Phytophthora palmivora a New Pathogen of Lavender in Italy

2019

Root rot caused by Phytophthora nicotianae is considered the most serious disease of lavender in commercial cultivations in Italy. In summer 2001, in the Gela area (Sicily), ≈60% of 34,000 2-year-old landscape shrubs of English lavender (L. angustifolia) grown in a clay loam soil showed symptoms of dieback associated with root rot. Plants had been transplanted from pots in May and watered using a trickle irrigation system. A species of Phytophthora was isolated consistently from roots of symptomatic plants using potato dextrose agar (PDA) containing benomyl, nystatin, pentachloronitrobenzene, rifampicin, ampicillin, and hymexazol. The species was identified as P. palmivora on the basis of …

Assessment of synthetic chemicals for disruption of Rhynchophorus ferrugineus response to attractant-baited traps in an urban environment

2012

The red palm weevil (RPW), Rhynchophorus ferrugineus Olivier (Coleoptera, Curculionidae), is one of the most severe pests of ornamental palm species in urban areas of Mediterranean countries. Aiming to discover inhibitory semiochemicals for RPW population management in urban environments, we conducted electroantennographic (EAG) screenings of 17 commercially available synthetic compounds, representing three groups of plant volatiles (isoprenoids, phenyl propanoid derivatives and fatty acid derivatives) known for their repellent effects toward insects. These tests were followed by trap-based screenings of EAG-active menthone, alpha-pinene and methyl salicylate, singly and in combination, und…

INFLUENCE OF SEED TREATMENT ON GERMINATION PATTERN OF CHAMAEROPS HUMILIS

2015

Dwarf fan palm (Chamaerops humilis L.) is an important Mediterranean species well known for many uses such as gardening, environmental restoration, and technological uses. Dwarf fan palm is usually propagated from seed, which takes up to 100 days to germinate. The germination pattern of dwarf palm seeds was studied during a 100-days length period in relation to different pre-sowing treatments (hot water, sulphuric acid, or mechanical scarification) in comparison to untreated control. A covariance analysis was performed to test the effect of time within seed-treatment treatment. All germination patterns were significantly fitted by a S-shaped (sigmoidal) distribution function with the genera…

Reciprocal Enzymatic Interference of Carnitine Palmitoyltransferase I and Glycerol-3-Phosphate Acyltransferase in Purified Liver Mitochondria

2006

(i) Highly purified mitochondrial fractions were practically devoid of microsomal contamination and of acyl-CoA ligase activity. (ii) In mitochondria, glycerol-3-phosphate acyltransferase (GPAT) activity was supported by two enzymes, the first being very active at low palmitoyl-CoA / albumin ratios and sensitive to external agents (external form), the second being detected only at higher palmitoyl-CoA / albumin ratios and insensitive to external agents (internal form). (iii) Carnitine palmitoyltransferase I (CPT I) activity was shown to inhibit external GPAT activity only. (iv) Glycerol-3-phosphate exerted an inhibitory effect on CPT I, even when GPAT was inactive. Reciprocal interaction of…

Fatty acid composition of the seed lipids ofChamaerops humilisL. natural populations and its relation with the environment

2014

Seed lipids composition is a tool to discriminate among plant taxa and is related to phylogeny and biogeographic distribution. Aim of the present study was to evaluate the fatty acid (FA) composition of the seed lipids from nine natural Chamaerops humilis L. population and its relation with the climatic traits of the collection sites. The average seed lipids content was 54.8 g kg21 and the most represented FAs were oleic (478 g kg21 oil) and linoleic (230 g kg21 oil), with significant differences among the accessions. Most of the lipid traits significantly correlated with climatic traits. In particular, oleic acid negatively correlated with year potential evapotranspiration. These relations…

Responses of Rhynchophorus ferrugineus adults to selected synthetic palm esters: electroantennographic studies and trap catches in an urban environme…

2011

The Red Palm Weevil (RPW), Rhynchophorus ferrugineus Olivier, accidentally introduced in the European countries facing the Mediterranean basin, is becoming the most serious pest for ornamental palms in the urban environment. In our work we tested electroantennogram (EAG) and behavioural responses of RPW adults to five selected synthetic palm esters: ethyl propionate, ethyl butyrate, ethyl isobutyrate, ethyl lactate and ethyl acetate. EAG bioassays showed higher sensitivity of female antennae compared to male antennae for test compounds. Differences were also recorded in the EAG responses using different esters and doses. Ethyl propionate was the synthetic ester that elicited the strongest r…

Use of algae in active biomonitoring of Surface waters

2014

Przeprowadzono badania biomonitoringowe trzech zbiorników retencyjnych położonych na terenie województwa opolskiego (południowa Polska): Zbiornika Turawa, Zbiornika Nysa i Zbiornika Otmuchów. W glonach słodkowodnych Spirogyra sp. i morskich Palmaria palmata (Linnaeus) Weber & Mohr, eksponowanych w badanych wodach, oznaczono metodą absorpcyjnej spektrometrii atomowej (AAS) przyrosty stężeń: Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, Cd i Pb.

1991

It is always useful to set bounds to a semantic field when attempting to discuss lexical transmission. Once our attention is phocused on the names of birds collected by Palmireno in his Vocabulario del Humanista (1569), the influence of Belon, Gesner and specially of Joan B. Agnes becomes evident. On the other hand, it is also evident that the Catalan lexicographer Pere Torra (17th century) used in a rather indiscriminate manner Palmireno's work while assimilating in his Dictionnary words which on the base of their formal and / or their semantic structure can not be considered as Catalan. Some of these words have been nevertheless accepted by 20th century lexicographers.
