Restoration of the Northeast cloister of the Convento de la Compañía de Jesús in Antigua, Guatemala

1998

[EN] The extraordinary history of the foundation, destruction and survival of La Antigua in Guatemala, a city frozen in time over two centuries ago, is the background for the introduction of the history of the Convento de la CompañÌa de Jesús and its northeast cloister, which has recently been restored and whose surrounding buildings have been refurbished to house the headquarters of the Institute of Ibero-American Cooperation in the city.

Luminous lip-prints as criminal evidence.

2005

Luminescence is specially a useful property for the search of invisible evidences at the scene of a crime. In the latent fingerprints particular case, there are at one's disposal fluorescent reagents for their localization. The study of latent lip prints (that is lip prints from protective lipstick, or permanent or long-lasting lipstick that do not leave any visible marks) is more recent than fingerprints study. Because of the different composition of both types of prints, different reagents have been tried out on their developing. Although, lysochromes are particularly useful reagents to obtain latent lip prints, it may occur on coloured or multicoloured surfaces, the developing is not per…

3D printing novel in vitro cancer cell culture model systems for lung cancer stem cell study

2021

Two-dimensional (2D) in vitro cell cultures and laboratory animals have been used traditionally as the gold-standard preclinical cancer model systems. However, for cancer stem cell (CSC) studies, they exhibit notable limitations on simulating native environment, which depreciate their translatability for clinical development purposes. In this study, different three-dimensional (3D) printing platforms were used to establish novel 3D cell cultures enriched in CSCs from non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients and cell lines. Rigid scaffolds with an elevated compressive modulus and uniform pores and channels were produced using different filaments. Hydrogel-based scaffolds were printed with…

The chaotic Dadras–Momeni system: control and hyperchaotification

2015

In this paper a novel three-dimensional autonomous chaotic system, the so called Dadras-Momeni system, is considered and two different control techniques are employed to realize chaos control and chaos synchronization. Firstly, the optimal control of the chaotic system is discussed and an open loop feedback controller is proposed to stabilize the system states to one of the system equilibria, minimizing the cost function by virtue of the Pontryagin’s minimum principle. Then, an adaptive control law and an update rule for uncertain parameters, based on Lyapunov stability theory, are designed both to drive the system trajectories to an equilibrium or to realize a complete synchronization of t…

prefazione al Principe

2018

The Global Side of the Investment-Saving Puzzle

2009

In this paper, we reexamine the long-standing and puzzling correlation between national saving and investment in industrial countries. We apply an econometric methodology that allows us to separate idiosyncratic correlation at the country level from correlation at the global level. In a major break with the existing literature, we find no evidence of a long-run relationship in the idiosyncratic components of saving and investment. We also find that the global components in saving and investments commove, indicating that they react to shocks of a global nature.

Functional Activation of Osteoclast Commitment in Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia: A Possible Role for RANK/RANKL Pathway

2017

AbstractSkeletal erosion has been found to represent an independent prognostic indicator in patients with advanced stages of chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL). Whether this phenomenon also occurs in early CLL phases and its underlying mechanisms have yet to be fully elucidated. In this study, we prospectively enrolled 36 consecutive treatment-naïve patients to analyse skeletal structure and bone marrow distribution using a computational approach to PET/CT images. This evaluation was combined with the analysis of RANK/RANKL loop activation in the leukemic clone, given recent reports on its role in CLL progression. Bone erosion was particularly evident in long bone shafts, progressively inc…

A new methodology based on functional principal component analysis tostudy postural stability post-stroke

2018

[EN] Background. A major goal in stroke rehabilitation is the establishment of more effective physical therapy techniques to recover postural stability. Functional Principal Component Analysis provides greater insight into recovery trends. However, when missing values exist, obtaining functional data presents some difficulties. The purpose of this study was to reveal an alternative technique for obtaining the Functional Principal Components without requiring the conversion to functional data beforehand and to investigate this methodology to determine the effect of specific physical therapy techniques in balance recovery trends in elderly subjects with hemiplegia post-stroke. Methods: A rand…

Quantitative measure of sexual selection with respect to the operational sex ratio: a comparison of selection indices

2006

Despite numerous indices proposed to predict the evolution of mating systems, a unified measure of sexual selection has remained elusive. Three previous studies have compared indices of sexual selection under laboratory conditions. Here, we use a genetic study to compare the most widely used measures of sexual selection in natural populations. We explored the mating and reproductive successes of male and female bank voles,Clethrionomys glareolus, across manipulated operational sex ratios (OSRs) by genotyping all adult and pup bank voles on 13 islands using six microsatellite loci. We used Bateman's principles (IsandIand Bateman gradients) and selection coefficients (s′ andβ′) to evaluate, f…
