Commensality in the Late Bronze Age : places and practices : the contribution of recent discoveries in the south-east of the Paris Basin

2021

This doctoral dissertation uses data from the extensive preventive archaeological research carried out in the Upper Seine Valley in the south-east of the Paris Basin for at least five decades an area where Bronze Age and Early Iron Age sites are numerous and generally well preserved. The 2005 excavation by Inrap of the Villiers-sur-Seine site "le Gros Buisson", an "unusual" settlement dating to the final phase of the Late Bronze Age (9th century B.C.) is the main focus of this study, having shed new light on domestic contexts of this pivotal period. This fortified aristocratic dwelling is characterised by an organised plan, abundant artefacts, as well as the unusual consumption of young pig…

Caldara e l’«amorosa investigazione dell’antico»: sulla fortuna di alcune arie tra Otto e Novecento

2017

Some arias by (or attributed to) Caldara were involved in the revival of ancient music which took place between Nineteenth and early Twentieth Century. The most famous of them, “Come raggio di sol”, is likely a forgery in late-Romantic style, as demonstrated through the examination of its literary and musical features. The short piece acquired great celebrity thanks to the soprano Alice Barbi, who performed it in many European capitals; its fortune was so large that it was quoted word by word and commented in a novel by the Italian writer Matilde Serao, “Ella non rispose” (1914). Moreover, its musical treatment inspired Ottorino Respighi for the fourth of his “Sei melodie” (1909), while its…

Disaster Resilience and Human Settlements in the Anthropocene

2023

The chapter sets the context starting from the emerging perspectives on disaster resilience and human settlements in the larger context of the proposed new geological era of Anthropocene. It explores the impact of disasters on the human settlements, giving examples and illustrating the theoretical reference framework regarding the birth of the idea of the Anthropocene. The chapter focuses on the interdisci-plinary nature of the ‘disaster resilience and human settlements’ theme in relation to the various global development agendas, including the Expanded Brown Agenda, the Hyogo Framework of Action, the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,…

INFLUENCE OF PARTICLE-SIZE DISTRIBUTION MEASUREMENT METHOD ON THE PREDICTION OF SOIL WATER RETENTION CURVE

2013

Application of the Arya and Paris (AP) model to estimate the soil water retention curve requires detailed particle-size distributions (PSD) that can be obtained by fitting a continuous model to traditional sieve-hydrometer (SH) data or using the laser diffraction (LD) method. The AP model was applied to 40 Sicilian soils for which PSD was measured by both SH and LD methods. The scale factor  was set equal to 1.38 (procedure AP1) or estimated by a logistic model with parameters gathered from literature (procedure AP2). To simplify application of the AP model, a relationship for estimating a soil-specific  value from clay content was developed (procedure OPT). For both SH and LD data, proce…
