This chapter considers Bernardi’s contribution to two different processes of traditional institutions revival in East Africa. He was the main ethnographer of the Mugwe, a traditional dignitary of the Meru of Kenya, that ceased to exist soon after his field work. He used the attribution ‘failing prophet’ in the title of the first edition of his book, changed into ‘blessing prophet’ in the following edition, having in the meanwhile registered a growing symbolic consideration for the institution. The essay explores a moment of Nunzio Incardona’s philosophical path in the early ’70s, when the philosopher was looking for a way to develop the Selb- stdenken. Incardona’s analysis on the self-sufficiency of the existence works in this context as a critical principle that rules out subjectivist or activist solutions, as they oppose the activity of thought to the passivity of acknowledgment of the principle. For Incardona instead the way towards the Selbstdenken starts from the comple- xity of what he calls the assumption of the principle.

The dynamics of printed text production and circulation during the second half of 17th century are shown through an individual case study. Juan Silvestre Salva was a Spanish literate man active in Vienna (translator, occasional poet) before migrating to Sicily as a book professional (proof corrector, publisher and printer, and eventually librarian). His most important venture was perhaps the issue of some texts by Archimedes, that he managed to accomplish in Palermo, from the basis of a former edition that another printer had started in Messina, and then interrupted at the time of the city rebellion against the Spanish crown.
Multiple solutions with sign information for a (p,2)-equation with combined nonlinearities

We consider a parametric nonlinear Dirichlet problem driven by the sum of a p-Laplacian and of a Laplacian (a (p,2)-equation) and with a reaction which has the competing effects of two distinct nonlinearities. A parametric term which is (p−1)-superlinear (convex term) and a perturbation which is (p−1)-sublinear (concave term). First we show that for all small values of the parameter the problem has at least five nontrivial smooth solutions, all with sign information. Then by strengthening the regularity of the two nonlinearities we produce two more nodal solutions, for a total of seven nontrivial smooth solutions all with sign informations. Positive and nodal solutions for nonlinear nonhomogeneous parametric neumann problems

We consider a parametric Neumann problem driven by a nonlinear nonhomogeneous differential operator plus an indefinite potential term. The reaction term is superlinear but does not satisfy the Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz condition. First we prove a bifurcation-type result describing in a precise way the dependence of the set of positive solutions on the parameter λ > 0. We also show the existence of a smallest positive solution. Similar results hold for the negative solutions and in this case we have a biggest negative solution. Finally using the extremal constant sign solutions we produce a smooth nodal solution.
Iterated Conditionals, Trivalent Logics, and Conditional Random Quantities

We consider some notions of iterated conditionals by checking the validity of some desirable basic logical and probabilistic properties, which are valid for simple conditionals. We consider de Finetti’s notion of conditional as a three-valued object and as a conditional random quantity in the betting framework. We recall the notions of conjunction and disjunction among conditionals in selected trivalent logics. Then, we analyze the two notions of iterated conditional introduced by Calabrese and de Finetti, respectively.
