Elemental Bromine Production by TiO2 Photocatalysis and/or Ozonation
2016
Significant production of elemental bromine (Br2 ) was observed for the first time when treating bromide containing solutions at acidic pH, with TiO2 photocatalyst, ozone, or a combination thereof. Br2 selectivities up to approximately 85 % were obtained and the corresponding bromine mass balance values satisfied. The process is general and may be applied at a laboratory scale for green bromination reactions, or industrially as a cheap, safe, and environmentally sustainable alternative to the currently applied bromine production methods.
Role of school principals in high achievement of students
2019
The role of the principal in a school is critical because a principal is not only an administrator, but also a manager, initiator of various processes and, ideally, also a school leader who furthers various processes in the school and facilitates high achievement among the students. It is therefore important to study the role of the principal and how the principal can facilitate student achievement. The aim of the research study is to carry out a comparative analysis of data from several countries to find out the factors associated with the activities of the principal (directions of professional activity, factors created by the school culture and environment) that facilitate high achievemen…
PRINTING NANOBIOLOGY IN AQUEOUS SYSTEMS
2015
Our studies in the field of printing nanobiology in aqueous solution are proposed to highlight the role of water in the processes of interaction between biomolecules in drug- screening devices fabricated by bioprinting technologies and to emphasize the influence of water evaporation on the diffusion of molecules in droplets of picoliter-scale.
Characterization of pressure retarded osmosis lab-scale systems
2016
Power generation from salinity gradient is a viable alternative to produce energy from renewable sources. Pressure Retarded Osmosis (PRO) is one of the technologies proposed so far for the exploitation of such energy source. In the present preliminary work, two different geometry modules were tested under atmospheric pressure (i.e. forward osmosis or depressurized-PRO conditions). The first one is a conventional planar geometry cell. The second is a customized cylindrical membrane module, able to mechanically support the osmotic membrane along with the spacers. The latter, thanks to its design, allows membranes and spacers to be easily changed for testing purposes. A novel simplified proced…

The visual principle and the correlation between teaching of the Catholic religion and art education in Polish school
2017
Contemporary culture – as already noted – is becoming more and more visual. Contemporary catechesis, referring to its rich, centuries-long experience, should also use different types of images. The first part of this article presents the visual principle as one of basic educating principles, and the second part presents the correlation between the teaching of Catholic religion, and art education in Polish schools. One specific example of using religious painting are in textbooks. Masterpieces of painting, created during centuries and expressing particular desires of their creators, still remain an important inspiration, among others, to the religious search. Faith, though strongly anchored …
Sulle “Librarie” palermitane nel Settecento: La biblioteca del principe di Torremuzza, sive lo specchio infranto
2011
The reconstruction of eighteenth-century private libraries is a matter that raises questions about the methodological criteria to be used. In line with current historiographical methods, the essay tries to integrate correspondence and literary and archival sources to reconstruct the libraria of Gabriela Lancillotto Castelli, Prince of Torremuzza, taking care to observe the type of circulation and use of books in eighteenth- century Palermo and, more broadly, the particular effervescence of local culture following the expulsion of the Jesuits.
Persistent lipsticks and their lip prints: new hidden evidence at the crime scene
2000
Latent lip print test results produced by permanent lipsticks are presented in this work. This cosmetic product, contrary to conventional lipsticks, does not leave visible prints and can thus be overlooked at the crime scene. As print vehicles the study used ceramics, glass, cotton fabric and paper. Lip prints were left to dwell for different periods and were later developed using aluminum powder, cobalt oxide powder and magnetic powder. The results show that identifiable lip prints can be obtained up to 30 days after being produced.
Design and Digital Fabrication of a Parametric Joint for Bamboo Sustainable Structures
2019
The study deepens the design of a joining system for bamboo spatial structure by proposing new and advanced solutions that guarantee maximum freedom of composition to the designer. The joint allows to determine and control parametrically the adaptability to any spatial grid configuration of culms with heterogeneous dimensions. Despite the bamboo being one of the main natural building materials in the field of sustainable architecture, currently, it is not used enough due to the lack of adequate connection systems. Bamboo is a rapidly growing renewable resource, naturally available, which is quite strong and lends itself to structural applications. The paper proposes an innovative approach t…
Photocatalytic Degradation of Paraquat and Genotoxicity of its Intermediate Products
2007
Abstract The photocatalytic degradation of paraquat (1,1-dimethyl-4,4′-bipyridylium dichloride) aqueous solutions in the presence of polycrystalline TiO2 Degussa P25 irradiated by near-UV light was investigated. The substrate and total organic carbon concentrations were monitored by UV spectroscopy and TOC measurements, respectively: the complete photocatalytic mineralization of paraquat (20 ppm) was achieved after ca. 3 h of irradiation by using 0.4 g l−1 of catalyst amount at natural pH (ca 5.8). On the contrary no significant photodegradation of paraquat was observed in the absence of TiO2 under similar experimental conditions. To evaluate the genotoxicity of paraquat and its intermediat…
