The role of personal and relative job performance in promotion decisions

This study employs personnel data from a large university to examine how supervisors utilize information on employees' job performance in promotion decisions. The study shows that better-performing employees are rewarded with promotions as a higher output of peer-reviewed publications and better quality of research output are associated with a higher probability of being promoted. The study also shows that supervisors compare their subordinates' job performance when deciding on promotions: employees who outperform their colleagues in terms of research output and research quality are more likely to be promoted. The present investigation addresses the gravity of mispronunciation for the intelligibility of English spoken by L1 Finland-Swedish teenagers. Previous research on the topic has been scarce, and even though there is some knowledge about the typical pronunciation challenges faced by this learner group, there is hardly any empirical research on the extent to which the typical mispronunciations actually cause misunderstandings. To investigate this, speech samples were elicited from teenaged L1 Finland-Swedish learners of English, demonstrating typical mispronunciations. I argue in this article that a theory of broad ecological justice or the extended capabilities approach, an interesting approach in contemporary environmental ethics, shares many of its core ideas with deep ecology and Arne Næss’s ecosophy T. The similarities between these approaches include the ambition to address the roots of environmental problems, emphasis on recognition and the criticism of oppressive structures, and a systemic orientation. Effect of pulse amplitude on depression and potentiation of ZrO2(Y)-based memristive synaptic device

The effect of the amplitude of depressing and potentiating pulses on the synaptic plasticity (potentiation and depression) of a memristive device based on the Ta/ZrO2(Y)/Pt stack has been experimentally studied. It is shown that the amplitude of depressing and potentiating pulses affects the synaptic plasticity, namely, the value of current passing through the memristive device. The presented results demonstrate the prospects of using the ZrO2(Y)-based memristive devices as stable and low-power elements of neuromorphic systems.

Celem pracy było rozpoznanie wpływu zanieczyszczeń komunikacyjnych na glebę i roślinność uprawnianą przy pasie drogowym. Zanieczyszczenia te, to nie tylko spaliny, ale również pyły powstające w wyniku tarcia opon o nawierzchnie drogi, płyny wyciekające z nieszczelnych instalacji oraz śmieci wyrzucane przez kierowców w trakcie jazdy. Roślina bytująca w takim środowisku, jest narażona na liczne stresy i uszkodzenia. Główną przyczyną wpływającą niekorzystnie na rozwój roślin, a nawet powodującą ich śmierć, jest potęgujące się stale zanieczyszczenie powietrza, zwłaszcza w rejonach śródmiejskich jak i wzdłuż obciążonych tras komunikacyjnych.
