Long-term outcomes of percutaneous coronary interventions or coronary artery bypass grafting for left main coronary artery disease in octogenarians (…

2014

Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with drug-eluting stents is an accepted alternative to surgery for the treatment of unprotected left main coronary artery (ULMCA) disease, but the long-term outcome in elderly patients is unclear. Aim of our study was to compare the clinical outcomes of octogenarians with ULMCA disease treated either with PCI with drug-eluting stents or coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). The primary study end point was the composite of death, cerebrovascular accident, and myocardial infarction at follow-up. A total of 304 consecutive patients with ULMCA stenosis treated with PCI or CABG and aged 80 years were selected and analyzed in a large multinational regist…

La politica per le donne : Nilde Iotti e l’impegno per l’emancipazione femminile

2021

The contribution aims to retrace some particularly significant moments of the commitment of Nilde Iotti in promoting women’s rights. Iotti, a founding mother of the Republic and prominent figure of the Italian Communist Party (PCI), fought for the democratization of Italian society through women’s emancipation. This essay focuses on Iotti’s public role and political action from the election to the Constituent Assembly (1946) until the late Seventies. In 1979, indeed, Nilde Iotti - the “Lady of the Republic” – was elected President of the Chamber, as a result of a life devoted to political engagement. In particular, the focus of the essay is on Iotti’s major effort in supporting family trans…

Fast and compact data acquisition for gas-filled detectors with delay line

2004

This article describes the functionality, implementation and performance of a PCI data acquisition board that can be used in conjunction with gas-filled detectors with delay line readout. The board combines a large on-board 256-MByte histogramming memory with a maximum 10-MHz count rate in continuous operation and integrates the time frame generation, histogram building and buffering functionalities in a single PCI board, resulting in a fast, compact and cost-effective data acquisition solution for the Spanish beamline BM16 at ESRF.

Prophylactic cranial irradiation in stage IV small cell lung cancer

2019

Background: Due to conflicting results between major trials the role of prophylactic cranial irradiation (PCI) in stage IV small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is controversial. Methods: We obtained a list of 13 European experts from both the European Society for Therapeutic Radiation Oncology (ESTRO) and the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC). The strategies in decision making for PCI in stage IV SCLC were collected. Decision trees were created representing these strategies. Analysis of consensus was performed with the objective consensus methodology. Results: The factors associated with the recommendation for the use of PCI included the fitness of the patient, young age…

0112: Major improvement in one-year mortality in elderly patients with acute myocardial infarction in relation with early PCI and recommended medicat…

2016

Background and aimOutcomes of AMI patients have substantially improved over the past 2 decades. Whether similar trends are observed in elderly (≥75 years of age) and younger patients has not been extensively studied.MethodsWe analysed one-year mortality of elderly vs younger patients in 4 nationwide French survey carried out 5 years apart from 1995 to 2010. Consecutive STEMI and NSTEMI patients (≤48 hours from onset) were recruited over one-month periods. Among 10610 patients included in the 4 surveys, 3389 (32%) were aged 75+.ResultsFrom 1995 to 2010, the proportion of 75+remained stable in NSTEMI (1995: 36%, 2010: 38%), but decreased in STEMI patients (1995: 30%, 2010: 25.5%, P=0.006). A PCI Express optical link based on low-cost transceivers qualified for radiation hardness

2013

In this paper we want to demonstrate that an optical physical medium is compatible with the second generation of PCI Express. The benefit introduced by the optical decoupling of a PCI Express endpoint is twofold: it allows for a geographical detachment of the device and it remains compliant with the usual PCI accesses to the legacy I/O and memory spaces. We propose two boards that can bridge the PCI Express protocol over optical fiber. The first is a simple optical translator while the second is a more robust switch developed for connecting up to four devices to a single host. Such adapters are already working in the control and data acquisition system of a particle detector at CERN and hen…

Clinical use of intracoronary imaging. Part 1: guidance and optimization of coronary interventions. An expert consensus document of the European Asso…

2018

This Consensus Document is the first of two reports summarizing the views of an expert panel organized by the European Association of Percutaneous Cardiovascular Interventions (EAPCI) on the clinical use of intracoronary imaging including intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) and optical coherence tomography (OCT). The first document appraises the role of intracoronary imaging to guide percutaneous coronary interventions (PCIs) in clinical practice. Current evidence regarding the impact of intracoronary imaging guidance on cardiovascular outcomes is summarized, and patients or lesions most likely to derive clinical benefit from an imaging-guided intervention are identified. The relevance of the u…

Procedural characteristics and outcomes following chronic total occlusion coronary intervention: pooled analysis from 5 registries.

2021

Background Recent improvement in clinical skills, technology and hardware has resulted in improved success rates with chronic total occlusion (CTO) percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). We performed a study level pooled analysis from the five largest registries of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) of CTO. Research design and methods We conducted pooled analysis of 9500 patients in registries and data on procedural characteristics, technical success, and MACCE was collected. Results A total of 9500 patients were included in the analysis. Mean age was 65.4 years with previous CABG in 24.8%, reattempt procedure in 24.8% and mean JCTO score was 2.2. Final wiring strategy in hybrid al…

Guideline-adherence and perspectives in the acute management of unstable angina - Initial results from the German chest pain unit registry.

2015

Abstract Background We investigated the current management of unstable angina pectoris (UAP) in certified chest pain units (CPUs) in Germany and focused on the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) guideline-adherence in the timing of invasive strategies or choice of conservative treatment options. More specifically, we analyzed differences in clinical outcome with respect to guideline-adherence. Method Prospective data from 1400 UAP patients were collected. Analyses of high-risk criteria with indication for invasive management and 3-month clinical outcome data were performed. Guideline-adherence was tested for a primarily conservative strategy as well as for percutaneous coronary interventi…
