Prospective, randomized, single-center trial comparing 3 different 10F plastic stents in malignant mid and distal bile duct strictures.

2003

Abstract Background: The aim of this study was to determine whether patency rates differ with respect to the material, design, and surface texture of 3 different plastic stents. Methods: A total of 120 patients (median age 70.5 years; interquartile range 62-78 years) with malignant mid or distal bile duct strictures, seen between March 1996 and May 1999, were prospectively randomized to receive a 10F polyurethane stent, a Teflon Tannenbaum stent, or a hydrophilic hydromer-coated polyurethane stent. The primary study outcome measure was the interval between stent insertion and the first episode of clogging (or the presence of jaundice at death without stent exchange). All 3 types of stent we…

Computational flow dynamics in a geometric model of intussusceptive angiogenesis.

2009

Intussusceptive angiogenesis is a process that forms new blood vessels by the intraluminal division of a single blood vessel into two lumens. Referred to as nonsprouting or intussusceptive angiogenesis, this angiogenic process has been described in morphogenesis and chronic inflammation. Mechanical forces are relevant to the structural changes associated with intussusceptive angiogenesis because of the growing evidence that physiologic forces influence gene transcription. To provide a detailed analysis of the spatial distribution of physiologic shear stresses, we developed a 3D finite element model of the intraluminal intussusceptive pillar. Based on geometries observed in adult intussuscep…

[Coronary artery ectasia: etiopathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment].

2014

Coronary ectasia is a dilation of coronary arteries, angiographically defined if the diameter of the artery is ≥ 1.5 times greater than that of the intact adjacent vascular segment. An association has been found between coronary artery ectasia and a broad spectrum of different diseases, first of all atherosclerotic coronary artery disease. The mechanisms that determine the abnormal dilatation of the vascular lumen and the etiology of coronary artery ectasia are still poorly understood. Various hypotheses have been formulated over the time, the most accredited between these recognizes as main responsible an uncontrolled activity of a particular family of enzymes that degrade the extracellula…

The route to protein aggregate superstructures: Particulates and amyloid-like spherulites.

2015

AbstractDepending on external conditions, native proteins may change their structure and undergo different association routes leading to a large scale polymorphism of the aggregates. This feature has been widely observed but is not fully understood yet. This review focuses on morphologies, physico-chemical properties and mechanisms of formation of amyloid structures and protein superstructures. In particular, the main focus will be on protein particulates and amyloid-like spherulites, briefly summarizing possible experimental methods of analysis. Moreover, we will highlight the role of protein conformational changes and dominant forces in driving association together with their connection w…

High myopic patients with and without foveoschisis: morphological and functional characteristics.

2020

Purpose: Myopic foveoschisis (MF) is characterized by the splitting of the retinal layers in the fovea of patients with high myopia (HM). MF may progress into foveal detachment or macular hole formation with consequent loss of central vision. The aim of this study is to investigate morphological and functional changes of the macular region in myopic subjects with and without foveoschisis. Design: Observational, cross-sectional, comparative study. Methods: Forty-eight patients with HM and 24 healthy controls were evaluated by spectral domain-optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT), multifocal electroretinography (mfERG) and microperimetry (MP-1) tests to assess macular thickness, functionality…

Roles of molecules involved in epithelial/mesenchymal transition during angiogenesis

2007

Formation of vessels requires "epithelial-mesenchymal" transition of endothelial cells, with several modifications at the level of endothelial cell plasma membranes. These processes are associated with redistribution of cell-cell and cell-substrate adhesion molecules, cross talk between external ECM and internal cytoskeleton through focal adhesion molecules and the expression of several proteolytic enzymes, including matrix metalloproteases and serine proteases. These enzymes with their degradative action on ECM components, generate molecules acting as activators and/or inhibitors of angiogenesis. The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of the molecules involved in epithelial-m…

Extracellular Membrane Vesicles as Vehicles for Brain Cell-to-Cell Interactions in Physiological as well as Pathological Conditions.

2015

Extracellular vesicles are involved in a great variety of physiological events occurring in the nervous system, such as cross talk among neurons and glial cells in synapse development and function, integrated neuronal plasticity, neuronal-glial metabolic exchanges, and synthesis and dynamic renewal of myelin. Many of these EV-mediated processes depend on the exchange of proteins, mRNAs, and noncoding RNAs, including miRNAs, which occurs among glial and neuronal cells. In addition, production and exchange of EVs can be modified under pathological conditions, such as brain cancer and neurodegeneration. Like other cancer cells, brain tumours can use EVs to secrete factors, which allow escaping…

Interassay and interobserver comparability study of four programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) immunohistochemistry assays in triple-negative breast canc…

2021

Different immunohistochemical programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) assays and scorings have been reported to yield variable results in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). We compared the analytical concordance and reproducibility of four clinically relevant PD-L1 assays assessing immune cell (IC) score, tumor proportion score (TPS), and combined positive score (CPS) in TNBC. Primary TNBC resection specimens (n = 104) were stained for PD-L1 using VENTANA SP142, VENTANA SP263, DAKO 22C3, and DAKO 28–8. PD-L1 expression was scored according to guidelines on virtual whole slide images by four trained readers. The mean PD-L1 positivity at IC-score ≥1% and CPS ≥1 ranged between 53% and 75% with th…
