Incremental linear model trees on massive datasets

2013

The existence of massive datasets raises the need for algorithms that make efficient use of resources like memory and computation time. Besides well-known approaches such as sampling, online algorithms are being recognized as good alternatives, as they often process datasets faster using much less memory. The important class of algorithms learning linear model trees online (incremental linear model trees or ILMTs in the following) offers interesting options for regression tasks in this sense. However, surprisingly little is known about their performance, as there exists no large-scale evaluation on massive stationary datasets under equal conditions. Therefore, this paper shows their applica…

A Proposal for an Automatic Stabilizer in Social Justice

2019

Abstract Generally, social justice has two sides which are intercorrelated and inter-dependend: a) constitutive social justice (for example, the so called commutative social justice); b) regulative social justice (for example, the so called distributive social justice). The paper approaches the regulative social justice, more exactly, an automatic mechanism to get it. To this end, an automatic stabilizer to provide distributive social justice, according to the Rawlsian principle of difference. Such an automatic stabilizer is grounded on the wealth, more precise, on the share of the wealth which is not invested in order to benefit to the more disadvantaged class of the society. Paper does no…

Knowledge Creation - A Perspective on the Development of Design Principles

2020

In this paper we reflect on and conceptualize on the development of design principles in a design process. We use the concept of ba to describe how design principles can be created when involving users, domain experts, designers and researchers in the design process. The study applies action design research (ADR) to design and develop a self-reflective career support tool for persons with intellectual disabilities (ID). We have applied processes of knowledge creation and their corresponding ba, the originating ba, the interacting ba, the systemizing ba and the exercising ba to conceptualize the development of design principles. Preliminary findings imply that a structured process of knowled…

Solutions of nonlinear PDEs in the sense of averages

2012

Abstract We characterize p-harmonic functions including p = 1 and p = ∞ by using mean value properties extending classical results of Privaloff from the linear case p = 2 to all pʼs. We describe a class of random tug-of-war games whose value functions approach p-harmonic functions as the step goes to zero for the full range 1 p ∞ .

Self-modeling epistemic spaces and the contraction principle

What Graziano and colleagues describe as the “attention schema” really is one special case of what I have called the “phenomenal model of the intentionality relation” (PMIR) since 1993 (Metzinger, ...

Abstract This article discusses a hypothesis recently put forward by Kanai et al., according to which information generation constitutes a functional basis of, and a sufficient condition for, consciousness. Information generation involves the ability to compress and subsequently decompress information, potentially after a temporal delay and adapted to current purposes. I will argue that information generation should not be regarded as a sufficient condition for consciousness, but could serve as what I will call a “minimal unifying model of consciousness.” A minimal unifying model (MUM) specifies at least one necessary feature of consciousness, characterizes it in a determinable way, and sho…

Briganti, Longhi und «La Maniera italiana» (1961)

2022

Two previously unpublished testimonies by Giuliano Briganti and Roberto Longhi shed light on the role of the art historian in both the collection of iconographic material and the definition of the 'temperature' of colour during the pri…

Triangular Bézier Surfaces of Minimal Area

2003

We study some methods of obtaining approximations to surfaces of minimal area with prescribed border using triangular Bezier patches. Some methods deduced from a variational principle are proposed and compared with some masks.
