Arterial pCO2 and Blood Flow in Different Parts of the Central Nervous System of the Anesthetized Cat

1969

It cannot be regarded as proven that the mechanisms involved in the regulation of local circulation are identical in all parts of the central nervous system. Evidence has been presented that carbon dioxide exerts differential effects in different parts of the CNS [2, 3, 7, 10].

Assessment of cardiovascular risk and prevention of cardiovascular disease in women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: a consensus statement of the Andr…

2010

Women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) often have cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors. The Androgen Excess and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (AE-PCOS) Society created a panel to provide evidence-based reviews of studies assessing PCOS-CVD risk relationships and to develop guidelines for preventing CVD. Participants: An expert panel in PCOS and CVD reviewed literature and presented recommendations. Evidence: Only studies comparing PCOS with control patients were included. All electronic databases were searched; reviews included individual studies/databases, systematic reviews, abstracts, and expert data. Articles were excluded if other hyperandrogenic disorders were not excluded, PCOS…

Effect of Hyper- and Hypoventilation on CBF during Anesthesia

1969

Alexander and Wollman [1, 2, 4, 8], Harper [5] and McDowall and other investigators have published observations on CBF during anaesthesia in man and dog, when arterial pCO2 was altered by hyper- or hypoventilation.

Exercise hyperventilation in chronic heart failure is not caused by systemic lactic acidosis

2005

Background: Patients with heart failure have an abnormally high ventilatory response to exercise associated with gas exchange defects and reduced arterial pCO2. Aims: We examined the possibility of lactic acidosis as the stimulus to this increased ventilation that abnormally depresses pCO2 during exercise in heart failure. Method and results: We studied 18 patients with chronic heart failure. We measured VE/VCO2 slope during exercise, arterial blood gases and lactate concentrations during cardiopulmonary exercise testing (rest, peak exercise and one minute after the end of exercise). Neither VE/VCO2 slope nor arterial pCO2 were related to arterial lactate concentrations at peak exercise (r=…

Consensus On Women'S Health Aspects Of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (Pcos)

2012

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder in females with a high prevalence. The etiology of this heterogeneous condition remains obscure and its phenotype expression varies. Two, widely cited, previous ESHRE/ASRM-sponsored PCOS consensus workshops focused on diagnosis (published in 2004) and infertility management (published in 2008). The present third PCOS consensus paper summarizes current knowledge and identifies knowledge gaps regarding various women's health aspects of PCOS. Relevant topics addressed-all dealt with in a systematic fashion-include adolescence, hirsutism and acne, contraception, menstrual cycle abnormalities, quality of life, ethnicity, preg…

Effect of arterial oxygen tension on cerebral blood flow at different levels of arterial PCO2.

1970

Epidemiology, diagnosis and management of hirsutism: a consensus statement by the Androgen Excess and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Society.

2012

Background Hirsutism, defined by the presence of excessive terminal hair in androgen-sensitive areas of the female body, is one of the most common disorders in women during reproductive age. Methods We conducted a systematic review and critical assessment of the available evidence pertaining to the epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis and management of hirsutism. Results The prevalence of hirsutism is ~10% in most populations, with the important exception of Far-East Asian women who present hirsutism less frequently. Although usually caused by relatively benign functional conditions, with the polycystic ovary syndrome leading the list of the most frequent etiologies, hirsutism may be th…

Insulin resistance and polycystic ovary syndrome.

2008

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common endocrine disorders in humans, affecting approximately 7-8% of women of reproductive age. Despite the criteria adopted, PCOS is considered to be a predominantly hyperandrogenetic syndrome and the evaluation of metabolic parameters and insulin sensitivity is not mandatory. Most women with PCOS also exhibit features of the metabolic syndrome, including insulin resistance, obesity and dyslipidaemia. While the association with type 2 diabetes is well established, whether the incidence of cardiovascular disease is increased in women with PCOS remains unclear. Acknowledging the strong impact of insulin-resistance in the genesis of PCOS co…
