The Abundance of Tumor-Infiltrating CD8+ Tissue Resident Memory T Lymphocytes Correlates with Patient Survival in Glioblastoma

2022

Glial tumors alone account for 40% of all CNS tumors and present a low survival rate. The tumor microenvironment is a critical regulator of tumor progression and therapeutic effectiveness in glioma. Growing evidence from numerous studies of human solid tumor-infiltrating CD8(+) T cells indicates that tissue-resident memory T cells (TRM) represent a substantial subpopulation of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs). Although it is reported that some types of cancer patients with high immune infiltration tend to have better outcomes than patients with low immune infiltration, it seems this does not happen in gliomas. This study aimed to characterize TRMs cells in the glioma tumor microenviron…

Inflammatory Response to a High Radiation Dose in Breast Cancer

2014

Background: Radiation therapy (RT) is an essential treatment modality used for breast cancer (BC) care. Radiations can stimulate the immune system via the early activation of cytokine cascades, which can greatly affect cellular radio-sensitivity. Our aim is to analyze inflammatory response induced by high ionizing radiation (IR) doses, generated by intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) treatment, to identify several potential targets that may influence cell radio-response. Methods: MCF10, MCF7 and MDA-MB231 BC cell lines have been exposed to high IR (23 Gray and 9 Gray), delivered by IORT treatments. Conditioned media (CM) were assayed at the time points: 0’, 30’, 1, 3, 6, 24, 48, and 72 hours…

Endothelial Progenitor Cells A New Real Hope?

2017

Chronic inflammatory diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and cancer, have a disproportionate prevalence with advancing age owing to the continuous growth in the aging population. This condition determines several medical, economic and social problems due to the dramatic increase in the number of affected individuals, who are not autonomous. Thus, research efforts are centred around reducing and/or delaying the onset and progression of these diseases by researching new strategies for early prevention and diagnosis. In this context, understanding the mechanisms involved in the tissue, organ protection and repair are imperative for the developme…

Role of Matrix Metalloproteinases in complications of thoracic aortic aneurysm

2014

Objectve: Metalloproteinases (MMPs) are endopeptidases involved in extracellular matrix remodelling, associated with both physiopatological processes of several human tissues and systems, such as vascular system. It is well known their involvement in mediating both beneficial and pathological aorta effects, such as abdominal orta aneurysms and its complcations. On the contrary, unclear data exist about their role in the pathophysiology of sporadic thoracic aneurysm (TAA) and its complications. Thus, the aim of this study was to nalyse the role of MMPs in TAA complications, i.e. rupture and dissection. Methods: Aortic specimens obtained from 73 patients (51 men and 22 women, age 61.7 years) a…
