A High Sensitive Nested PCR for Toxoplasma gondii Detection in Animal and Food Samples
2013
Toxoplasma gondii is a major food and waterborne transmitted parasite world-wide. The tissues and meat samples of many warm blooded animals can contain tissues cysts from chronic toxoplasmosis. Water and vegetable can be contaminated by the parasitic oocysts shed through the feces of infected cats, representing the definitive host of the parasite. A sensitive PCR for Toxoplasma gondii detection is described. The first step amplified the region between the 28S and 18S rDNA in the closely related T. gondii and Neospora caninum; RFLP analysis distinguished the DNA from the two morphologically identical parasites. Although N. caninum is not involved in human transmission, so far, it is importan…
Ympäristöestrogeeniseoksen yhteisvaikutus 20dpfZF-seeprakalan vitellogeniinigeenin ilmentymiseen
2011
Ihmisten toimesta ympäristöön joutuvien vierasaineiden vaikutukset hormonitoimintaan ovat viime vuosina herättäneet paljon keskustelua. Yksi alan tutkituimmista aihealueista on estrogeenin kaltaisesti vaikuttavien aineiden eli ympäristöestrogeenien aiheuttamat lisääntymis- ja kehityshäiriöt. Estrogeenisiä vaikutuksia voidaan tutkia monella tapaa, alkaen solutason vasteista populaatiokehitykseen. Yksi paljon käytetty molekyylimarkkeri on kalojen vitellogeniinitason mittaus.
Nonlinear data description with Principal Polynomial Analysis
2012
Principal Component Analysis (PCA) has been widely used for manifold description and dimensionality reduction. Performance of PCA is however hampered when data exhibits nonlinear feature relations. In this work, we propose a new framework for manifold learning based on the use of a sequence of Principal Polynomials that capture the eventually nonlinear nature of the data. The proposed Principal Polynomial Analysis (PPA) is shown to generalize PCA. Unlike recently proposed nonlinear methods (e.g. spectral/kernel methods and projection pursuit techniques, neural networks), PPA features are easily interpretable and the method leads to a fully invertible transform, which is a desirable property…
Pico: A data acquisition program for picosecond laser spectroscopy
1992
Abstract A data acquisition and control program for picosecond pump and probe experiments has been developed. The program PICO is written in C-programming language for maximum efficiency. The software which runs on an IBM PC compatible microcomputer controls a stepper motor driven optical delay, and at the same time collects data from a digital lock-in amplifier. PICO can be used to control any experiment utilizing two-beam pump probe technique. The modular structure of the software allows for easy implementation with different hardware configurations. The program includes: measurement option, manual control of the delay line using a joystick and functions for file retrieval and editing. Ad…
Heterogeneity of Human Melanoma Cell Lines: a quantitative study of protein and mRNA expression profiles using Flow Cytometry and Real time PCR
2015

Polychlorinated Biphenyls in Sediments from Sicilian Coastal Area (Scoglitti) using Automated Soxhlet, GC-MS, and Principal Component Analysis
2014
A methodology for the PAHs and PCBs congener determination in sediment samples has been revised. We determined the distributions of PAHs and PCBs in the superficial sediments of the Scoglitti (Italy) coastal area to provide data for comparison with other marine systems and to hypothesize the sources. Extraction yield, for PCB, was never less than 60% in most cases, while for PAHs, utilizing perdeuterated surrogate standard (benz[a]anthracene-d12 and anthracene-d10) was never less than 72%. The total concentration of the 16 PAHs investigated, expressed as the sum of concentrations, PAHs, varied from 1–5087 μg/kg of dry matrix, while the PCBs ranged from detection limit to 36 μg/kg of dry mat…
Phenazine antibiotics produced by fluorescent pseudomonads contribute to natural soil suppressiveness to Fusarium wilt
2009
Natural disease-suppressive soils provide an untapped resource for the discovery of novel beneficial microorganisms and traits. For most suppressive soils, however, the consortia of microorganisms and mechanisms involved in pathogen control are unknown. To date, soil suppressiveness to Fusarium wilt disease has been ascribed to carbon and iron competition between pathogenic Fusarium oxysporum and resident non-pathogenic F. oxysporum and fluorescent pseudomonads. In this study, the role of bacterial antibiosis in Fusarium wilt suppressiveness was assessed by comparing the densities, diversity and activity of fluorescent Pseudomonas species producing 2,4-diacetylphloroglucinol (DAPG) (phlD+) …
