Agency and agentive prepositions in Late Latin

I propose the results of an analysis whose object is the expression of the Agent by means of a prepositional phrase in Post-Classical and Late Latin passive constructions. My interest comprises both the prepositions used in Latin to encode the passive Agent (namely ab), and those constituting the bases for the development in the Romance languages (namely per and de). The analysis is based on the functional approach to Transitivity proposed by Hopper and Thompson 1980 and on Cognitive Grammar, specifically on Langaker 1991 and the various Luraghi’s works on prepositions and cases in ancient Indo-European languages.

Agent defocusing in two-participant clauses in Finnish Sign Language

This article investigates what strategies are used for defocusing the agent in two-participant clauses in FinSL. The question is approached by analyzing a set of data that consists of videotaped informational texts. Several strategies for agent defocusing were found. First, the agent can simply be omitted. Second, the agent can be expressed with a pronominal pointing sign used non-referentially. Predicting the bioaccumulation of polyaromatic hydrocarbons and polychlorinated biphenyls in benthic animals in sediments

There were two main objectives in this study. The first was to compare the accuracy of different prediction methods for the chemical concentrations of polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the organism, based on the measured chemical concentrations existing in sediment dry matter or pore water. The predicted tissue concentrations were compared to the measured ones after 28-day laboratory test using oligochaeta worms (Lumbriculus variegatus). Robust reliable passive control of uncertain stochastic switched time-delay systems

This paper investigates the problem of robust reliable passive control for a class of uncertain stochastic switched time-delay systems with actuator failures. The multiple Lyapunov functions (MLFs) technique is exploited to derive a delay-dependent sufficient condition for the stochastic switched time-delay systems to be passive and exponentially stable under a state-based switching law. Moreover, the proposed approach is extended to investigate stochastic switched systems with structured uncertainties. Finally, two numerical examples are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Search for Magnetic Monopoles with the MoEDAL Forward Trapping Detector in 13 TeV Proton-Proton Collisions at the LHC

MoEDAL is designed to identify new physics in the form of long-lived highly-ionising particles produced in high-energy LHC collisions. Its arrays of plastic nuclear-track detectors and aluminium trapping volumes provide two independent passive detection techniques. We present here the results of a first search for magnetic monopole production in 13 TeV proton-proton collisions using the trapping technique, extending a previous publication with 8 TeV data during LHC run-1. AbstractActive hepatitis B vaccination of dialysis patients and medical staff. One hundred six patients with terminal renal insufficiency and 29 medical personnel were given three doses of hepatitis B vaccine at an interval of 0, 1, and 6 months (Merck, Sharp and Dohme, West Point, Pennsylvania, part of a joint study no. 649). Chronic hemodialysis patients (N = 99) received 40 µg vaccine (V) i.m. Uremic patients, who were just about to start chronic dialysis treatment (N = 7), were given 40 µg V, and at the first vaccination 3ml hyperimmune globulin (HBIG) in addition. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of active vs passive scapular correction on pain and pressure pain threshold at the most symptomatic cervical segment in patients with chronic neck pain. Efficacy of immunoglobulins in gram-negative infections in experimentally induced peritonitis in the rat

The effect of adjuvantly administered, newly developed immunoglobulin preparations in combination with an antibiotic is investigated by means of an animal experimental model. The animal model was peritonitis which was induced by a left-open colotomy in the rat. Administration of a combination therapy of immunoglobulins and an antibiotic succeeded in reducing lethality and shock index (according to Staub [15]) significantly by up to 50% as compared to the untreated control group.
