A new metallothionein gene from the giant keyhole limpet Megathura crenulata.

2003

Abstract Metallothioneins (MTs) are small soluble proteins ubiquitously expressed in animals and plants. Different isoforms are present in deuterostomes and protostomes. They do not differ greatly in primary structure, but are clearly distinguishable. Here, I present the gene and the complete cDNA of a novel MT from the mollusk Megathura crenulata . This protein is closely related to the Cu-inducible MTs of the vineyard snail Helix pomatia , but has also some minor sequence features typical of Cd-inducible isoforms of H . pomatia and other molluscs. Overall, the deduced primary structure is similar to the known molluscan MTs, but in addition possesses an insertion of 5 amino acids not found…

Comparative Genomics of the RBR Family, Including the Parkinson's Disease–Related Gene Parkin and the Genes of the Ariadne Subfamily

2002

Genes of the RBR family are characterized by the RBR signature (two RING finger domains separated by an IBR/DRIL domain). The RBR family is widespread in eukaryotes, with numerous members in animals (mammals, Drosophila, Caenorhabditis) and plants (Arabidopsis). But yeasts, such as Saccharomyces cerevisiae or Schizosaccharomyces pombe, contain only two RBR genes. We determined the phylogenetic relationships and the most likely orthologs in different species of several family members for which functional data are available. These include: (1) parkin, whose mutations are involved in forms of familial Parkinson's disease; (2) the ariadne genes, recently characterized in Drosophila and mammals;…

IntroductionMental health is marked by gender differences. We formed a multi-cohort consortium to perform GEnder-Sensitive Analyses of mental health trajectories and study their implications for prevention (GESA). GESA aims at (1) identifying gender differences regarding symptoms and trajectories of mental health over the lifespan; (2) determining gender differences regarding the prevalence, impact of risk and protective factors; and (3) determining effects of mental health on primary and secondary outcomes (eg, quality of life, healthcare behaviour and utilisation). Methods and analysisWe plan to perform secondary analyses on three major, ongoing, population-based, longitudinal cohorts (Gut…

Characterization of a novel open reading frame, urf a, in the mitochondrial genome of fission yeast: correlation of urf a mutations with a mitochondr…

1991

Between the genes for tRNA(gin) and tRNA(ile) an open reading frame of 227 amino acids has been identified which is unique among known mitochondrial genomes and which has been termed urf a (Lang et al. 1983; Kornrumpf et al. 1984). It uses the "mitochondrial" genetic code, i.e., it contains a TGA codon, whereas all other protein-encoding genes, and all but one intronic open reading frame, use the "standard" genetic code (UGG for tryptophan). A previous paper has demonstrated that "mutator" strains show an increased formation of mitochondrial drug-resistant and respiration-deficient mutants (including deletions). In this paper we show that the mutator activity is correlated with mutations in…

A comparative genetic study on exploited vs. Unperturbed wild populations of Helix Pomatia (L., 1758): preliminary results

2021

Helix pomatia is one of the most well known species of land snails across Europe and it presents economical importance due to its consumption as food. The preliminary results of the genetic comparison between two populations, one of them under the pressure of exploitation, are presented here. As expected, most indices revealed a disequilibrium in the exploited population, with the exeption of the allelic pattern which was similar among the two studied populations.

Pompei all'opera: iconografie romane nella Jone di Errico Petrella

2019

Within the studies dedicated to the history of the classical tradition, n…
