Detection of gastric atrophy by circulating pepsinogens: A comparison of three assays.
2017
Background Circulating levels of pepsinogens have been used in high gastric cancer-risk Asian and European populations to triage endoscopic evaluation for more severe pathology. There are different analytic methods with uncertain correlations. We therefore compared diagnostic performance of three commonly used pepsinogen assays to detect histologically confirmed gastric atrophy. Methods We tested plasma samples from adult patients with (n=50) and without (n=755) moderate or severe gastric corpus atrophy, as determined histologically by consensus of three expert pathologists. A single laboratory measured pepsinogens I (PgI) and II (PgII) using commercially available assays: two ELISA assays …

Oral health status of a population with multiple sclerosis.
2010
Objective: To determine the oral treatment needs of a sample of patients diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in the Community of Madrid (Spain). Patients and methods: A cross-sectional epidemiological study was carried out with a sample of 64 patients who were aged 25 to 77 years. They were distributed into homogeneous age groups: 54 years. In order to evaluate the oral health status and treatment requirements, the parameters and guidelines of the WHO were used. Results: The prevalence of caries was 100%, or very close in all three groups. As age increased, the morbidity rate decreased, but the mortality rate increased considerably. On analyzing gingival health, 65% of patients had calculus, …
Pattern of symptoms and symptomatic treatment in adults and the aged population: a retrospective analysis of advanced cancer patients followed at hom…
2016
Context Data regarding symptom burden and symptomatic drugs in palliative population in different classes of age are lacking. Objective The aim of this retrospective study was to assess the symptom burden, and the profile of symptomatic drugs in the last four weeks of life in adults and older cancer patients followed at home. Methods Charts of 412 patients were retrospectively analyzed by using a backward analysis. Patients were divided into three groups: adults (<65 years, A), old (65-74 years, O1), very old (75-84 years, O2), and the oldest (≥85 years, O3). Results At -4W Karnofsky status was significantly lower for older people (p = 0.03). No significant effect of age on the vector of sy…
Prevalence of cataract after collagen copolymer phakic intraocular lens implantation for myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism
2015
Purpose To evaluate the prevalence of cataract after Implantable Collamer Lens phakic intraocular lens (pIOL) implantation with different models at different ages and for different refractive powers. Setting Fernandez-Vega Ophthalmological Institute, Oviedo, Spain. Design Retrospective nonrandomized clinical study. Methods The pIOL (models V4, V4b, or V4c) was implanted in all cases. Results The study included 3420 eyes (1898 patients). The mean patient age at surgery was 31.2 years ± 6.4 (SD) (range 18 to 50 years) and the mean spherical refractive error, −7.27 ± 5.24 diopters (D) (range −26.5 to 12.5 D). Twenty-one eyes (0.61%) of 15 patients had pIOL explantation (all model V4) because c…
Detection of HIV type 1 non-B subtypes in Sicily, Italy.
2004
To evaluate the presence of HIV-1 non-B subtypes in Sicily, we sequenced and genotyped HIV-1 PR and RT regions of the pol gene using plasma from 169 HIV-1-infected adult patients. All samples were obtained from a study of antiretroviral-associated resistance mutations resulting in virological failure during highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). Eight (4.7%) patients had the non-B HIV-1 subtype including some circulating recombinant forms (CRFs). All of these individuals acquired the infection by heterosexual transmission. The detection of HIV-1 non-B strains was significantly associated with younger age of HIV-1 acquisition. Our findings indicate, for the first time, the presence of…
Different prognosis in hospitalized patients with influenza one season after the pandemic H1N1 influenza of 2009-2010 in Spain
2013
Background The present report compares prognosis in hospitalized cases with the H1N1 pandemic virus in two seasons. Methods Two series of hospitalized patients with laboratory-confirmed H1N1 pandemic influenza have been compared: 813 in the season 2009–2010 and 707 in the season 2010–2011. A detailed history of variables preceding hospital admission and during hospitalization was obtained by interview and clinical charts. A combined endpoint of death admission to intensive care was used as outcome due to the low number of deaths. Logistic regression was applied in the analysis for adverse outcome. Results Patients of the second season had different characteristics than in the first one (old…
Prospective evaluation of current asthma control using ACQ and ACT compared with GINA criteria
2011
Background The goal of asthma treatment is to achieve and maintain current best control and reduce future risk of exacerbations and long-term morbidity. Objective To prospectively compare current asthma control as defined by ACQ (asthma control questionnaire) and ACT (asthma control test) criteria with the GINA (Global Initiative for Asthma) classification in treated patients in a real-life setting. Methods In 150 adult patients (48% male, age 46.3 ± 14.4 years., forced expiratory volume in 1 second [FEV 1 ], 2.3 ± 0.9 L or 78.5 ± 21.8% pred.), asthma control was evaluated using the GINA classification as the "true" and ACQ-7, ACQ-5, and ACT as "predictor" criteria. The relationship between…
Cancer patients requiring interruption of long-term warfarin because of surgery or chemotherapy induced thrombocytopenia: The use of fixed sub-therap…
2012
No data are available regarding the management of cancer patients requiring interruption of long-term vitamin-K antagonist (VKA) therapy. For this purpose, we tested the efficacy and safety of fixed doses of low-molecular weight heparin (LMWH) in substitution of VKA because of invasive procedures or chemotherapy-induced thrombocytopenia. In cancer patients on VKA, therapy was discontinued 5 ± 1 days before surgery or chemotherapy. Heparin was given at prophylactic dosage in patients at low risk and at fixed subtherapeutic doses (3,800 or 4,000 UI anti-FXa, b.i.d.) in those at high-risk for thrombosis. LMWH was reinitiated 12 hr after surgery and VKA the day after. In patients receiving chem…
Impairments in top down attentional processes in right parietal patients: Paradoxical functional facilitation in visual search
2014
AbstractIt is well known that the right posterior parietal cortex (PPC) is involved in attentional processes, including binding features. It remains unclear whether PPC is implicated in top-down and/or bottom-up components of attention. We aim to clarify this by comparing performance of seven PPC patients and healthy controls (HC) in a visual search task involving a conflict between top-down and bottom-up processes. This task requires essentially a bottom-up feature search. However, top-down attention triggers feature binding for object recognition, designed to be irrelevant but interfering to the task. This results in top-down interference, prolonging the search reaction time. This interfe…
