Aliens Coming by Ships: Distribution and Origins of the Ocellated Skink Populations in Peninsular Italy

2022

The ocellated skink (Chalcides ocellatus) is a widespread lizard, naturally distributed between the Maghreb and coastal Pakistan, with few insular populations in the Mediterranean coastal area. Some populations of this species have also been recorded in peninsular Italy, Campania and Southern Tuscany due to accidental introductions via touristic and commercial routes. In this work, we conducted genetic analyses on mitochondrial DNA COXI, cytb and 16S mtDNA genes on a sample of Italian insular and peninsular populations. Differently from what previously suggested, the nucleus in Portici (Southern Italy) may have originated from Sardinia. The intense trade and touristic traffic between Sardin…

Chemical and dimensional evolution of cationic ions exchange resins in cement pastes

2013

Ion exchange resins (IERs) are widely used by the nuclear industry to decontaminate radioactive effluents. After use they are usually encapsulated in cementitious materials. However, the solidified waste forms can exhibit a strong expansion, possibly leading to cracking. Its origin is not well understood as well as the conditions when it occurs. In this work, the interactions between cationic resins in the Na+ or Ca2+ form and tricalcium silicate (C3S), Portland cement (CEM I) or Blastfurnace slag cement (CEM III/C) are investigated at an early age in order to gain a better understanding of the expansion process. The results show that during the hydration of a paste of C3S or CEM I containing…

Circulating Endothelial Cell Levels Correlate with Treatment Outcomes of Splanchnic Vein Thrombosis in Patients with Chronic Myeloproliferative Neopl…

2022

Circulating endothelial cells (CECs) are viable, apoptotic or necrotic cells, identified by CD 146 surface antigen expression, considered a biomarker of thrombotic risk, given their active role in inflammatory, procoagulant and immune processes of the vascular compartment. Growing evidence establishes that CECs are also involved in the pathogenesis of several hematological and solid malignancies. The primary aim of this study was to verify if CEC levels could predict both the course and treatment responses of splanchnic vein thrombosis (SVT), either in patients affected by myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) or liver disease. Thus, a retrospective multicenter study was performed; fifteen pa…

The beautiful Yvonne of Louisiana. La bella Yvonne della Louisiana

2019

To understand New Orleans, it is necessary to look at her geographically: wedged on the majestic delta of the powerful Mississippi. Like any other city sitting on river deltas, her relationship with water is not linear (longitudinal as in coastal cities, transversal as in fluvial cities); rather it is complex and deep. Water appears where you least expect it, sweet and salty at the same time like her food, precious and painful like her story, with a beginning and end like her parades.

This could be Rotterdam or anywhere

2016

This could be Rotterdam … on your first date with Hollandse nieuwe, the herrings caught in the North Sea during the months of May and June, cured-in-brine and then served simply with grounded white onion, to eat upside of taking them by the tail as taught by the historical poster. The biggest port of Europe dedicates its finest culinary contribution to celebrate its ancestral relationship with the Sea.

Collaborative Governance in Portugal – Yes or No? A critical approach based on an empirical survey

2019

Collaborative governance can be defined as a concerted type of decision-making and collective action in which government bodies and private sector stakeholders interact as equal partners with the aim of achieving outcomes of interest for both parties. In practical terms, this is a type of governance where special meetings and negotiations are held – typically in somewhat elitist and secretive settings – with the aim of defining shared responsibilities and benefits associated with joint public-private ventures. Academic authors in favour of the adoption of collaborative governance in Portugal tend to present a rather positive view on the merits of this approach. They argue that it is potenti…
