Apoptosis induced in HepG2 cells by the synthetic cannabinoid WIN: involvement of the transcription factor PPARgamma.

2008

It has recently been shown that cannabinoids induce growth inhibition and apoptosis in different tumour cell lines. In the current study, the effects of WIN 55,212-2 (WIN), a synthetic and potent cannabinoid receptor agonist, are investigated in hepatoma HepG2 cells and a possible signal transduction pathway is proposed. In these cells, WIN induces a clear apoptotic effect which was accompanied by up-regulation of the death-signalling factors Bax, Bcl-X(S), t-Bid and down-regulation of the survival factors survivin, phospho-AKT, Hsp72 and Bcl-2. Moreover, WIN-induced apoptosis is associated with JNK/p38 MAPK pathway activation and mitochondrial depolarisation demonstrated by a cytofluorimet…

Vibrational spectra and DFT calculations of PPV-oligomers

2003

The first two members of the p-phenylenevinylene- oligomer family (i. e. 1, 4-distyrylbenzene [DSB] and 4, 4'-distyrylstilbene [DSS]) were synthesized and their infrared and Raman spectra recorded and empirically assigned. Molecular geometries were optimized for the planar point group (C2h) by the density functional theory (DFT) method using the B3LYP functional and 6-31G* basis set. Calculations of vibrational spectra, including intensities, were carried out subsequently using the DFT method with the same basis set and linear scaling was applied. Calculated vibrational wavenumbers are in a fair agreement with our own experimental spectra. In order to explore changes in vibrational dynamics…

A preliminary investigation of the effect of contact pressure on the accuracy of heart rate monitoring by wearable PPG wrist band

2019

The increase of safety and health monitor of workers has become a crucial objective to prevent excessive physical workloads, injuries, accidents and errors. Heart rate (HR) is a very important physiological indicator which could properly describe the workers’ physical status. Recently, wearable photoplethysmographic (PPG) wristband trackers have been utilized to measure HR without hindering normal gesture of workers. However, the quality of PPG signals is highly affected by human physical motions, resulting in a poor reliable HR estimation. Specifically, during different activities and gestures, PPG sensor contact pressures may have an impact on the quality of the heart rate signal. To appr…

Src proteins/src genes: from sponges to mammals

2004

The genome of marine sponge Suberites domuncula, a member of the most ancient and most simple metazoan phylum Porifera, encodes at least five genes for Src-type proteins, more than, i.e., Caenorhabditis elegans or Drosophila melanogaster (two in each). Three proteins, SRC1SD, SRC2SD and SRC3SD, were fully characterized. The overall homology (identity+similarity) among the three S. domuncula Srcs (68-71%) is much lower than the sequence conservation between orthologous Src proteins from freshwater sponges (82-85%). It is therefore very likely that several src genes/proteins were already present in the genome of Urmetazoa, the hypothetical metazoan ancestor. We have identified in the S. domun…

Prediction of type 2 diabetes mellitus based on nutrition data

2021

Abstract Numerous predictive models for the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) exist, but a minority of them has implemented nutrition data so far, even though the significant effect of nutrition on the pathogenesis, prevention and management of T2DM has been established. Thus, in the present study, we aimed to build a predictive model for the risk of T2DM that incorporates nutrition data and calculates its predictive performance. We analysed cross-sectional data from 1591 individuals from the population-based Cooperative Health Research in the Region of Augsburg (KORA) FF4 study (2013–14) and used a bootstrap enhanced elastic net penalised multivariate regression method in order to bu…

Analysis of Thermal Comfort Conditions and Actual Energy Efficiency for Different Heating Systems in Test Buildings

2015

The aim of this study is detailed analysis of long-term monitoring data on thermal comfort conditions and energy efficiency in small test buildings equipped with different heating systems. Calculations of PPD index and local thermal discomfort factors, as well as actual energy efficiency ratios for different heat pump systems are provided for the test buildings during three weeks of the heating season. It is shown that the type of heating system has an influence not only on heating energy needs, but also on thermal comfort conditions in the room.

Ethical E-Participation

2015

The most recent forms of e-participation seem to provide new issues that need to be discussed. One such discussion involves the role of GIS. Can an ethically aware GIS be conceived? What does it mean for a GIS to be ethical at all? Throughout this paper, first the authors create a theoretical framework to encompass four key elements that lead us to the definition of ethical digital mapping: GIS ethics, social justice, power, and participation. Then they introduce the concept of PPGIS (Public Participation GIS), and argue that only a ‘qualitative turn' can enhance their importance in decision-making processes. Finally, the authors discuss an experiment that is currently taking place in Paler…

Higgs boson studies at the Tevatron

2013

We combine searches by the CDF and D0 Collaborations for the standard model Higgs boson with mass in the range 90-200 GeV/c2 produced in the gluon-gluon fusion, WH, ZH, tt̄H, and vector boson fusion processes, and decaying in the H→bb̄, H→W+W-, H→ZZ, H→τ+τ-, and H→γγ modes. The data correspond to integrated luminosities of up to 10 fb-1 and were collected at the Fermilab Tevatron in pp̄ collisions at √s=1.96 TeV. The searches are also interpreted in the context of fermiophobic and fourth generation models. We observe a significant excess of events in the mass range between 115 and 140 GeV/c2. The local significance corresponds to 3.0 standard deviations at mH=125 GeV/c2, consistent with the…

2015. 2. Por qué celebrar primarias

2015

The Role of Firms and Institutional Actors in Developing the Catania Nanotech Network

2009
