Anterograde tracing of retinohypothalamic afferents with Fluoro-Gold

The anterograde neuronal tracing properties of Fluoro-Gold (FG) were characterized in this study by its ability to label the retinohypothalamic tract (RHT) upon pressure injection of the substance into the vitrous body of the eye in the Djungarian hamster, Phodopus sungorus. Tracing was compared to the anterograde neuronal transport of cholera toxin B subunit (CTB), Fast blue (FB), Phaseolous vulgaris leucoagglutinin (PHA-L) and biocytin. Motoneurons of the stapedius muscle in the guinea pig middle ear: Afferent and efferent transmitters

The objective of the present study was to identify efferent and afferent transmitters of motoneurons of the stapedius muscle of the middle ear in order to gain more insight into the neuronal regulation of the muscle. To identify motoneurons, we injected the fluorescent neuronal tracer Fluorogold (FG) into the muscle after preparation of the middle ear in adult guinea pigs. Upon terminal uptake and retrograde neuronal transport, we observed FG in neurons located medial and ventral to the nucleus of the facial nerve ipsilateral to the injection site. Vertebrates sense chemical signals through the olfactory and vomeronasal systems. In squamate reptiles, which possess the largest vomeronasal system of all vertebrates, the accessory olfactory bulb projects to the nucleus sphericus, which in turn projects to a portion of the ventral striatum known as olfactostriatum. Alterations in the spontaneous activity of cells in the guinea pig pineal gland and visual system produced by pineal indoles

The indoles serotonin (SER), melatonin (MEL), 5-methoxytryptophol (5-MTL) and 5-hydroxytryptophol (5-HTL) were administered during daytime microelectrophoretically to 240 cells in the pineal gland of the guniea-pig. The action of SER and 5-HTL was predominantly depressant on the electrical activity, MEL and 5-MTL caused an excitation in most of the units. Although MEL and 5-MTL caused fairly similar reactions on average, they appear to act on different cells. Novel Potent Anticonvulsant Agent Containing a Tetrahydroisoquinoline Skeleton

In our studies on the development of new anticonvulsants, we planned the synthesis of N-substituted 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinolines to explore the structure-activity relationships. All derivatives were evaluated against audiogenic seizures in DBA/2 mice, and the 1-(4'-bromophenyl)-6,7-dimethoxy-2-(piperidin-1-ylacetyl) derivative (26) showed the highest activity with a potency comparable to that of talampanel, the only noncompetitive alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA) antagonist in clinical trials as an anticonvulsant agent. Electrophysiological experiments indicated that 26 acts as noncompetitive AMPA receptor modulator.

Hippocampal theta rhythm is thought to underlie learning and memory, and it is well established that “pacemaker” neurons in medial septum (MS) modulate theta activity. Distribution and targets of the relaxin-3 innervation of the septal area in the rat.

Neural tracing studies have revealed that the rat medial and lateral septum are targeted by ascending projections from the nucleus incertus, a population of tegmental GABA neurons. These neurons express the relaxin-family peptide, relaxin-3, and pharmacological modulation of relaxin-3 receptors in medial septum alters hippocampal theta rhythm and spatial memory.
