggesting a continuum of public spaces for participation, the paper shows how the planning process can be approached from different spatial perspectives – each of them illuminating different forms of power, resistance and opportunitie…
Loneliness in sports active and non-active school-age children: Can sport protect children against loneliness?
2023
IntroductionThis study aims to examine can sport protect children against loneliness and, if yes, whether this relationship depends on gender and/or sports-related variables.MethodsThe sample includes 762 10-year-old children (414 boys). The total score of The Children's Loneliness Scale is a dependent variable in the study, while sports participation (sports active—individual or team sports, or non-active) and level/duration of sports participation are independent variables.ResultsObtained results indicate that the degree of loneliness differs depending on gender and whether the children are in sports activities or not. Unlike the level of sports participation, the duration of sports parti…
Conflict, consent, dissensus: The unfinished as challenge to politics and planning
2021
Public participation in planning politics is a legal right in many countries. Planners often see themselves as the defenders of public interests, whereas planning studies may see public planning as the institutionalization of politics, the politicized management or government of disputes on planning issues. Public participation is ultimately a political decision, and this article focuses on how phrases like planning is ‘a work in progress’ and agonistic consensus is a ‘solution for now’ in fact add a critical issue to planning politics: such statements indicate that planning should be seen as an unfinished process, and decisions as temporary. A ‘solution for now’ literally means a ‘planning…

Caleidoscopico Mercato Ballarò: ampio spazio alla ricerca-azione a Palermo
2019
The proposal to trigger regenerative processes in the urban and social fabric in an unstable context is the foundation of this research-action developed with a systemic approach, first observing the environment built in its entirety and subsequently overcoming the limited concept of interventions, over time and in space, through three priority criteria: resilience, adaptability and transformability. These criteria activate a design strategy in complex systems to respond to situations of environmental, social and economic instability. A double tension guides this research in the field through continuous operations of distancing4 and interaction with institutions, associations, marketers and …

Capital humain et compétences de base des adultes : production et valorisation
2013
Basic skills are important in current policies because of high costs generated by illiteracy and supported by the society. The aim of the present thesis is to bring a new contribution on this thematic in a microeconomic approach. It consists of two parts. The first one concerns the valorization of basic skills on the labor market, through chapters 1 and 2, while the second one concerns the production of French skills according to the migratory origins, through chapters 3 and 4. Chapter 1 is about the returns to basic skills on the labor market, in terms of overeducation/undereducation and in terms of wages. The central hypothesis is to assume that education, through the diploma, is not a go…
Participatory tools and methods for community action. SESPAS Report 2018
2018
Patient engagement with research:European population register study
2014
Background Lay involvement in implementation of research evidence into practice may include using research findings to guide individual care, as well as involvement in research processes and policy development. Little is known about the conditions required for such involvement. Aim To assess stroke survivors’ research awareness, use of research evidence in their own care and readiness to be involved in research processes. Methods Cross sectional survey of stroke survivors participating in population-based stroke registers in six European centres. Results The response rate was 74% (481/647). Reasons for participation in register research included responding to clinician request (56%) and to …
