To assess the accuracy of three-dimensional (3D) helical CT of normal airways, we evaluated different imaging protocols in test objects and patients. The clinical value of 3D helical CT was composed with bronchoscopy in patients with suspected stenoses, especially before and after endobronchial procedures.Solid test objects--one of central airways and one of peripheral airways--were scanned and assessed for volume defects and stairstep artifacts. We present an alternative idea for valve-sparing technique combining the advantages of the reimplantation and the benefits of the remodeling techniques. We replace the sinuses of Valsalva using three Dacron skirts from inside of the aorta. The physiological anatomy of the Valsalva sinuses and their dynamic properties are preserved and the aortic commissures displacement avoided. The distal rim of each Dacron skirt was anchored to the aorto-ventricular junction using Ticron (2-0) U stitches placed from the ventricular side to the aortic side. We stabilize the base of the aortic annulus to prevent future dilation.

Abstract Background Cell lines play an important role for studying tumor biology and novel therapeutic agents. Particularly in pulmonary squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) the availability of cell lines is limited and knowledge about their representativeness for corresponding tumor tissue is scanty. Effect of ketotifen on the bronchodilation induced by salbutamol.

Twelve subjects with stable asthma each inhaled two puffs (200 micrograms) of salbutamol on 2 separate days 3 h after double-blind oral administration of ketotifen (two 1-mg capsules) or identical placebo. FEV1 was recorded before and at intervals for 4 h after inhalation of salbutamol. Overall, the FEV1 was significantly greater during the 4-hour period after premedication with ketotifen (p less than 0.02) and the difference between the effect of placebo and ketotifen was statistically significant at 120, 180 and 240 min after salbutamol (p less than 0.05).

Successful surgery of neuroendocrine carcinoma infiltrating right ventricle and pulmonary artery.

We present the clinical case of a 60-year-old woman complained of dyspnea on exertion. Echocardiogram showed a giant mass in the right ventricle (RV) with obstruction to the outflow tract. Thorax computed tomography confirmed a mass of greater than 60 mm infiltrating RV and causing severe stenosis in the pulmonary artery, with severe pericardial effusion. Cardiac surgery was performed for tumor resection and pulmonary root replacement with a biological valved conduit. Histological analysis diagnosed a poorly differentiated large-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma. The patient had no immediate postoperative complications and has completed radiotherapy at a 9-month follow-up.

In a previous study, we reported a new pyrazolo pyrimidine derivative, N(4)-benzyl-N(6),N(6)-dimethyl-1-1(tert-butyl)-1H-pyrazolo[3,4-d]pyrimidine-6,4-diamine (DPP), which inhibited potently cyclooxygenase-2 activity in intact cell assays with minor activity against cyclooxygenase-1 (IC(50)=0.9 nM for cyclooxygenase-2 versus IC(50)=59.6 nM for cyclooxygenase-1). In the present work, this behaviour was confirmed in vivo by using the 24-h zymosan-injected mouse air pouch model (ID(50)=1.36 nM/pouch for prostaglandin E(2) level). Here we show the increase of invasion of three breast cancer cell lines (8701-BC, MDA-MB-231 and SKBR3) upon long-term co-incubation with culture medium of normal microvascular endothelial cells (MVEC) and normal breast epithelial cells (HB2). Lysosomal accumulation of globotriaosylceramide (Gb3) is the element characterizing Fabry disease due to a hereditary deficiency α-galactosidase A (GLA) enzyme. The accumulation of Gb3 causes lysosomal dysfunction that compromises cell signaling pathways.
