Vitamin D kinetics in the acute phase of critical illness: A prospective observational study.

Abstract Purpose The objective of this study was to assess the vitamin D kinetics in critically ill patients by performing periodic serum vitamin D measurements in short time intervals in the initial phase of a critical illness. Materials and methods We performed vitamin D serum measurements: at admission and then in 12-hour time intervals. The minimum number of vitamin D measurements was 4, and the maximum was 8 per patient. Results A total of 363 patients were evaluated for participation, and 20 met the inclusion criteria. Benign hepatic vascular neoplasms and vascular pseudolesions are commonly encountered in magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. Most of these benign lesions demonstrate not only arterial-phase hyperintensity, but also persistent enhancement on venous and delayed imaging, unlike most malignant hepatic masses. These features, along with other MR findings and morphological characteristics, may allow for more confident diagnosis and distinction from hepatic malignancy. The objective of our study was to illustrate the MR imaging findings of hepatic lesions that demonstrate both early arterial and sustained enhancement on hepatic venous and delayed phase.

International audience; The aim of the present study was to investigate the influence of a modification of an intrinsic capacity (plantar flexor strength) on the implementation of in-phase and anti-phase mode of coordination. Analysis of hip and ankle relative phases during fore-aft tracking task was done before and after an electromyostimulation fatigue protocol on the soleus muscles. Results showed participants used exclusively in-phase and anti-phase modes of coordination, with a sudden switch from one to the other with target frequency increase. The functional roles of individual lower limb muscles during human walking may differ depending on walking speed or duration. In this study, 11 volunteers walked on a treadmill for 60 min at speeds corresponding to both optimal and 20% above optimal energetic cost of transport whilst oxygen consumption and medial gastrocnemius (MG) and soleus fascicle lengths were measured. Although energetic cost of transport was ∼12% higher at the faster speed, it remained constant over 60 min at both speeds, suggesting that humans can walk for prolonged periods at a range of speeds without compromising energetic efficiency.
