RED BLOOD CELL DISTRIBUTION WIDTH PREDICTS MORBIDITY AND MORTALITY AFTER AORTIC VALVE REPLACEMENT

2014

Objective: Red blood cell distribution width (RDW), is a measurement of the size variation as well as an erythrocyte heterogeneity index (i.e., anysocytosis). used in combination with the mean corpuscular volume for anemia diagnosis. However, it is emerging as an useful predictor biomarker of mortality and morbidity of cardiovascular diseases. However, until now no literature data there are about the RDW role in predicting mortality after aortic valve replacement (AVR). Thus, in this pilot study biological significance of elevated RDW values in early outcome following AVR was evaluated Methods: We enrolled 75 patients (mean age 73.5 ±7.9 years) subjected to AVR and/ or not co temporally to …

Detection of Southern tomato virus by molecular hybridisation

2017

Southern tomato virus (STV) is a double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) virus belonging to the genus Amalgavirus from the family Amalgamaviridae. STV has been detected in tomato plants showing symptoms of stunting, fruit discoloration and size reduction, although its role on symptom development is unclear. Also, little is known about the incidence and epidemiology of this virus and how it spreads in tomato crops. In this work, we developed a molecular hybridisation method by using a digoxigenin-labelled RNA probe based on the nucleotide sequence of the STV putative coat protein which was tested with different procedures for preparation of plant material. This technique was sensitive enough to detect S…

Evaluation of oleander accessions for resistance to Pseudomonas savastanoi pv. nerii

2006

Nine oleander accessions were evaluated for resistance to Pseudomonas savastanoi pv. nerii, causal agent of the oleander knot disease. None of the accessions was resistant when tested with three bacterial strains of different virulence, but they varied significantly in the severity of symptoms induced by these strains. The most susceptible accessions "Dark Salmon" (dark salmon flower) showed deformation of stems, leaves and seed pods and secondary knots on aerial parts, whereas the least susceptible one "White" (white flower), inoculated with the least virulent strain, showed neither localized knots at the inoculation point nor secondary symptoms. In this study an in vitro test, based on pr…

The Necrophilic Laughter : Humor as a Social Pathology

2018

In this article, I claim that humor can be a form of social pathology. In opposition to the general humor-affirmative atmosphere, I develop the critical tradition of humor research, and suggest that there is a darker side to fun and laughter. Using insights from Henri Bergson’s theory about laughter and Erich Fromm’s critical social thinking, I formulate a novel theoretical combination which opens up fruitful perspectives on contemporary humor and its social nature. This empirically motivated conceptual position helps us to understand the role and function of humor and laughter. My conclusion is that parts of the contemporary humor catalogue reflect collective destructive and even death-ori…

Attualità e future prospettive terapeutiche

2005

The prolyl-isomerase PIN1 is essential for nuclear Lamin-B structure and function and protects heterochromatin under mechanical stress.

2021

Summary: Chromatin organization plays a crucial role in tissue homeostasis. Heterochromatin relaxation and consequent unscheduled mobilization of transposable elements (TEs) are emerging as key contributors of aging and aging-related pathologies, including Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and cancer. However, the mechanisms governing heterochromatin maintenance or its relaxation in pathological conditions remain poorly understood. Here we show that PIN1, the only phosphorylation-specific cis/trans prolyl isomerase, whose loss is associated with premature aging and AD, is essential to preserve heterochromatin. We demonstrate that this PIN1 function is conserved from Drosophila to humans and prevents…
