The close link between brain vascular pathological conditions and neurodegenerative diseases: Focus on some examples and potential treatments

2022

A close relationship is emerging among the age-related neurodegenerative decline, and the age-related typical alterations, dysfunctions, and related diseases of the cerobro-and/or cardiovascular system, which contributes in a significative manner to the triggering and progressing of neurodegenerative diseases (NeuroDegD). Specifically, macroinfarcts, microinfarcts, micro-hemorrhages (and particularly their number), atherosclerosis, arteriolosclerosis and cerebral amyloid angiopathy have been documented to be significantly associated with the onset of the cognitive impairment. In addition, vascular alterations and dysfunctions resulting in a reduced cerebral blood flow, and anomalies in the …

Nutraceutical approaches to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD): A position paper from the International Lipid Expert Panel (ILEP)

2023

Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is a common condition affecting around 10–25% of the general adult population, 15% of children, and even > 50% of individuals who have type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is a major cause of liver-related morbidity, and cardiovascular (CV) mortality is a common cause of death. In addition to being the initial step of irreversible alterations of the liver parenchyma causing cirrhosis, about 1/6 of those who develop NASH are at risk also developing CV disease (CVD). More recently the acronym MAFLD (Metabolic Associated Fatty Liver Disease) has been preferred by many European and US specialists, providing a clearer message on the metabolic etiology of the dis…

Age and Cytokine Gene Variants Modulate the Immunogenicity and Protective Effect of SARS-CoV-2 mRNA-Based Vaccination

2023

The introduction of anti-SARS-CoV-2 vaccines in late 2020 substantially changed the pandemic picture, inducing effective protection in the population. However, individual variability was observed with different levels of cellular response and neutralizing antibodies. We report data on the impact of age, gender, and 16 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of cytokine genes on the anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG titers measured 31 and 105 days after administration of the second dose of BNT162b2 vaccine to 122 healthy subjects from the health care staff of the Palermo University Hospital, Italy. The higher titers at 31 days were measured in the younger subjects and in subjects bearing T-positive genotyp…

Molecular diagnostic tools for the detection and characterization of Phoma tracheiphila

2011

In the recent years PCR-based techniques for the identification and detection of Phoma tracheiphila, the causal agent of citrus mal secco disease, have been evaluated aiming to provide tools for biological and epidemiological studies. A wide collection of P. tracheiphila strains was used to evaluate and validate diagnostic protocols and a fAFLP method for fungal characterization. Conventional and real-time PCR protocols were successfully tested for the specific identification of P. tracheiphila and its detection in planta. A further improvement of the real-time PCR protocol and the DNA extraction methods allowed the quantification of the fungus both from naturally infected and artificially …

Molecular analysis ofPhytophthoradiversity in nursery-grown ornamental and fruit plants

2015

The genetic diversity of Phytophthora spp. was investigated in potted ornamental and fruit tree species. A metabarcoding approach was used, based on a semi-nested PCR with Phytophthora genus-specific primers targeting the ITS1 region of the rDNA. More than 50 ITS1 sequence types representing at least 15 distinct Phytophthora taxa were detected. Nine had ITS sequences that grouped them in defined taxonomic groups (P. nicotianae, P. citrophthora, P. meadii, P. taxon Pgchlamydo, P. cinnamomi, P. parvispora, P. cambivora, P. niederhauserii and P. lateralis) whereas three phylotypes were associated to two or more taxa (P. citricola taxon E or III; P. pseudosyringae, P. ilicis or P. nemorosa; and…

Phytophthora Root and Collar Rot of Paulownia, a New Disease for Europe

2021

Paulownia species are fast growing trees native to China, which are being grown in managed plantings in several European countries for the production of wood and biomasses. In 2018, wilting, stunting, leaf yellowing, and collapse, as a consequence of root and crown rot, were observed in around 40% of trees of a 2-year-old planting of Paulownia elongata × P. fortunei in Calabria (Southern Italy). Two species of Phytophthora were consistently recovered from roots, basal stem bark, and rhizosphere soil of symptomatic trees and were identified as Ph. nicotianae and Ph. palmivora on the basis of both morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analysis of rDNA ITS sequences. Koch’s postulates…

MOLECULAR ANALYSIS OF PHYTOPHTHORA DIVERSITY IN ORNAMENTAL NURSERIES.

2013

A molecular approach based on the use of genus-specific nested-PCR primers (Scibetta et al., 2012; J. Microbiol. Meth. 88: 356-368) was utilized to detect Phytophthora species in soil and root samples of potted ornamentals, collected across Apulia and Calabria, Southern Italy. Analyzed samples comprised many plant species with different levels of symptoms of decline on the canopy and root rots. Extraction protocols were optimized to obtain DNA samples of appropriate quality from soil and roots. The analysis of sequences after cloning of nested-PCR amplicons enabled the identification of different Phytophthora species including P. nicotianae, P. cinnamomi, P. cryptogea, P. palmivora and P. n…

Identification of Phytophthora species infecting citrus in Vietnam

2013

In a survey aimed at identifying Phytophthora species infecting fruit crops in Viet Nam, P. citrophthora and P. nicotianae were the species most commonly recovered from soil and trees in citrus plantations. P. nicotianae was prevalent in citrus groves in the Ben Tre and Tien Giang provinces (southern Viet Nam). Interestingly, both A1 and A2 mating types of the latter species were found, while in other citrus-growing areas of the world, such as the Mediterranean region, South Africa, Australia and the Americas, A1 is the only mating type occurring in citrus groves, suggesting southern-east Asia could be a centre of origin of this Phytophthora species. Mixed infections of three Phytophthora s…
