Chemical speciation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in sediments: partitioning and extraction of humic substances.

2010

The primary objective of this study was to examine the chemical speciation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) found in sediments endowed with different characteristics. To achieve this purpose and because the nature of the sediments influences the distribution of PAHs, we have analyzed four different types of sediments. To study the role of organic matter in the sequestration of PAHs, we fractionated humic substances into humic acids and humin–mineral fractions. After their separation and purification, the humic components were examined for their sorptive reactivity by extracting them with organic solvents; these extracts were subsequently subjected to GC/MS analysis. Our results sh…

Calculation of vapor pressures not requiring the derivatives of the energy of mixing

1997

A method is presented for the calculation of vapor pressures exclusively on the basis of the energy of mixing, the knowledge of chemical potentials is not required. The only condition used for the calculation is the minimum of the energy of mixing of the overall system in equilibrium. The gas phase is treated as an ideal gas, for the liquid phase no specific thermodynamic description is assumed. The method is demonstrated for a mixture of two solvents and one polymer. The system water/poly(ethylene oxide), the thermodynamics of which are described by an equation that can only be solved numerically thus impeding the calculation of chemical potentials, serves as an example. Interaction parame…

Preferential evaporation of precipitants from polymer solutions in mixed solvents

2000

Partial vapor pressures were measured for the volatiles of solutions of polysulfone or polyethersulfone in mixtures of N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF, solvent) and water or acetone (precipitants) by means of headspace gas chromatography. The results demonstrate that the enrichment of water in the gas phase increases exponentially with rising polymer concentration, in contrast to that of acetone which remains constant. The reinforced expulsion of water resulting from the presence of polymers is theoretically conceivable and should be useful in the field of separation techniques.

Electrochemical monitoring of ROS generation by anticancer agents: the case of chartreusin

2017

Solution phase and solid-sate electrochemical techniques centered in the voltammetry of microparticles approach are applied for testing the cytotoxic activity of anticancer drugs. The possibility of electrochemical generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is exploited for evaluating their contribution to cellular damage. The described methodology is applied to the case of chartreusin (Ch) whose electrochemistry in non-aqueous solutions and in the solid state in contact with aqueous electrolytes is described in the absence (experimental data were confirmed by theoretical calculations) and in the presence of double-stranded DNA (dsDNA). In parallel, scanning electrochemical microscopy (SEC…

O-Alkylation of a lignite humic acid by phase-transfer catalysis

2006

A mild phase-transfer catalytic reaction has been conducted to O-alkylate the acidic functions of a lignite humic acid (HA), using tetrabutylammonium hydroxide as the phase-transfer catalyst. The HA acidic functional groups were made to react, in tetrahydrofuran, by nucleophilic substitution with several alkyl halides-methyl iodide, and ethyl, propyl, and butyl, and benzyl bromide. The occurrence of the O-alkylation reaction was assessed by elemental analysis and 1H NMR, CPMAS 13C NMR, and FTIR spectroscopy. Bonding of alkyl groups increased the carbon and hydrogen content and the H/C ratios of all the humic reaction products. Increased nitrogen in the reaction products suggested incomplete…

Study of silica-structured materials as sorbents for organophosphorus pesticides determination in environmental water samples

2018

Abstract A novel sorbent based on a UVM-7 mesoporous silica doped with Ti has been synthesized and used for solid-phase extraction of several organophosphorus pesticides in environmental water samples followed by gas chromatography coupled to a nitrogen-phosphorus selective detector. Thus, mesoporous silica materials doped with Ti and Fe as well as immobilized cyclodextrin silica-based supports were prepared and morphologically characterized by several techniques such as transmission electronic microscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption and X-ray diffraction. These sorbents were comparatively evaluated, and Ti25-UVM-7 material was selected as the best solid phase. After optimization of extr…

Determination of soyasaponins I and βg in raw and cooked legumes by solid phase extraction (SPE) coupled to liquid chromatography (LC)-mass spectrome…

2013

Legumes contain a rich variety of phytochemicals as soyasaponins, triterpenoidal glycosides that possess multiple health-promoting properties, such as lowering of cholesterol. In this work, the quantification of soyasaponins I and βg in 60 raw and cooked legumes by using a solid phase extraction (SPE) coupled to a liquid chromatography (LC)-mass spectrometry (MS) method was carried out. Results showed that lentils are a good source of soyasaponins, with a content of soyasaponin I that ranged from 636 to 735 mg kg(-1) and of soyasaponin βg from 672 to 1807 mg kg(-1). The cooking process produced a small loss of soyasaponins in water, that is, 4.8-8.7%, and partially converted soyasaponin βg …

A newin vitroapproach for the simultaneous determination of phase I and phase II enzymatic activities of human hepatocyte preparations

2007

Primary hepatocytes are still the best qualified in vitro system to anticipate drug metabolism in man. Recent advances in hepatocytes cryopreservation have notably increased their use not only for drug metabolism studies, but also for other applications such as cell transplantation. Evaluation of the drug-metabolizing competence of each hepatocytes preparation is needed. To date, the metabolic characterization of hepatocytes preparations relies on the assessment of phase I activities and the role of phase II enzymes receives little attention. A novel approach for the rapid assessment of the metabolic functionality of hepatocytes has been developed. A five-probe cocktail was used to simultan…
