Multi-Connectivity in 5G and Beyond Non-Terrestrial Networks

2022

The Fifth Generation (5G) communications systems aim to serve such service classes as Ultra-Reliable Low Latency Communications (URLLC), enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB), and massive Machine-Type Communications (mMTC). To meet the growing requirements posed to mobile networks, satellites can be used to complement the Terrestrial Networks (TNs). To increase the efficiency of the satellite communications involved, bandwidth-efficient techniques should be used. Multi- Connectivity (MC) is one such technique. In MC, a User Equipment (UE), for example, a smartphone, can be connected to multiple Next Generation Node Bs (gNBs) simultaneously. In this paper, an adaptive MC activation scheme for thr…

Carpal tunnel release surgery: small-area variation and impact of ambulatory surgery in the autonomous region of Valencia, Spain

2013

Objective: This study aimed to analyze variability in rates of carpal tunnel release surgery among the healthcare areas of the autonomous region of Valencia, and to evaluate the contribution of ambulatory surgery and referrals to private hospitals to the variability found. Methods: We carried out a cross-sectional, population-based study, describing the rates of carpal tunnel release surgery, standardized by age and sex, among areas in the region of Valencia in 2006. The observed variation was then analyzed using small-area analysis methods. Data from hospital admissions, referrals to private hospitals, population statistics and hospital resources were used to construct standardized rates, …

Marine molecular biology : An emerging field of biological sciences

2007

An appreciation of the potential applications of molecular biology is of growing importance in many areas of life sciences, including marine biology. During the past two decades, the development of sophisticated molecular technologies and instruments for biomedical research has resulted in significant advances in the biological sciences. However, the value of molecular techniques for addressing problems in marine biology has only recently begun to be cherished. It has been proven that the exploitation of molecular biological techniques will allow difficult research questions about marine organisms and ocean processes to be addressed. Marine molecular biology is a discipline, which strives t…

Exogenous Interference: The European Union’s Economic Partnership Agreements and the Stalled SADC Customs Union

2017

Focussing on the struggle for the scheduled SADC Customs Union, Muntschick reveals that extra-regional actors can actually have a negative impact on regional economic integration in the SADC. Firstly, this chapter refers to the organisation’s agenda on market integration and clarifies the intra-regional demand for the envisaged customs union. Secondly, it highlights the SADC member states’ important but asymmetric trade relations to the European Union and, in regard to this shadow structure of extra-regional interdependence, explains the interfering impact of Brussels’s Economic Partnership Agreements (EPA) on deeper market integration in the SADC. This chapter concludes that the European U…

University–industry partnerships for the provision of R&D services

2015

Technology Transfer Offices (TTOs) are the main institutions responsible for the establishment of university–industry partnerships. R&D contracts exemplify the indirect mechanisms through which enterprises and universities collaborate on a win–win basis. This study addresses organizational and institutional aspects that act as drivers for the establishment of successful university–industry partnerships. First, a series of regression models explain the determinants of R&D contracts. These models include two main dimensions: the university and the technology transfer office. Second, further analysis empirically explores whether universities in regions with a favorable environment enjoy greate…

Seeking partners in international alliances: The influence of cultural factors

2015

Abstract Insufficient attention during the search and selection stages of a prospective partnership may jeopardize the cooperation agreement's chances of success. Therefore, in both of these phases, prospective partners must consider factors that could lead to problems in the cooperation agreement or hinder the international alliance. Following a literature review, the study presents five hypotheses to determine how considering the partner's country of origin, the partner's size, and trust between partners can alleviate future problems during the agreement. Regression analysis using data from 83 firms tests these hypotheses. Findings reveal the importance of trust and highlight an interesti…

Using the Modelling and Simulation Techniques to Improve the Management of SMEs Belonging to Regional Clusters

2015

Abstract The efficiency of exploiting the software takes on new dimensions under the conditions of integrated exploitation at the level of process and structural organization of SMEs found within the regional strategic alliances. The modeling and simulation of the leadership and regulation processes of the supply, sales and production flows imply a complex display of forces between the different partners of the logistic chain which can be supported by the existence of some data bases developed based on information partnership whose purpose is to counterattack the communication barriers and to ensure a flow and flexibility of the entire logistic flow. The modeling and simulation of the non-i…

Portfolio: Integrating Writing, Learning and Assessment

2001

This chapter examines portfolio assessment as a tool to support learning by integrating writing in various learning tasks and environments. The author argues that the constructivist and socioconstructivist views of learning necessitate new ideas also in the assessment where the learners have the main role and where the partnership between students and teachers has to be renegotiated. In particular, renegotiation is needed in making decisions on assessment criteria for writing and learning that respect learners’ individuality and diversity and empower students with regard to their learning. The learning, assessment and negotiation can take place in various ways and environments. Accordingly,…

Współczesne związki intymne w sieci przeszkód i sprzeczności

2020

Fluorine and Gold: A Fruitful Partnership

2016

Gold-catalyzed reactions have witnessed an exponential growth in the past decade. When the unique modes of activation exhibited by gold species meet species with either fluorinated building blocks or fluorinating reagents, new opportunities arise for the development of new methodologies in fluoroorganic chemistry. Indeed, gold and fluorine truly formed a very fruitful partnership, and different types of reactivity emerged from their combination. This review gives an overview of such endeavors. The special properties imparted by fluorine to organic molecules have been exploited in gold-catalyzed processes, allowing for the generation of unprecedented fluorinated chemical entities. Thus, the …
