Città Invisibili of Teatro Potlach: A Journey to Rediscover Our Cultural Heritage

2017

Città Invisibili is a multidisciplinary art project made by the Italian company Teatro Potlach. Compared to the canonical theatrical performances, Città Invisibili, being in its essence a site-specific performance, interacts with the place where it grows. With the project, the Italian group builds next to the existing space of the place (physical space and memory space) other two spaces, the space of the staging and the space of the performer, using different materials, in particular cloths and video projections. Moreover Teatro Potlach conducts a historical, anthropological and social research trying to bring out the latent memory of places. All these interventions bring out from the place…

Residual Stresses Induced by Cold Expansion of Adjacent and Cut-Out Holes

2012

Fatigue life of fastener holes can be enhanced via a cold-expansion process to introduce a compressive residual stress field around the hole edge and to reduce crack growth propagation. Considering that aerospace components contain multiple rows of holes, the present investigation focuses on the evaluation of the three-dimensional residual stress distribution in adjacent cold-expanded (CE) holes. The redistribution of residual stresses caused by a cut introduced between two adjacent holes was also investigated. Finite element (FE) analysis and experimental technique were used to assess the residual stress distribution in a 6082-T6 aluminum plate with two adjacent holes expanded sequentially…

Administration of a Synbiotic to Free-Living Elderly and Evaluation of Serum Cytokines. A Pilot Study

2010

Ten free-living elderly were administered with a synbiotic [fermented milk containing Lactobacillus rhamnosus Gorbach and Goldin (LGG)] and oligofructose as a prebiotic for one month. Serum cytokines were evaluated before (T(0)) and after (T(1)) synbiotic administration. At T(0), values of Interleukin (IL)-12, IL-6, IL-10, IL-1beta and Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF)-alpha were lower than normal controls, with the exception of IL-8, thus confirming previous results on the impairment of both innate and adaptive responses in elderly. At T(1), the synbiotic was able to significantly increase, depressed values of IL-1, IL-6 and IL-8 with a trend to a modest increase for the restant cytokines. In co…

Peri-implant parameters in head and neck reconstruction: influence of extraoral skin or intraoral mucosa.

2009

Objective: This study is designed to assess dental implants supporting overdentures in edentulous patients with operated head and neck malignancies using parameters to detect peri-implant disease. Material and methods: Thirty-four implants supporting overdentures in 34 oral cancer patients were examined. Clinical parameters [plaque index, probing depth, bleeding on probing (BOP), origin of peri-implant soft tissue, and amount of irradiation] were recorded, and microbiological identification of periodontal pathogens was carried out by DNA–DNA hybridization. To identify yeast species, the samples were cultivated on Sabouraud agar plates and subsequently identified by API 20C AUX plates. An im…

Fast and low-cost decentralized surveillance of transmission of tuberculosis based on strain-specific PCRs tailored from whole genome sequencing data…

2015

Molecular epidemiology has transformed our knowledge of how tuberculosis (TB) is transmitted. Whole genome sequencing (WGS) has reached unprecedented levels of accuracy. However, it has increased technical requirements and costs, and analysis of data delays results. Our objective was to find a way to reconcile speed and ease of implementation with the high resolution of WGS. The targeted regional allele-specific oligonucleotide PCR (TRAP) assay presented here is based on allele-specific PCR targeting strain-specific single nucleotide polymorphisms, identified from WGS, and makes it possible to track actively transmitted Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains. A TRAP assay was optimized to track…

A chromosome map of the Flavescence dorée phytoplasma

2008

International audience; The Flavescence dorée phytoplasma (FD-P), a non-cultivable, plant-pathogenic bacterium of the class Mollicutes, is the causal agent of a quarantine disease affecting vineyards of southern Europe, mainly in southern France and northern Italy. To investigate FD-P diversity and phytoplasma genetic determinants governing the FD-P life cycle, a genome project has been initiated. A physical map of the chromosome of FD-P strain FD92, purified from infected broad beans, was constructed by performing restriction digests of the chromosome and resolving the fragments by PFGE. Single and double digestions of the chromosome with the enzymes SalI, BssHII, MluI and EagI were perfor…

Dark Matter Search Results from a One Ton-Year Exposure of XENON1T

2018

We report on a search for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) using 278.8 days of data collected with the XENON1T experiment at LNGS. XENON1T utilizes a liquid xenon time projection chamber with a fiducial mass of $(1.30 \pm 0.01)$ t, resulting in a 1.0 t$\times$yr exposure. The energy region of interest, [1.4, 10.6] $\mathrm{keV_{ee}}$ ([4.9, 40.9] $\mathrm{keV_{nr}}$), exhibits an ultra-low electron recoil background rate of $(82\substack{+5 \\ -3}\textrm{ (sys)}\pm3\textrm{ (stat)})$ events/$(\mathrm{t}\times\mathrm{yr}\times\mathrm{keV_{ee}})$. No significant excess over background is found and a profile likelihood analysis parameterized in spatial and energy dimensions exclude…

Primary loading of palatal implants for orthodontic anchorage--a pilot animal study.

2006

Summary Objectives This study aimed at evaluating the clinical performance and osseointegration of short orthodontic implants immediately loaded with orthodontic forces. Material and methods The investigation was designed as an experimental animal study. Eight palatal implants of the Ortho-system® were immediately loaded with 100 cN after palatal insertion in 4 female german shepherd dogs. Xylene orange and calcein green were used for polychrome sequential labelling. Histological preparation utilized the cutting and grinding technique. Outcome variables were clinical implant success, histological osseointegration and bone-to-implant contact rates. Results All (8/8) implants were clinically …

Caractérisation et prédiction du rendement de projection lors du procédé de projection à froid – cas de la métallisation des polymères

2020

This thesis work deals with the cold spray metallization of polymer substrates by aiming at an optimal deposition efficiency using experimental analysis combined with numerical simulation. Experimental observations of the powder jet using an ombroscopic analysis have revealed a generic behavior consisting of a uniform confined zone at the immediate exit of the nozzle followed by a dispersed zone. The supersonic flow at the nozzle exit being essentially axial, the powders are entrained to form a uniform jet. Beyond a certain distance, a dispersion appears. This distance is very important because it characterizes the behavior of the powders. It can alter the conditions for the elaboration of …

Hong Kong-Palermo | Fluid Cities

2018

Being a modern university does not mean simply carrying out with rigor and commitment the role of an educational and research agency, but increasingly requires the need to open up to the city, the region and the world. It means extending our relationships by letting people and ideas navigate the long networks of knowledge, comparison and collaboration. For this reason the University of Palermo is decisively increasing its activity of internationalization and of openness to the inputs that come from the society of widespread knowledge in which we are immersed. In the liquid society also the university must change its mission, capturing the transformations of the contemporary, renewing the mo…
